after going to the last track event, my car seems to make a whinning noise whenever i press the gas. the sound sounds like a supercharger, literally. it happens whenever i accelerate in gear, OR out of gear. if i'm just parked and i rev it up i still hear the sound. it is VERY noticable and very consistent and smooth.
no change in performance really, just the added sound.
i am assuming its engine related since even when im standing still i am able to hear it.
also, the whinning is coming from underneath the car it seems.
i thought it was an exhaust leak but there is no loss in power and does NOT bog.
i have not checked the engine bay tho, i only stuck my head out the door to hear it.
my vavle springs are loose as well...maybe something in the engine is going and is resonating thru the exhaust system? hrmmmm
anyone have any ideas?

Whinning usually means your alternator is going bad. it makes sense that when you accelerate the whinning will get louder since the alternator pulley is spinning faster.

i thought it usually meant a bad ground.
i thought it meant someone snuck a supercharger under your hood like a ninja.

I always thought it meant some issues having to do with stereo frequency and power output between the alternator and the stereo system itself. .. .I've never heard an alternator go out like that personally. .. .but have typically heard it in cars with stereos installed 2nd hand or DIY to the manual.

Alternator whine. Sounds like its on its way out and/or over charging.

check the fan clutch
with the engine off try to spin the fan with your hand. if you have a ton of resistance then its done.

thanks for the input guys! i have had some responses on other boards that it might be the following as well
1) bad ground
2) alternator
i took out my clutch fan and i am running on altima fans atm.
and yes, the whine does get louder when i accerlate in 1st and 2nd gear.
ill check the engine bay to see if it really is the alternator and keep you guys posted!
ps: i wish someone snuck a supercharger in my hood!

if its the alternator/voltage regulator... when you rev, your lights and gauges should get slightly brighter.. headlights will light up brighter when you gas the sucker.

does the noise go away when the clutch is disengaged?

i took a peak in the engine bay and its coming from there.
its not a squeaking sound so i don't think its the belts...ill check the tension tho
i think it may be the alternator....would be overcharged or undercharged if it makes this whine?

well i was gonna say for sure the fan clutch since the same happened to me but you say you are running altima fans; is that electric fans?
can't think of anything other than fan clutch since the alternator would usually feel like a loss of power and your lights act like they were christmas ones blinking and shit.
are you sure you haven't had a supercharger all along?... lol you never know.

My car does the same thing. It is the bearing from the transmission. Not the throwout, the other one around there. I would know the name of it but I'z a lil drunk right now. But anyways, my car has a loud wyning sound when the clutch isnt pressed in and I push the gas, whether I am moving or not. If I push the clutch in, the sound goes away. But mine sounds supercharged.....till the RFL hits. Someone help me out with the name of that bearing.

input shaft bearing?

it seems to be the transmission.
i rev it with the clutch in and the sound is gone.
i rev it and the lights DO NOT get brighter...so not the alternator.
how long does this bearing have before it goes? and what happens when it does?
the sound died down a bit but its still there tho....my friend said it sounds like a supercharger as well.

same here, mine whines loud as hell, been like that for a while, its the bearing, had it replaced last year and a a few months ago it started again. just means it's worn, not gone or going out, mine has been like that for a few months and no big deal, so you still have time before you really need to change it. I think as it gets worse it'll start feeling like its sliping right before it engages, thats what mine felt like.
but just to be sure check you tranny fluid level, when I first got my car I forgot to check the tranny fluid level it had no fluid and whined really loud, before i found out what it was, the tranny tore itself to pieces. lol.. learned the hard way!

Change your trans fluid. Replace it with Redline MT-90, it should help a lot.

^^^ Trans fluid won't help, it's the pilot bearing or throwout bearing. Replace them whenever you replace your clutch next, and the sound will go away.
First question should have been "does it make the sound with the clutch in also", because worn pilot/throwout bearings are much more common than bad alternators.
BTW, that's a nice sig pic breakindrifts ~ I've got a few of your car too :)

Well if his tranny is dry out of fluids it will DEFINATELY make sounds similar to that of a supercharger. My output shaft seal leaked all my fluid out, and made that noise. filled it up and it was gone.

maybe someone snuck in a dc air compressor. there was a kid at my highschool with a fc that put one in his cone filter, lol, said it was his supercharger running at one psi. he's a very silly person

if your car sounds like a can opener...... then its a t/b bearing. It's a slight whining or as you've narrowed down, input shaft.

Yup, that's true ~ add that to the list of things that anyone with this problem should check.
