i just got my head back from the machine shop. the machinist took out the lifters and squeezed the oil out of them, telling me the engine would not start otherwise, because when the rocker arms are removed the lifters suck in oil.
now, im just reading through my FSM, and it states that any more than 1mm of play in the lifters will cause them to make noise, and to plunge them under oil to fill them. i tend to belive the fsm, but supposedly this guy knows his shit... so who's right? i have a head full of soft lifters and i dont want them to be ticking like an old subaru... any insight on this will be greatly appreciated!

fill them with oil and get rid of all the air. I had the same problem and it fixed it right away. Just take them out and pump 'em in oil.

I've done this twice since I flipped my motor over during the rebuild. Fill a plastic cup up with motor oil, about 1/2" just higher then the lifter is tall. stand the lifter in the cup with the "nipple" part facing up.

take a 1/16" in probe of some sort and stick it down into the lifter, and pump around until you get the sweet spot where a lot will come out.

They are done when no air comes out and they move smoothly up and down. I stored all of them in a spare cup of motor oil so as to make sure they're perfect.

When you put them back in, make sure they dont turn over!
