Older toyota paseo car(1987 or 88 i believe). Automatic, small 4cyl, fuel injection. The car is having two problems which i believe to be related.

1. When in drive, at a stop the car revs up to 1500 rpms, drops down to 700 rpms, and repeats untill put in neutral or the accelrator is pressed.

2. The car hesitates badly on acceleration before 3 or 4k. rpms. Once it hits 3 or 4k. rpms, power kicks in and the car takes off somewhat quickly.

Suggestions please...

change the fuel filter

sounds like your fuel pump. Mine did the same thing (240 that is). It would jerk and idle bad a had zero power until about 4k.

How would either of the solutions above be related to the reving up and down at a stop, while in drive?

Not saying you're wrong, just wondering how they could possibly be related.

sounds like the converter in the trans is going bad.

At first I wanted to say the brake switch, for the stall save in the ecu, but bad accleration until pressure is built in the trans sounds like trans or bad fluid. What is the fluid like?

Idle control valve perhaps as well, I forget if the Toyotas use a valve or a stepping motor.

That sounds like the most reasonable explanation yet. And i do believe it is an IAC VALVE... Will look into that. Thanks.

Johngriff- although that makes some sence, if the motor ran perfectly, wether it had a good trans. or bad trans.(or any for that matter) it would still idle at a constant speed. Right?

If the fuel pressure is irregular from the pump not working correctly the idle could be effected.

this happened to my 240 when it was automatic. ever since i did the manual swap, it stopped doing that. i knew that it had to be a transmission problem, like the torque converter or something and its probably the same for urs

IAC valve is shot. Idle air valve is on the throttle body, take it out clean with carb solvent and re install ever 40k on a toyota

if it's not the iac, test the TPS

ive owned three of these crap boxes and they all have had issues with this... i will admit the tps will cause simular concerns but assuming that is in order the next two things to check are the iac and the maf

check for a block of C4 under the hood and if you find it give it a small electrical charge :D
