I just got the entire rear setup of a 300zx for my brake conversion. now since the z32 uprights needs a fork type strut, do i have to get z32 struts for the rear and s14 struts for the front? do they even fit? this article was very unclear

The only other modification needed to mount up the Z32 upright is modifying the rear suspension. http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/january03/240sx/images/s136_tn.jpg (http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/january03/240sx/images/s136.jpg) http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/january03/240sx/images/s1312_tn.jpg (http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/january03/240sx/images/s1312.jpg)The 300ZX uses a fork-type rear shock, while the 240SX uses a bolt-type rear shock mount. Since we had our Zeal suspension, we contacted Endless USA and they graciously provided us with the Z32 lower shell casing from their Zeal suspension for this project. For those of you that are not going with a coilover setup, it is possible to buy Z32 rear shocks and modify them to fit the S13. Here are pictures of the different rear lower shell casings.

I dont see how I could possible change the lower half of a strut. so Im not sure what kind of custom thing ZEAL provided them with. has anyone actually done this?

You cannot use Z32 struts/shocks on an S14, period. On an S13, the rear shock is a direct replacement, but nothing in the front works. You would need an ECR33 rear shock, but that's only if you're using the Z32 rear upright. Or with coilovers, you buy the correct fork style lower mounts.

And search harder next time, this shit is very remedial and well documented already.

before I posted I searched for, "struts" "shocks" and "z32 rear brake conversion" and dint find anything pertaining to my question. maybe I am using the wrong keywords.

Possibly. I know for certain I've documented it before for others.

You didn't specify but I assume you're planning on using the Z32 uprights, hence the question. If not, ignore all the above and just use what's on the car already.

Yes I have the z32 uprights. what coil overs will give me the option to change the lower half other than the Zeal in that article?. or a better question, is the unsprung weight savings even worth all this on a street car that isnt tracked?

when I got my z32 parking brake drum system, it came with the uprights. so I figured why not use them, after all they shave about 8lbs of unsprung weight of each side. but does any of this even matter on a street application?

don't bother, it's a pain in the ass. but if you do, you can specify the z32 mount at no extra cost when you buy KTS coilovers.

im just gonna run stock cast iron s14's ones, i really dont feel like spending 1k on new coil overs, or cutting and welding forks. I probably wouldnt notice the difference anyway since I dont track the car.

I know this is old but its proven a lil hard to search for such specifics, anyways what it appears is that you are saying (only talking about rears here) that Z32 rear shocks will work on a S13 using Z32 aluminum uprights? So imma assume if this is correct (tell me if mis-read you) that the s13 and z32 rear shocks are teh same lenght and have the same upper mount bolt pattern, pretty much everything being the same except fork the lower mount, thanks.

Nevermind I found the answer in another one of yoru threads R240NA (FS thread)

Bingo. Z32 and S13 shocks are identical save for the lower mount design. S13 uses the ball type, Z32 uses a fork type. The S13 springs and all hardware can be swapped right over to the Z32 shock.
