alright dave (240sxaddict) isnt on this board but i wanted to know what you guys thought about his cage he just sponsored for kiely mackey's car. we on the east coast but he did a demo for charity this weekend and well, he needed a cage. dave went down for a couple days and hooked them up. he didnt weld it up but the rest is him. this was his first cage but kiely loves it. neither him or his passengers had problems hitting there head or anything. he let matt martin from ma motorsport drive it and was really impressed. as soon as he gets his business license he will be letting bare 6 points for 500 which is a killer deal. i'll let the pictures say the rest.

Kiely's girl. Don't mess with her. She's cute, that is all. Am impressed you could tell it was an asian girl though.
The cage was welded on the shittiest of shit welders. We would have been better off using fucking JB Weld. The welds aren't pretty but they're good penetration. Who cares how pretty it is, it's legal and gets him into tandem. I didn't weld it, I hung out and watched the rollers not want to feed the wire and fuck up constantly. Whole car was basically built over the course of 4 nights to be ready about 5 hours before the promo event.
Uhhh.....what else was i supposed to cover? Stock rb20, stock boost, aussie cheat pipe (dump tube) and running open downpipe. Probably the most unhealthy rb20 he has ever had. After swapping it in we checked compression and two cylinders are already at 120.....fucking lovely.
Kiely may/may not jump in here. He uses my screen name as it is.
Blehhhh, think that answers all. I'm done. Gbye.

he can bend the pipes now. i will end up welding ours in but i dont have a welder yet. so you weld them. i'll have to find his email, you cant talk to him about it. im sure he can work something out. once things progress we're getting into exhausts, and suspension pieces, and stainless manifolds.

just so you know you're making me a knockoff buddy club spec 2... k? cool. you can use my car to fab it up, which equals free exhaust for me :)
p.s. why does your age say 26...
How's the kit feel before and after? Tighten the chassis up a lot? Paint that cage before it rusts!

from what dave said, kiely was really happy with it and noticed a huge difference. these pipes are beefy as hell.

Nice using a main hoop design, the project car I bought has the cage setup like that, but the way it was done the a pillar bars are like 6" from the a pillar itself, so I'll probably be re-doing it. I didn't think you could get that design nicely into a 240, but yours looks rad, well done.
You're talking about a HALO design
Jedd from Piper was telling me he USED to do the cages like that but likes the down bar style better

Car is a million times stiffer, holy shit. Driving it is a night and day difference. Cage is getting painted hot pink after we get back from Hyper-fest.
Cage was also designed for a car with a full interior and sunroof, but we ripped out the interior and riveted on a block off plate. Just to give you an idea of why the cage isn't THAT close to the body but how close it would be with full interior.

yeah daves pretty genius. i i was surprised how well this cage turned out. its his first one. just wait until he gets it down. he's good. once i get a welder, dave says i get mine. and then people with out a welder can get them installed as well. i know a lot of people want cages but have no way of putting them in without paying a shop big bucks to weld it in. this way we can do it all at once and still keeping the price down. once i graduate high school next year i will be a certified welder/pipefitter. i already passed the test i just have to wait.

This is dave, the cage builder. we're finishing the cage this week with door bars and the rest of the rear x-brace, then it'll be painted. and I used the halo design because it was eaiest to make, and the hardest to mess up. it's easy to fit though, sit right between the rearveiw and the moonroof control box when the interior is in. and the forward bars were welded in further forward than designed so the tops came inwards more than I expected, if put more rearward they would have followed the pillars very nicely, not that its bad where it sits right now. Oh well, i can change the design for the following cages. Just wait for the cage going into my brother vert... you'll shit your pants.

This is Kiely, the owner of the S14 in question.
The cage looks worse in pics (fitment wise) than it really is. The thing fits REALLY tight in all the veiwable places (just like he said it would) now that I have all the rear panels back in the interior. The lower parts of the hoops were the bad spots, and the lil extra gap at the top would be completely filled if I were to look up a non moonroof headliner, but I'm lazy and busy at the same time, so meh.
I am not a fan of Halo designs just because of trying to squeeze my ass into them, but this thing is almost COMPLETELY unintrusive so far. I think thatrwith a little fore thought before we start on them, that even with X door bars, it will still be relly easy to enter and exit the vehicle without smacking yer head on anything.
As for the welding..... To say the welder was jacked would be a MASSIVE understatement. The guy who did the welding welds for a living. I have seen him do amazing things... Just making a well penetrated blob with that thing is a challenge... I give him his credit, but will alaways regret having to complete the cage with the shit welder and will be bothered by the shitty looking welds from here on out. CRAAAAAAAP. <---thinkin' about it again.
What was the "BFE" comment suppose to mean? It was built in Baltimore MD by mostly peolpe from Baltimore. I'm southern, but certainly no BFE here...
As for the asian chick... Thats my girl. She's Korean. Beatiful,....and only calls and asks "when will it be done???" every now and then. She even puts the "skanky" pillowcase on my pillow for me when she knows I will coming in at 6am and will be too tired to take a shower... Occasional shop visits with foods are one of the bonuses aswell, the health food however is NOT.:ugh:
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH CAGE DAVE!

Why, for most sanctioning bodies and classes there are no weight saving to be had by using chromoly. And with the raw materials being about twice the cost, plus the need to TIG them. And after that it should be heat treated because chromoly becomes a lot more brittle than mild steel after welding. It's just not really worth it, especially for such throwaway cars that everyone has.
Stick welding? Where you thinking about stick welding a cage or have you tried to? That just sounds like a horrible idea.

then get off your ass and get a welder casey.... haha. if you had stayed KA you'd have it! HAHAHAHA
and chromoly... i'm thinking about saving that until after the suspension and kevlar programs are underway, then chromoly for one-off chassis designs...

Kiely passed NASA inspection today at Hyperfest '07 at summit point W.V. with flying colors. heres pictures of the finished door bars. keep in mind this is a daily driver also, safety and comfort had to be mixed together for the design. the end result? legal door bars that aren't in the way.

your correct, using rods on a fucking cage is stupid its time wasteful. use a MIG

yeah kiely passed no problem. the whole stick welding think guys..where i go to school, the diesel program made a derby car..they needed a welder because they are dumb fucks. so they sent me to weld this kind of tube frame, kind of a janky design but it served the purpose. all they had was an old idealarc monolith of a welder. i said fuck it, i'll stick weld it. i grabbed a 50lb box of 3/32 7018 which is a low hydrogen electrode(aka high strength) to give it a shot. the welds turned out perfect. its what im good at. i have only about 30 hours of tig welding, mostly stainless pipe. so yeah with smaw, you have a lot of fumes, slag, mess, but you get welds looking 10x better than any mig that ive done. cant stand mig. good for one thing. mass production. its quick, easy, and doesnt take much skill whatsoever. smaw and gtaw are an art. i personally will never mig weld a cage, as you guys saw with kiely's cage, they were using a shitty esab welder. you have to worry about your wire feed(their problem) on top of the machine itself. im sorry but when i weld cages its not going to be a quicky, janky, weld job. that means no mig for me. stick was just the first choice because it was something i did for 3 hours straight 5 days a week and they are cheap machines. but i want something more precise that will show my skill as a welder.
chromoly cages...they are just baller. wasnt really being serious. ive welded chromoly one time and it was money.

how is this? stupid? thats a pretty ignorant statement. smaw is the grand daddy of all welding processes and is one that takes a lifetime to perfect. stupid no. impractical and dangerous inside a car, yes. and sure as hell not time wasteful. i dont even trust most mig welds. some look like they penetrate but have the tensile strength of a toothpick. i would only use mig if i were welding 10 a day.
420sx
06-24-2007, 09:20 PM
i know its old, its the fuckin original. its inpractical plus you have to clean the weld blah, flux, shit everywhere. mig so much cleaner and efficient. tig even better but you would have to be a baller to have one.
and if you cant get a good penetration with a mig, then you are an idiot. just dont rush and take your time
ch1873857
06-24-2007, 09:43 PM
penetration with mig comment made based on the machine. you get what you pay for. and a 110 mig on these cages would just shit out no matter what. ive never seen a good penetrating 110. sometimes no matter how slow you go it just wont penetrate because of the lack of heat. and we basically agreed with eachother on stick. i chose tig along time ago. does that mean im baller? lol. first time tigging i brought my shitty ssac downpipe to school that didnt fit. i had to cut the flanges and reweld them and i had an 8" piece of flex pipe too. took me 3 hours and the teach was quite impressed. and i dont really need something efficient. these are highly precise custom (for now) cages. besides with the body sheet metal i want something i can easily control the amount of heat im using constantly as to not burn through. i cant wait.
