I ordered a redtop Sr20det and got it two days ago. The compressor and inlet pipes had alot of oil in them. When i took the turbo off, the oil literally poured out- it was atleast a cup. There were many other problems to begin with, but the turbo is the only prob. I'm concerned with immediately.

The turbo

A) has zero shaft play
B) spins freely just as well as a new turbo.
C) fins are in great shape

I know A,B,C are independent of whether the turbo blows oil, but I was curiuos if anyone has ever experienced this before. I have not swapped the motor yet, but I do plan on trying to run the turbo. What I think may had happened is the motor sat on its side and turbo filled up with oil from the drain line.... But can it do that and to that magnitude?? - The motor had about 5quarts of oil when I received it.

Any comments? or suggestions to check if the oil ring is alright?

Also, will permenanty removing factory coolant lines to turbo decrease longevity of the turbo itself?

if the engine was laying on its side (turboside) then the oil being inside there wouldnt surpirse me. was it the exhaust side? The exhasut side oil seal is just a small piston ring to seal it. I forgot what the intake used.
Cuz i had a few turbos laying around and put oil in in the centersection to kep from rusting and alot of it came out of the exhaust side from sitting for so long.

From my days of rebuilding dsm turbos, i believe the compressor side has a ring too. The oil was not in the exhaust side though it had leaked over to the exhaust side eventually.

i have the same issue...i got my sr20 1 week ago...found oil in the turbo and intake manifold...i was told it was my oil catch can was full...it made sense because there was no oil in the intake ports or turbo manifold ports so hopefully everything goes alright when it goes in

Yeah.. I wonder if this is a common occurance from engines sitting on their sides?

if you have this issue and youve been running the car with the oil catch can hooked up to vaccum, empty the catch can and re-consider the condition of you bottm end.

this can be caused by excessive blow-by. In stock configuration there is a tube going from the valve cover T- that goes to the oil catch- that traces into the intake manifold to provide suction to the crank case. Its not nessicarily bad if there a little bit of oil in there, but a lot means problems down the road.

Its pretty rare in all honesty and rare that i have seen, oil seal failing and oil leaking into the fron tof the turbo. Typically its the carbon exaust seals around the turbine housing taht leak oil and then burn it as smoke

hmm... that'd be some crazy blowby.. I need to do a comp + leakdown test I'm guessing. Would it matter that the turbo was covered in oil (the outside)?

Dammit, now you've got me worried..

get a pic up of it.

It might be average blow by.

btw this post is 2012 representing the end of the mayan calenders and the end of life as we know it.

lol. I already cleaned out turbo. It was prety significant amount of oil. I think i'm going to hook the tranny and starter up and jump the starter to check the comp. before i put it in. Though compression rings and oil rings are different, decent compression will atleast show an okay sign.... I think the motor was in a car that flipped or something. Could that change the situation? the motormounts were all kind of waked up. The tranny mount was too. the oil pan has a big gash in it and there are other signs too.

He just got the engine.

Its not installed.

Engines are stacked ontop of each other in shipping, this is the way cool kids pack containers:

Im sure they just threw your motor(s) ontop of each other, and they tipped and spilt oil all over your engine. The retailer got your engine and sprayed it down and cleaned it, but the oil remained.

Comp/Leak Down test, I am sure everything is fine, and your engine just got packed horridly..

Well, doing the wiring for the s13 sr into the s14... a lot more work than anticipated (doing for the first time). Anyone available to talk to over the phone if i have some wiring q's?
