My dad (jau663) bought a s13 the other day. So I went down to raleigh NC to pick it up. long story short, the car was in terrible shape. not worth the $300 he bought it for on ebay. i told the guy it wasnt worth my time or money to take it home. so he replys " how much will you give me for it?" i ended up getting the thing for $100. (still barely worth it)
But anyways, Dad and i are now the proud owners of a 93 fastback se. on to the pics!!
we pretty much gutted it today, and got a couple of over things done :D

Heh, if you are missing those cam caps, you are pretty much F'd and should just aquire a completely different engine, not necessarily an SR, just one that has all the parts to it. Those cam caps are per engine specific.

hahaha
get an extra set of camp caps- take the head to a machine shop with all the cam caps ( a machine shop with racing experience and a lot work with aluminum head).
They can usually check the clearences with the cam torqued down and if need be polish or even line bore the fuckers.
Dont throw the engine out just yet.

Everything is line bored as blanks. The only way to rebore would be to fill (weld) onto the head, get blank caps, and re bore the head. That is easily over $500 on an engine you could find for $300. Lets not over complicate things here.
I say you contact the guy with teh viper motor and give him a couple hundred for it, what a tool

looks fucking terrible. why would you smash out the windows. this is why there is no good 240s left because nobody fixes them up, they just do shit like this. i mean cut off the fucking hatch? this car was better off with the previous owner. i hate you, seriously
if you put a motor in that car and a back window, 30 dollar junkyard tails or wetsand the stock ones, it wouldntve been a total piece of shit. but now it sure is. way to go
interior looked nice too. way to go on that awesome 'gutting' job. kill yourself for real

here are some tips. cage and brace the car. everything b/w the shock towers. if you make a rear window use lexan or the section from an old toyota pick up. get some form of rhino liner spray covering for the exposed bed since that area needs to be free and last from rust. BTW those side windows provided anywhere from 20-40% of the rear rigidity.
C. Senor
06-14-2007, 02:38 PM
well props to your dad for doing something, even if it is smashing the windows...lol. but yeah hopefully you guys finish the whole thing...and that car def looked like it was worth 300.

dude, get a life.
there was no straight panel on this car! front end is totally screwed. roof has a dent, both quarter panels are screwed, doors are still alright. and i tried to get the quarter glass out on the drivers side as hard as i could. tried and tried to cut it out, but it just broke. so i just smashed the passengers side. as far as saving any of the parts i have 3 other parts cars out back. i'm not worried about haveing a good interior. more pics will be up within the hour

YOUR telling me not to overcomplicate?
If the clearences are ok it's fine, im saying CHECK your shit, before you throw a motor in the trash.
And plus he doesnt need a whole entire engine he needs just the head if this really is the case.
wastfuckinful
Ive sold a couple sr' head to people with no caps, they took their shit into the machine shop, cleaned it up checked the clearences and are racing on them now...dont bullshit me

why didnt you guys remove the sound deadener before you started welding in the back "wall".

Who gives a fuck if its a hood. A piece of metal to fit there, thick enough could've been like $75 bucks. Thats money better spent elsewhere. It's not a show car.

The car looks in pretty good shape, as for the hood, well man it's metal and if you have it there why not. It's doesn't look like it will be a show car so what does it matter. Can't say I would have done the truck route but it's not turning out bad at all.

Curious to see how this build goes, I had a hatch a year ago that was pretty beat up and the plan was to go truck but then I realized I could sell it and put that money into my s14. $1000 > silcamino. Now that the s14 is closer to done though if I come across a super cheap hatch I would still like to do it. But take the time and do it a little cleaner.

i love the idea, i tried lookin for one already done when i went out to by my s14.... sad to say i couldn't find one. kinda kool to see someone making a build thread out of one. he only thing i see wrong with this build is tryin to do it on what looks like a small budget. good luck man lookin decent so far. what kind of cage are you going to put in it?
sideview_180sx
06-15-2007, 02:30 PM
good luck with making it track worthy. especially to get on VIR. see if you can get a tech to inspect the car before you register and so forth so you will know if you have to add more this and that or if you pass and ready to jam.

BTW the team orange truck died in vegas. backed into a wall, sent natao suenaga to the hospital. the team orange truck was not really built with safety in mind, just basic japanese cusco style cage and what not. I figure make safety your main aspect. the engine deal with it that after you have the chassis itself completed.

420sx
06-16-2007, 02:04 PM
man you guys are in a world of work to make this look nice.
hood idea was pretty bad. should have welded a piece of 16 or 14 gauge with a cut out for the window and holes for the cage. just use rubber grommets for the cage passing through the wall.
the hood idea is grotesque. track car or not make it look nice. and your bed needs alot of work.

exactly what happens here...
today i told my dad to go buy a vette er something because he was driving me and my moms car somewhere and was doing 80 down a side street. i was like wtf...

Nice progress ed, everything is coming together. I know nobody agrees with it, but I like the hood myself. And I'd keep the skeleton part visible. Just paint to match inside or outside or however you wanna do it. I mean from a safety stand point I couldn't tell ya if it's a good idea or bad idea, but I can say it's unique. You could've taken a big sheet and welded it in, but I think it's cooler to say, "Yeah that's a hood" lol.
What size wheels you looking for, you know I stay on ebay. Just email a list of anything you need cause I stayed glued on there and the classifieds on here and nico.
Hey for the 5 lug...I got some z32 hubs that adrian and me thought would work, but chris later told me wouldn't. Think you can only use rears. Not sure if they're tt or n/a, but if you interested atleast in the rears let me know. Maybe I can get some money back since not going 5 lug lol. There still sitting in the same box they arrived in

And besides who cares if it looks good. You can do that later. Don't waste your time and money on paint and good looks now if it stops you from completing the build process. Just get it going first. Piss people off with the looks for a while and then make it look good. LOL

Whatever you say pal. I'm not a big fan of spending ridiculous amounts of money to make something look better. If it involves functionality, I'm there.

Hey if you alll know anybody who has a decent front aero bumper for cheap/not an arm&leg, let my boy Ed know. Not trying to ask for him, but Ithink he's still looking for one. I tried looking myself but all I've seen are brand new bumpers that come along with that "brandnew" price tag lol. Far as I know he's keeping the flip up's so he needs a bumper for those lights.
I'll still keep looking ed.

that setup doesn't look very safe.. i don't know much about cages, but if i had to fabricate my own.. i would've placed the "roll bar" outside of the vehicle with "side pillars (?)" bars along the inside? can anyone verify that? just curious.. so if/when i ever do decide to cage up my car!

weird buildups like this make me sick unless they're planned and executed right.
there are a lot of things that i dont like the looks of, at the moment. if it changes, then maybe all this work has potential. otherwise, i think you could have put your time and money into a better goal.
for the tool that said function comes before form, think again. its a balance of the two, that makes perfection. if you cant manage to balance function and form, then you fail.

I give you mad props for jewing everyone into giving you shit for below cost and doing this bastard project and actually making headway on it and getting it done.
can't wait to see it more finished... I'd defintely add some straight uprights to the roll bar (going on the sides from main hoop back to the strut towers) but other than that it looks pretty schweeet.

I say do it right and rattlecan it.
Screw every single person who thinks that a paint job proves that you care about the car. The way its kept mechanically and the way it's driven proves that you care about the car and understand its purpose in life. If you're heavily sponsored or race in a NASA or SCCA series it's one thing but for a track rat then who cares, seriously? I love it when a car looks like crap but just plain works.
Make this car work, and props to you and your dad for the build.
"If it don't sparkle, it ain't shit" should be the new slogan of the 240SX boyz and that's exactly why we don't get any respect.

wow. most 240 owners dont get any respect in the "scene" because they are too cheap to paint their damn cars. every meet or event i goto 70% of the nissans there are rattle canned and look like total shit, but oh man they are tearing it up... nah man that shit does not look cool. it just like what it is, a car with an owner thats to cheap to paint it. hell roller paint jobs are 40 times better than rattle can. or if your to lazy for that vinyl wrap it. if you can afford to rock a kit on 17/18's and drift you can afford a paint job, you just choose not to.
look at it however you want but please dont justify rattle can jobs as "doing it right".

Figured i'd give my 2 cents cause i think your project has potential, but it looks like its taken a turn in the wrong direction lately (imo)
i'd redo the rear panel and cage... i dont think it makes much sense to have the main hoop inside the car taking up space... put it on the ouside of the rear bulkhead and gusset it to the body.
like this:http://www.volksbloggin.com/wp-content/images/touareg/vwtouaregpickup.jpg
polished like that would look so sweet.
get rid of that cross brace get a window in there! i'd get something like this: http://www.eurekaboy.com/f250/powerslider2.jpg
its got a sweet electric sliding function (http://www.eurekaboy.com/f250/powerslider2.avi)

Glad to see someone was bold enough to take on such a task, but remember anything worth having takes time so keep up the good work. I should've clarified that by "do it right" I meant performance-wise, not looks wise.
I get most of my "hey man, your car kicks ass because it's all performance and you can tell" or "I really like your car" from guys driving cars with almost perfect paint.
I am too cheap to paint my car, and proud of it. Hell, I haven't put any paint on it since 2005 and it was Krylon primer white on the roof. I won't even pony up the cash for a few cans of paint to make it all one color because that's $20 I could use to go out for a drive or buy a can of RBF600 and a double-double or a couple tubes of Copaslip or some oil or some rivets or latches, not to mention I could use the time to do something else like make the car lighter or check torques on suspension bits.
I'm not about to drop $2.5k plus on a good paint job when that's a quarter of the price of an imported R32 track toy, or a set of DA coilovers or a roll cage. Priorities.

You are blessed to have parents that enjoy the things you love to do. Mine enjoy it but are unable to help for medical reasons. That's what I have friends for though.
I can't wait to see this build finished and rolling down the street.
As far as the paint goes, the ones that don't like it can take a hike. Flat paint has been the way of true performance people since probably the 40's. No rat rods were ever shiny but they all hauled serious ass. I agree, why would I spend $1000 on a paint job when I still have performance issues that I can fix. I do all of my own paint though. Black sealer with a clear is as good as it gets until after the KA-T is finished on my car. I may go with a super clean ass black finish in the end.
Shiny paint seems to grab the po-po's attention anyways. :fawkd:
