this seems to be more of a beginner-oriented day as where all-star bash should be more for the intermediate to advanced driver, so whats the big deal?

it's great that we have so many events here in socal, let's just have fun at the events that you're cut out for :)

I'm gonna be outta town for both, but hope both orgs have a great event!

(not trying to bash, but i found the sunday event funny...)

beginner competition?
i don't know what that is? who can do j-turns the best, or connecting figure 8's? haha, i just thought beginner competition is an oxymoron, contradicting words...

wouldn't the organization want beginners to learn first before competing

but on the other hand, i'd like someone to videotape if they do beginner tandem, that'll be fun to watch, lol

Ok ok, you're right Colin.

But still, if Dousan says to goto All Star Bash, goto All Star Bash. Jack.

Think you're way off, Tandems are only legal in CA if the two cars have full cages, with sidebars.

Beginner novice competition is a GREAT idea. Get people used to the pressure of competition without the pressure of being against professionals.

They have the chance to practice the day before.

I'm sure people wont sign up for a competition as their first event. These are people who probably have had a drift day or two under their belt. They can run a cone course without spinning out consistently.

Honestly I wish I could enter the competition. Wish this wasn't on the 24th.

Wei240
06-14-2007, 11:30 AM
i was only kidding about the beginner tandem, obviously that would only be for my amusement as i see novices crash into each other

i can't see how novices would want competition style, i'm just remembering on how the last drift day event at el toro, there is a vast disparity in skill levels between the advance group and the beginner, most of what i saw was they were spinning out, understeering and crunching cones as they are learning...

wei240.. I think you're still missing the point

there's guys that want to get into competition that still aren't even ready for most of the competitive stuff we have nowadays.

Do you remember the old drift day competitions? no tandem, single runs, fairly simple course? I'm guessing it will be a lot like this, for those who are looking to transition into the competition thing. I'm sure it's not intended to be an understeer competition, there's plenty of drivers that will watn to get in on this i'm sure

a lot of people get really nervous/antsy over competition, and having a beginner event might be a better way for some to transition

azndoc

Wei240 I can see how you may have some concerns about this but this is how I see the novice/beginner comp being.

It's for people like who have never done a competition before and may want to start but need a beginner starting point for themselves to gauge where perhaps they are compared to other people. With their runs judged by judges who are pros and can give them an insight as to what and why their doing wrong. I think that a lot of drivers can benefit from this comp experience by saying "I did a beginner comp and this is what I have to work on." or "I did the comp and feel that I did really good and am ready to go into a real comp. series and compete." That is what I see happening from this event. If not then it is basically for you to have some fun with some friends and have a battle to see who is the better of the group.

I know that I am still a beginner even though I have done about 6 drift events. It's not that I don't think high of myself, but it's that I'm humble about where I think my skill level is at. So to do an small comp. like this to see if perhaps I'm advancing my skill levels or not is a good opportunity for me and others.

The comp is just a way for the everyday guy experience a competition level style of driving and have fun. That's the main point of it.

AbsoluteZero
06-14-2007, 01:10 PM
^I think that is a great idea as well cause most of the competitions that go on are for the advanced drivers. This seems like a great way for some of the begginers to learn better techniques and to get the feel of a competition style environment

Often times, the people with the least amount of information assume the most about events like this.

It is quite amusing to see how smart people pretend to be.

i don't know who you're referring to alex, but again, i'm not bashing this event, just trying to understand...

so this is more, closer to a intermediate thing, like an intermediate novice...

when i think of beginners, i think of them as people who've maybe done 1 or 2 cone dodging events, people who spend all day at the skid pad, doing j-turns and whatnot... you know, people who either spin out most of the time and/or understeer at courses

because i remember after my first or second cone dodging event, i don't see a reason to go to any type of comp... apparently others do? to each his own...

it's kinda like snowboarding, if you've only gone twice and you decide to take on a 60 foot table top at the terrain park where people compete and going fast,.. hats off to you...

TheSquidd
06-14-2007, 02:26 PM
If you enter this event, obviously you're not the guy that spins out every turn and just does J-turns. Just because it SAYS begininer, doesn't mean YOUR idea of beginer will be entering. What it means is , if you're not ready for a Drift Buffet comp (which IMHO is an intermediate event) on an oval WITH WALLS, if you don't have that kind of confidence drifting, YET you want to challenge yourself by being pitted against others, then maybe this is the place for you.

Wei240
06-14-2007, 02:32 PM
gotcha,

it's just that when i first saw the words "beginners comp", i thought it sounded funny and picturing people with very basic skills competing...

i do remember the old dd when they had single runs, and i believe alex won something or placed high or something with ka and open diff and i obviously wouldn't have gone thru that comp being a 'beginner'

Don't worry, not directed at you or at anyone in particular. Just... pointing out fallacies of internet use.

i do remember the old dd when they had single runs, and i believe alex won something or placed high or something with ka and open diff and i obviously wouldn't have gone thru that comp being a 'beginner'

HAHA that was... Drift Day 5. May 25, 2003. First ever Drift Day Competition. Won by Ryan Hampton, Calvin Wan got 2nd place. I ended up 3rd, baffling everyone including the course workers... The trophy is on my bookcase...

This was before tandem events were even allowed at events... heck, this was before people had dedicated drift events at tracks (it was mostly just SpeedTrial USA's group C filled with Drift Day people and staff).

But seriously folks, stop comparing parking lot events to events at the track. We should be glad we have events available within reasonable driving distances of the LA area now, especially after both Irwindale AND California Speedway gave us the boot. No, it is not a super advanced course... but for many of us, events at venues like El Toro means 1) more options are available for beginners to learn and not have to tow 100 miles to go home, and 2) other groups and property management being receptive of drifting.

I mean, the same can't be said for Altamont... who knows how much time we have left @ El Toro with the speed that they're dismantling the base?

whaaaaat???? No more competition?? Nooooo gooooood.......sigh...I wonder how im going to get enough tire for HTM lol...

Wei240
06-15-2007, 10:41 AM
htm is a track, surface is smooooooth,
i went the entire day and still had 80% left from brand new tires

with that 80%, i went thru el toro and ate it all up in less than 2 hours...

it's not that el toro is bad (i think the worst one is in camirillo airport lot?), it's just that wsir is smooth

but back on to this thread,
it seems like the beginner comp is interesting, novices who don't spin out = me, hopefully it's postponed to el toro again...

Hmmm weird... I'm sure you're confusing people LOL...

...so this is only Saturday now?...???

Sorry for any confusion. The Private Drift event for the June 23rd is still on like Donkey Kong, but it's only and only the June 24th Comp that's been postponed. I"m bummed too.

So there's still plenty of spots left for the sat. event. So sign up people.
