Hmm...I made a thread but let me reword this one better:

I have a 1995 KA24DE w/ 155,000 miles on the odo

Okay, so I was fixing my timing chain rattling noise because it was getting pretty damn annoying. So I took off the valve cover, the dist(which I forgot to mark) and removed the guides. Then I put everything back together and sealed it in hopes that the rattling noise would be gone. But low and behold, the engine cranks but wont start. So I started fiddling w/ the dist (moving it left/right advance/retard) and the engine almost starts or doesnt even come close depending on how far the dist is moved left/right. After like 30 min of fiddling with it, I decided it would be easier to remove it and try reinserting it and lining up the teeth. But after that it would ALMOST start, cranks, but doesnt start. I'm not sure what happened, so the next day I reset the timing to TDC (W/ the pulley turning it clockwise, is turning it more than once clockwise bad for the timing?) with the dist rotor approx at spark plug number 1:

1 2
<--- Rotor facing this way <<<
3 4

and I tried again. Still cranks, but doesnt start. Then I get really confused and check the spark plugs. Turns out the spark plugs were flooded w/ oil, and some got onto the tips of the plugs. So I cleaned them and tried again. Still, some more oil gets on, but a little bit less. So I try again, until there is no more oil on the tips.

Great, but it still doesnt start. Not sure what happened...maybe the dist is too far off that's why it cranks but doesnt start? I can feel exhaust flow from the muffler, but the engine doesnt start. My uncle took a look at the car, and said that it may be the dist cap and rotor. So I bought a new rotor, but no dist cap. Can it be the dist cap or is my timing sooo f'd up that I might need to reset all the pulleys by hand? PLEASE HELP!!

This is what I think, you were of 180deg you turn the crank to TDC 2x, so your still off 180deg. Try again but don't overshoot TDC. Reset the dizzy start the car. Your almost there take you time, even if you have to do it again.

#1 timing is wrong
-set cylinder #1 to tdc with the cam lobes facing apart
-remove distributor
-line up hash marks on distributor and re-insert
-play with dist as you crank it
-if you can't get it to start you are still one tooth off on the dist
-remove dist and move it over one tooth in whichever direction is appropriate and try starting again

#2 if oil is getting on the plugs where the plug wires go in, you fucked up the inner oil gasket for the valve cover

Thanks for the help, the dist was off by two teeths and the dist rotor was off by 45 degrees. Problem solved!
