View Full Version : advice on cleaning iavc

ok i do have a idle problem, you know when you drive and left go of clutch and the idle dips below 1 and sometimes the car just dies. well so far i've cleaned my mafs and checked all my vaccum lines and put clamps on them but still same problem. so i'm going to try to clean the iavc

the question..

I've done my research you can use intake cleaner or sea foam to clean it but what i read in some of the posts i can stick some sea foam or intake cleaner in one of the hoses while the car is on to clean it instead of taking everything apart. is this possible? man i wish there was a write up on this cause most of the ones i've seen are for ka not sr20 but if you could help that would be great.

Yah i did it on the sr. Its the smaller pipe on your intake manifold off. THe small pipe is also connected to the cold pipe, which is right next to the intake pipe from intercooler. Just run the car and pull the pipe off and puff some into there. It might stall the car and it might be a hard start after that, but it will come up again. If you put different intake and exhaust cams or aftermarket flywheel, this problem of dipping under whne under braking can occur. You just need to up your idle 950 or so

Secondly, sometimes if your brake booster is blown, under braking your RPMS will dip and your engine will die because your booster is leaking vacuum too.

Best way to test your brake booster is to idle the car and keep pumping the brakes hard and rapidly. If your car stays at idle without a stumble, then your booster is fine, otherwise your booster is your vacuum leak. (Time for a new one.)

yea i found that a long time ago but i was looking for something more on the lines of a sr20 motor. i didn't know if somethings were different.

Step 1: Ask yourself. Is my car recirculated, or atmospheric BOV? Atmospheric= Tighten BOV a bit. Not too much, it will never stop dipping. Recirculated= Can't be the bov causing the dip, let me clean the IACV

Step 2: Tighten BOV if Atmospheric. EDIT: Big hose connected to cold pipe. Give me a picture, I'll use "paint" to distinguish the hose if this isn't enough. Pop hose off intercooler, spray air intake cleaner inside. Seafoam dirties the spark plugs and O2 sensor, so just avoid it unless you're replacing those sometime soon. Carb clean and throttle body cleaner are a bit different. Just use throttle body cleaner. Start the car, start pulsing that shit in there. If you spray for X amount of time, the engine will hesitate and stall. Quick bursts are all thats necassary.

Step 3: Drive car, and realize that your RPM's will still dip down =).

Step 4: Always rev-match downshift coming up to light, and always stay in gear when going through turns.

i just tried that break booster test and it makes my rpm all messed up, i guess i found my answer

where is your maf at?

if it is on the intake side of the turbo between turbo and filter then it will do that.

if it is, take the time to put it some where just before the throttle body, it wont cut out anymore because if it is before the turbo the computer reads all the air that is getting "blown off" as air that is actually entering the motor, so it runs rich and dies.

if it is after the turbo the sensor reads how much air is actually being used and overall it just runs better too,

*edit- it's not the brake booster, there is a one way valve on the vacuum hose going to brake booster so that is not an option, if it were being affected by the booster then the valve would be bad and you would know because you would be running boost through the booster causing the brakes to be applied all the time, I guess you learn stuff when you work on your own car, hmmm, if it happens under braking its because the throttle body is not longer opened, again, causing the maf to read more airflow then what is actually being used,
