on my 90 240 the brake light just started coming on. It happens while Im driving and it doesnt really feel like the hand brake is engaging. Do I just need more brake fluid? To be honest I havent checked yet. Any advice as always is greatly appreciated.

There will be a test:
Okay - brakes operate off of a closed hydraulic system. Closed = no fluid use/loss. Brakes work by hydraulic fluid pushing your pads against your rotors. Excess hydraulic fluid is stored in the resevoir. When the fluid level in the resevoir becomes low, your brake light turns on. Over time, the pads will wear down from the friction and require replacement. When the pads wear down, the hydraulic fluid has to travel a greater distance to push the now smaller pads against the rotors. That greater distance means it takes more hydraulic fluid from the resevoir to fill the lines to push the pads.

Q: If the brakes are a closed hydraulic system and the light is on, signaling low fluid level - what is the cause?

BTW: you should NEVER add brake fluid unless you are bleeding.

You could check the stop light switch that is connected to your brake pedal. It may be that when the brake pedal is depressed it is not pressing in the switch to open the circuit. I had a similar problem. All I had to do was tighten the bolt around the switch to give it a little less movement and then everything was good

Good luck,

You need brake pads.. I had mine coming on, I checked the front pads and they were worn down... I put new ones on, bled the brakes, and put in fluid and the light went off.

Ditto what BboyOxygen said. I had the same thing, on again off again brake light. So I did my brakes and bye bye light.

I'm with Kerv, check the brake light switch first. You might only need to tighten a bolt.

most likely you are low on brake fluid, nothing major.. my car has done it a few times.
