Converted mine to 134a today because it got to 100'F. I drained the system completely and put new studs on valves and proceeded to refill. (a/c on high blah blah) It holds like 38oz total and I didn't get 18 in when the gauge was in yellow saying caution, like 65psi.. My air was slightly cool but not cold. Tried releasing pressure and still said same thing. And I was told my orphice tube is clogged t/f? So I drove about 12 miles with it on full blast(a/c) and my car didn't feel right all of a sudden and I happened to look at my temp gauge and it is like 2-3mm from maxed out. Why would it overheat from a/c. I know bad gas mileage is caused alot in part by a/c usage but overheating?!? WTF?? Please let me know what you think. thanks.

a/c does pull more power from the engine(but under full load dis-engauges) but just driving around it might put a little more strain on the engine and make it run harder, but should not cause overheating, is your car modified at all? turbo, radiator, e-fans , ext? check everything over in the engine cooling system again and make sure nothing is off, make sure your fluids are topped off. If you have an e-fan, check the relay to see if its burnt out.

if it is still a problem, look into a new thremostat

New thermo, stock fans, e-fan wired directly through battery by switch, and non turbo. So could my a/c having too much pressure put even more strain on the engine. As soon as I let it coll and drove it was fine. I drove to work and back today and it still is fine.

if you drove it today and noticed nothing, i would let it go unless it does it again, sometimes small things act up and it could have just been an error with the electrical system and it read funny. Drive it some more, and see if it acts up at all, if it does turn the a/c down and see if it still does it.

Overheating would be caused by high condenser temps. The heat has to go somewhere and that somewhere is right in front of your radiator. When charging the system was your condenser fan running? If condenser is hot, you will see very high high-side pressures and the system will probably end up undercharged. You can either make sure your fans are running or flow cool water over the condenser with a hose while charging. As for the overheating, you may need more fan, a better rad, or both to cope with the higher heat load. When we conducted our radiator tests a few years ago, the stock rad and fan would overheat sitting still with the AC on. It just can't keep the car cool, and the AC will obviously suffer. Check the time to overheat with the stock fan and clutch fan near the bottom of the page.
