View Full Version : Did I destroy my pressure plate?

I finally got my SR running and I was gonna take it out for it's first test drive, but that didn't go too well. I pressed the clutch in and immediately felt the engine bog down, so I turned the car off right away. After pulling the tranny off I came to the realization that I had installed the throwout bearing BACKWARDS. So when the non moving bearing met the moving pressure plate you could imagine what happened. I installed a brand new RPS clutch and I am wondering if I destroyed the pressure plate by putting the bearing in backwards. There is about a 1/16" lip gouged into the teeth, and they created a small lip when the metal was pushed outward. I cleaned up the lip with a dremel, but the I was wondering about the condition of the teeth. Is it still usable or am I gonna have to end up buying another $400 clutch and pressure plate?

You may need another pressure plate(wait for others opinions), but IF you do, don't buy then entire set... Just get the pressure plate separate... I would think the company you bought from sells them individually.
If not, try clutchnet, act, or other brands.

I sent an email to their US distributor and I hope I can just buy the pressure plate. Otherwise it's another $400 for another clutch kit that I SHOULD NOT have had to buy if I didn't make this mistake. I'm really kicking myself for this one. Plus I would really hate to have to pull the tranny off in another month if the old pressure plate fails.
it's not bad. you can still use it. I've seen worst even when installed correctly.

i would say your pressure plate is fine judging from the pictures. Just install your throw out bearing in place (correctly this time) and go back at it. Since you have a SR you should always have a tow rope in your trunk so whats the worst that can happen? Wasn't time is better then wasted money.

Keep in mind that the fingers were completely flat when I bought it. It did not have a small indent where the bearing goes, the bearing itself made that indent. It seems kind of risky to me seeing is that the bearing is now pushing on 1/2 the amount of steel that used to be there.

I am sorry but if you install the bearing on the wrong way - then you deserve for this pricey mishap to happen!

He did not ask to be judged for a wholly possible mistake, he asked for opinions/information.
If you are not offering that, you're offering empty words.
Man, why would you post some bullshit like that? Anyone with common sense would leave someone to wallow in the ugliness of their own mistake, man.

wow cause you've never made an honest mistake in your life, Mr. perfect. This is my first motor swap ever and I'd say I was doing pretty damn good up until this point. I mean the motor ran and it was ready to test drive until I ran into this problem. Silly kids, I'm not some punk kid, I'm a 27 year old grown man. Get off you high horse, and next time you think about posting, DON'T

I have about 6-7 emails out to various places inquiring about the replacement pressure plate. I don't see why I can't get just the plate instead of an entire clutch kit.

you can get pressure plates seperate, just might not be what you had before, I guess it depends on the answers you get in your emails. Don't listen to haters man, you keep on doin what you're doin, everyone makes mistakes.

throw out bearing being installed backwards, that's a novel thought, why didn't the person that started this thread think of that? :D

Just put the throw out bearing back on the CORRECT WAY THIS TIME and see what happens. Its shouldnt be nothing. Well if you want, make sure you can buy just the pressure plate first.

Robert from MVP motorsports just called me back and said he could do the new pressure plate with 4 day shipping for $295.10. Seems like a good place to work with. I would recommend them to anyone needing 240 parts.

Dude. file down the grooves. somehow rig something up to spin the pressure plate, while you hold a grinder to even the grooves evenly. the hydraulic will compensate for the slack created. or.. mount the pressure plate on the motor, start the beotch up.. get under the car, flatten those grooves enough so the TO can rest evenly on the surface. that or just put the TO up to the pressure plate and see just where it touches. the area is actually very small since the surface is round..you might as well buy a new clutch set.. its not too much cheaper to buy a pressure plate. ill sell you my spec stage 2 pressure plate ;-).. cheap too haha.
