Well I am in Nebraska, and there is a RHD 240 there that I want.. I can travel up there and haul it back on a trailer, BUT what do I need to do to get it across the border, AND what do I need to do to get it street legal?

Any help would be appreciated!!! BTW, I did use the search button, but could not find my answer!

I need to be able to get it insured, and licensed to drive it everyday..

Thanks!!!

buy a good left hand drive car. your going to go through hell for cool points... its not worth it to have a car like that unless its yoru absolute dream car or a super clean well taken care of skyline i wouldnt wast my time. your going to go through hell. and if you have to pass smog etc. and its a true silvia with the sr20det motor you wont be able to get very far in the whole legal process. now if its just a 240 with a right hand drive conversion go for it.

Any applicable information that would provide proof of ownership would be needed. (IE. A Bill of Sale, a signed over title if the car has one, ect...) To bring the car itself into the country has no legal implications. It's trying to register, inspect and pass your states smog requirements that will be the problem.

What he said.

RHD 240SX = Some fool cut up a clean chassis in his backyard for style points.

RHD Silvia = Illegal car, mainly sold to ride the JDM bandwagon, hard to pass inspection, emissions, and all other standards.

But hey, you're sitting on the wrong fucking side of the car, so you must be cool, right?

Well, he's talking about driving across the boarder, so maybe he's thinking about getting a 180sx imported to Canada

It's not going to be legal in the US anyway.

It would be the coolest mail delivery car ever.
I cannot fathom a practical reason to want to drive a RHD car daily, at all

if it's a JDM car that was imported into Canada, then there is no way to legally register it in the states. If it's a CDM car that's been hacked, you should be ok.

There are ways for things but in most cases there isnt a good reason to try and make a rhd car for daily.

unless its different on its own, or you plan to do something else with it later on, there really isnt much of a good reason to daily rhd.

unless you just dont care and think of it as "just a car"

My friend drives a Nissan Silvia K's, it's registered and insured. I have no idea how he did it, but if he gets back to me I'll let you know.

this is nebraska we are talking about, I don't think the cops out there worry too much about imported cars.

and here we go again with the fartnagget RHD threads. *sigh* yes RHD is a bitch to drive int he states. its pointless to do it unless you're making room for a big ass turbo set up, or just plain the ricer kid in you. I personally did it for both. I have an RB and I plan to go big. my car has a silvia front end on it so fuck it
I did it. I daily my car, and its cool for the most part, just little bullshit gets in the way, (Drive through, Passing 2 lane roads, making right turns, etc etc) but over all I like it, and yes Im a ricer shoot me. so go knock your self out. it;s alot of work, or alot of cash for one properly converted. non the less RHD is a headache whichever way you put it.

JDM cars being legally imported into Canada is going to change soon. Emissions laws etc. are going to be changed. FYI an SR is illegal in Canada as well. 90% of city cops (even in the major centers) and most customs inspectors for import purposes, just don't know what they're looking at when you pop your hood. Some don't know a turbo from a toilet plunger. haha

Besides, people here get raped on prices and don't even know it... they're so in love with the "OMG!!! it's a RHD JDM TYTE CAR!!!!" they become blind to the price tag. A local business here imports Skylines etc... I took a look at some they have, just for kicks. They wanted $14,000 for an R32 GTR with 75,000+ miles on it, with very minimal mods, and it's probably been beat on hard by it's former owner(s) across the pond.

My advice to the OP would be don't buy it, it's not worth the hassle... it's probably mostly stock that's been beat on hard by both the original owners in Japan, and whoever owns it in Canada

As far as the legalities of importing a JDM car from canada to the states i have no clue...But living in Calgary AB, i can tell you that after driving and riding in HCR32, BNR32, RPS13 and Fairlady z32 i would have to say that buying a USDM 240 and putting an SR or RB in it is a much wiser choice. although you get alot of looks and plenty of power from JDM cars, 99.999% of them have been BAGGED on, big time. Not to mention that if there is any mods done to them they are most likely hack jobs. I'm just speaking from personal expeirence. As far as smog testing goes i also have no clue as there is no such thing in alberta...i run 3 inch straight pipe from the turbo back, no resonators,no cat and a big ass muffler

Quoted for truth. But smog testing is going to be coming to Canada soon, they've already started to implement it in B.C. IIRC, and the federal government is looking at regulations and options for testing on older model vehicles. Better start taking tips from people driving in cali on avoiding and/or passing smog, cause soon that will be here in Canada too.

I have watched a lot of the import biz for quite a while and the way it goes is.

they sell the name, "r33 GTR" just says a lot right there
some sell mild cars that were driven by some random jp guy since they are so common over there.
you usually find a lot of importer's selling the ones with a lot of mods on them, somewhat of a selling point to some since it has so much yatta yatta but those ones are the ones with high miles and/or abused quite a lot.

legalizing from canada is dying out, customs with the correct paperwork doesnt care, neither does the dmv but like i said Correct paperwork.

the few good importers that find good cars want a but load usually, example a friend of mine has a r33 right now has 42000kms on it and yeah it is a GTR, registration and title and already stateside he wants 33k but its almost like new.

forgot how much he sold one of his 34 gtr's but yeah there is a premium for getting a legal rhd car.

There is one guy I know who did a lhd swap on his toyota mark2 (shows how much he loves the car).

get it if the title and registration is straight along with the car, but just dont wine about developing a rubber neck or having to go inside wendy's since you dont like to go backwards in the drive thru.

If it has a U.S. title and dot shit all over the place then you should be able to get it registered. As far as insurance I have no clue.

Username Ryan_s-14 has a jdm s14, that's registered and insured. Maybe you can pm him and ask him how he did it

insurance is easy for s13's and s14's ... just tell them that.

anything else they need to have a look at it to give you an accurate quote. likely want to see the bill of sale to try and get an idea of how much after looking at the car.
