Ok so i got a ticket from a police officer the other day for no seat belt...I did have a seat belt on which was my sparco harness. Ok. so he walked up and said when did you put that on right now? and i said no i had it on. he still gave me a ticket for no seat belt. then he said that the seat belt that came with the car wasnt on so it didnt matter. but the seat belt was broken and removed and replaced with a sparco harness. Spoke to some guys at a local shop and he said somewhere in the vehicle codes book that it specified that cars up to 1991 that were equipped with a harness (lap and shoulder) was acceptable. any info? maybe someone knows the section and what not for the vehicle code....

4 point harnesses are not street legal unless it says so specifically on the harness itself.

if i recall correctly. sparco harnesses are not legal.

There are only a few DOT approved harnesses

I believe Schroth (sp) makes some...

Sparco does not

you're SOL...go to court, say you were misinformed by a shop and cross your fingers

Also, replace it w/ a stock seatbelt and take a picture to show in court

Hopefully they'll drop the fine

Nope nothing you can do. It is a fact that Sparco harnesses are not DOT legal. The cop knows that too. Yah maybe do what mainevent212 said, but pretty muc screwed.

Schroth is the only street legal one.

It's been the law that you can't rock a harness for the most part.

Side note. How is your harness mounted? Better make sure it's safe.

Matter of Opinion vs DOT legality.

Charlie, never come to cali. IT IS the nanny state. Helmet laws, Speed Limits, Confusing Diamond Lane laws, Temperamental Exhaust system laws (95 Decibels or Modified/Unmodified, both on the books).

You should be allowed to rock it w/o a seatbelt in my opinion. Though, when they find you piled up w/o a seatbelt, they probably shouldnt take you to the hospital w/o medical insurance either.

feel what you want, they arent safe unless used properly.. and that means with a rollbar.

second, if they're 4pt, they better be DOT compliant (schroth).

period.

They way I understand it, is that it is illegal to modify safty equipment on any car in CA. Can't you get a ticket for removing your factory air bag steering wheel for an after market? DMV told me it must be in place if your car came with one from the factory.

eh who the fuck cares, bite the bullet, take the ticket and tell the cop to fuck themselves cause you have a safer restraint than everyone else.
just goes with having a modified car i guess..

If I recall, my friend had the same problem. He did some research and found out that harnesses are legal in cars before air bags. The only thing was where they were connected. They had to be connected to the place where the original seat beats where connected. That's actually not a good thing, because the seat belts are connected on the floor, by the doors, which means if the get into an accident, your probably going to be more messed up, but that happens to be the only legal way (nationally). Locally it might be different. Once again, I wasn't the one who did the research on this, but the DOT legal harnesses allow you to mount the harness in a different location.
He went to court and show them all of the things from the different places with pictures of his set up, and at first they said that they would remove the points (it's consider a moving violation here) if he'd paid the fine, but he kept fighting, and won. (By the way, he's going into law school in the fall.)

yeah it might be on location, like ixfxi getting pulled over, same situation with me when i got pulled over by cops. the officer even saw me remove my harness to get my registration out of my glove box and didnt mention anything about my belts.

Uh, isnt it just like a $25 ticket? Just pay it and get on with your happy little life.

Technically though, the cop is right. You arent allowed to modify any of the car's OEM safety equipment (including airbag steering wheels, seat belts, etc) unless you are replacing it with something DOT approved (and have documentation or a sticker/patch to prove it) like everyone mentioned. Usually cops wont ticket you for that kind of shit though unless they are trying to be dicks. It's hit or miss. Ive been pulled over plenty of times with just harnesses and they have never said a word.

because it holds you down instead holding you back like a fucking harness should with a roll bar. bolting in the floor under 60 degree angle aint the solution

The problem is not the fact that it holds you down tighter, although there are some injuries that occur to your back by the harness compressing your spine. If the car rolls over and the roof collapses a harness will hold you straight upright in your seat, snaping your neck. The Schroth has a section that will give allowing your upper body to move toward the middle of the car like a stock seat belt will. That is why you have to have a roll bar to protect the roof from collapsing in a rollover.

I don't see how people could daily drive with a harness on its a pain in the arse. I caint even reach the radio with mine on.
