I have a 95 240sx that probably this summer will get a sr20 transplant s14 with 6 speed or 5 speed tranny, how long do they last at 400rwhp? are they built like subarus that always break when theres too much power or are they strong even at 400hp? I dont want to be changing it every 3 months.. :wiggle:

it all depends how you drive it.
im sure you can destroy an s14 tranny with 200hp. also im sure you could daily drive a 600hp car with stock s14 tranny if you take it easy.
hp is just like boost..... you dont always use it all when driving the car.

You should have no problems at 400 whp as mr_240sx said. If you spend the money to get some descent numbers and don't beat it to submission and you'll no worries.

when you do break them, get the z tranny, look up mazworks, serious stuff... they run a 9 second car or something ridiculous and putting out hefty power
or you can ball out and get them to begin with and never worry, ever...

Most people actually stick with the 5 speed in Japan. I was looking into doing a S15 6 speed and friends in Japan said that the 5 speed is more reliable and cheaper to get. Most people in Japan stick with the 5 speed.

The 6 speed is not stronger it is actually slightly weaker.

All i got is one pic of the proto, but my max is 50kb that i can up for some reason, not 500kb
don't try to upload it to zilvia. host it on a 3rd party site such as photobucket (http://photobucket.com/) or imageshack (http://imageshack.us/) and then copy the link into your message using [img] tags.
edit: maybe your post was meant for the S15 thread

you should be ok with an s14 tranny. if it blows then you can find another s14 tranny or go z route.... simple

^^^ agreed use the S14 tranny. Plus S15 trannys are hella expensive. If you break one have fun buying another one.

If I remember correctly, the trannies are the same, just different bell housings.

s15 tranny is weak.
S13 or s14 is fine.
But why are you even asking? Everyone I know who has 400hp isn't dumb enough to have a need to ask on a forum...
Small steps. First find a motor and install it.
Then worry about power. Because you're getting way ahead of yourself.
Not ALL subaru tranny's are weak. It was only a few.Not to mention awd + sticky tires and added hp. But then again, I redid my tranny before so it hasn't happened to me, but who cares.
Lesson to be had. Don't mod your car like an idiot.

Well I just wanted some info before I throw money at my car and have to change tranny every 30k, Lots of people with new sti's are changing theirs even stock, seems to be some problems. Anyway Ill keep my tranny and just start with a motor then, thanks.

why do you need 400 hp

Why are you basing your ideas of how many miles a sr tranny would last you with a sti tranny. Doesn't make sense to me.
Every tranny has a different history of how it was driven and cared for. So basing your thinking of that a SR tranny won't last just because a STI's tranny doesn't last is retarded. It's a matter of luck. Sometimes you get lucky and don't have to change your tranny for a while driving a certain way and sometimes you get crap tranny that has to be changed out right away. That's how life goes.

I read alot of subaru forums because I have one, and I was just saying how under alot of hp most dont last to long, Like people saying get "bla bla tranny if your going over 350whp, and I wanted to know how strong a sr one was kinda around the same hp, because I dont hear alot about trannys in nissan forums, well except for 350z I hear those have lots of problems too, people changing even at 20k and such.

buy a rebuilt KA tranny on ebay, swap SR bellhousing onto it. or, get the z32 maxworx conversion. or, buy a ppg gearbox gear set, or os giken gear set. ka/sr tranny's are decently cheap. even if u do replace one every 36k/3 years.. $300 over the period of time? who cares. just do it. worry about all this shit later.

I have one also. Yes, the trannies are a little weak, but most of the people who drive them are ricers who abuse the fuck out of them. Then there are the people who modify the car. People who spend countless dollars into building more power yet leave the tranny alone. Like I said before, if you are going to be making so much power with awd you might as well upgrade the tranny. I went as far as changing the gear ratios in there, but that's up to you...

I heard if you don't run a clutch at all you won't have to worry about blowing it or burning it out.

Sr 6 speed gears are physically smaller.
keep the s14 ka tranny you have and use the s14 sr tranny for the swap. from here you can clean the gears and replace them with new or improved gears while still out there with the sr tranny.
when the sr tranny takes a dump *it can happen to the best of us* simply do the bellhousing swap and walla you got yourself a fairly good transmission ready to go.
or do the z32 trans.
you would be suprised how a much more frequent gear oil change helps. also if you get bored you can have the trans sent off to get cryogen'd or install a mission/diff cooler.
iirc they also make a bellhousing that allows people to use the fs5r30a transmission(the z32 but this a completely pre-casted bell housing not an adapter).
there is quite a bit of choices as you see.
