cars been running 100% , its a bone stock 93' S13 KA Coupe, it reved all the way to redline (6400 if i recall correctly) before, then i went to install an aem cai, i disconnected the maf as part of the install and then reconnected it, i put everything back together, car runs fine, but the rev limiter kicks in at exacly 5k now, ????, i tried resetting the ecu by disconnected the negative from the battery, and letting it sit for an hour, still does the 5k limiter, im not sure? am i resetting the ecu incorrectly? i even cleaned the maf with crc maf cleaner after the install, anything u guys can think of? im assuming the ecu is in a "safe mode"
thanks

Safe mode is 2500rpm. This is most likely a loose connection issue. Check the plug/wire for corrosion and stuff like that. Its probably corroded and you broke a connection when you unplugged it and moved it around. If the car is stumbling on idle and just not running very well the check the vacuum lines, you might have forgotten to reconnect one, or one may have slipped off.

i let the car sit again a 2nd time, 3 hours this time with negative disconnected, i checked all the vacuum lines, there all accounted for, still the car runs 100%, but the rev limiter engages at 5k, anything else guys? should i run the ecu diagnostic mode? get the codes, clear it?

when you unplugged your maf, you more than like stressed a weak, old solder point.
ive seen the 5k revlimit happen before. watch this vid, might be your problem:

one trick you can do is try to "tug up" on the plug with a ziptie, and see if the driveability change, or you can always borrow someone elses maf.

thankyou

you want him to explain what "tugging" means?
Hes saying your wiring to your maf sensor is shotty. IE signal or power to the maf is not getting to and from properly, inspect your wiring/plug etc.
pretty simple

no its not simple
its probably not the wiring
its probably inside the MAF
he needs to use the top of the airbox bracket as the mounting point, and tie some wire to it, loop it around the bottom of the MAF plug to tug it 'upward' a little, and then tie it back at the top again. Think of it like you are holding your maf plug to make it tight....now just lift a little upward....wrap some wire around it to make the same effect.

i reset the ecu with the diagnostic mode on the ecu, i bought a different maf, tried that, same problem, runs 100% then rev limiter kicks on at exactly 5k, cleaned them both with crc maf cleaner? my freind says its a problem with the ignition system, or the ecu has gone bad, what u guys think?

check your 5th gear sensor. mine was bad for the longest time and i thought it was the maf the entire time till i just disconnected the 5th gear sensor. b4 my redline was 5k also, after unplugging it, revs freely to redline.

i have a 91 coupe, can u tell me exactly where the 5th gear sensor is? pic or diagram is greatly appreciated, ive gotten alot of different answers, and do i have to reset my ecu for this to come into effect?

I have a stock S13 KA too with the same problem, but I found out the hard way during a track event! Thought it was the MAF too, but it was the 5th gear sensor. Disconnected that thing and BAM, revs all the way up now!
Heres the link to the thread;

Hopefully its the same problem and this fixes it! Good luck!

i pulled the 5th gear sensor, reset the ecu from the diagnostic mode, nothing, i did the same thing with every sensor on the tranny just to be sure, nothing, u guys think my ecu might have just suddenly gone bad?
