Hi, names Matt and I'm 16. I've always want a skyline, I think thats about everyone's dream but then i discovered reality. Anways I'm thinking realistically and want to build an ultimate 240 kouki. I'm currently trying to find one lol and have been looking since last year. A 97 or 98 would be good I don't like the whole round headlights of the zenki. I've learned my lessons in who to trust and who not to trust when dealing with buying cars (almost been scammed twice lol). I've been inspired (kinda sounds gay) by 240's on the skylineking website. I don't understand anything about the engine components, mods, etc. I know in a few years after working on my kouki (if I even ever get one) I will have some basic knowledge. I want a 240 with a s14 sr20 blacktop because it's the most simplest sr20 to put into a kouki/zenki 240. Then i read somewhere about how the s15 sr20 is alot better than the 240 in the long run and can handle more under tougher conditions. Others suggested to some guy, to get a rb25 installed in his 240 but I thought that was just some "mystical" swap since it seems like a pain in the @ss to do and would require a lot of work. I found this one kouki with a 180sx blacktop, and found that the car was illegal to drive on the streets. I understand that japanese smog regulations is different from US's smog regulations but I wanted to know how I can make a kouki legal with a sr20det whether it being a s14 sr20 or s15 sr20 or even a rb25. And I found another kouki just today with a s14 sr20det blacktop swap and was really interested in purchasing it but didn't know if it was legal to drive on the streets. I don't know how so many people have sr20 swaps and get away with it. I know this may sound dumb but i thought that they may have to swap back their ka24 before the smog test and then they put back their sr20. Because I imagine if you were to swap a sr20 and modify it to regulate under CA's smog regulations you would have a crappy and "non-potential" engine. What other laws would I have to follow in order to pass all those smog tests and is it only smog I have to pass or other laws (heard of something called DOT laws???); if you guys can give me some tips and answer the question above that would help alot. I know most of you guys have been modding your "babies" all your life so hopefully you can hand it down to another (soon to be) 240 owner. [sorry for writing sooo long but hopefully you can help me out I wish I could write more but for right now those are my top questions that keep running through my mind, btw I live in the OC just to let you know because I know different states have different requirements]

Well first off all u live in cali thats the bad part of ur whole dream of building this 240 of urs haha second of all ur not gonna pass smog in cali with an s2 swap no matter what u do to i mean if u wanna do the swap u better get te car first and the first thing ur gonna have to do is fucken smog that shit with the stock motor once u do that then u can do ur motor swap and then once u have to do smog again then ur gonna have to have a hook up with that basically ur gonna have to do it by having someone smog another 240 but with ur paper work but good luck on that one cause its hard to find someone to actually do that just for anyone. The next thing ur gonna have to worry bout is the fucken cops well depends were u drive around cause some cops r assholes and if u get popped ur gonna have to go to the state ref. and well u'll be fucked cause u wont pass with a swap so yeah good luck buddy!

lol
I have nothing to add for the original poster that has not been mentioned already...with the exception that modding a 240 can be quite expensive.

Spend less time dreaming and more time learning. Watch events at the track. Talk to drivers. If possible watch or help work on someone else's car. Take rides whenever possible.
Dig through the FAQ section here and get educated.
Save up money. Never cheap out. Have a plan, stick to it. Don't get too invested in your car, remember there's more to life than that.
Don't street race. It count's for nothing, and if something goes wrong, everyone involved and those that didn't plan to be are the losers.
There's no price at which crap is a good bargain.
oh, and don't double post on zilvia

yea sorry about double posting. Thanks for all the advice. And yes i'm located in OC the one in socal. This is gonna be a hard choice for me then because the only reason I wanted the 240 was for the sr20 swap so I might have to look for another car. Man... Well I'm young so of course I want to street race! haha i know how dumb it is but its the feeling of going fast that makes me want to race. I'll try not to because I know how much crap I can get into. But yea I'll take a look at the faq section. Thanks alot guys. Ohh and 1 more thing I want to stick with the kouki but the ka24 is kind of week my dad has an 00' altima which has the ka24 and wasn't impressed by its performance. so my question is how much hp can you generate out of a ka24 and is it a fairly easy upgradeable motor?

Man, this is EXTRA old, please use the search function and look at sticky threads and the FAQ section, most questions can be answered without having to ask.
If unsure, search 3 more times, then google twice, THEN start a thread about it.
