hey guys,

a friend of mine just bought a 85 and an 84(parts) 300zx turbo
the 84 engine is in the 85and the 85 has been completely rebuilt: ross pistons(cast) forged crower rods, and a forged crank, the turbo is the stock water cooled(needs a rebuild) and he gave me the parts car and all that was extra that he didnt need ie: Built engine and rebuilt tranny hehe

the body is a total wreck, the ecu and wiring harnes are still in working order...JWT will make sure of that!!

now i was wondering

1. what is this engine called?
2. would it be a real big pain in the ass to swap it into my s14?
3. since 2 is not a real option, what would be a good LIGHT body that i could gut aand install the setup into, i was thinking a 280 maybe there is a 280 "graveyard" about 30 min from my house, now i have a 93 eclipse gs...(fwd nt)
would it be difficult to do to that car??
4. what are some if any aftermarket turbos that fit this particular car?

1. VG30ET.
2. YES. Custom mounts, lots of stuff won't clear. It's a waste of time anyway... the VG30ET is not that great a platform compared to the KA.
3. "280"? You mean 280Z or 280ZX? The 280ZX is heavy... and neither car would really readily accept this engine (though they could). Try a 1987-88 200SX SE V6 (S12)... they used the non-turbo version of this engine.
4. I believe the stock turbo is a Garrett T3, so anything that'll fit a Garrett T3 flange...

I just got some issues with what you said....

How is the VG not as good as the KA? I personally have a friend that has dynoed his 85' Z with a ton of miles at 400+ HP at the wheels and it did not cost him an arm and a leg

280ZX is heavy compared to the earlier Z's, that means it wieghs about the same as 240SX's (2800~lbs) The VG motor has been swapped very succesfully into early Z's goto Hybridz.org for more info on that swap. Also read on this forum I believe that turboing the VG in a S12 is not as easy as you would think, something to do with the crossover pipe for the turbo iirc

I didn't say it wasn't as good. Perhaps I should be clearer - it's not that much better that it's worth the hassle of fitting it to a 240SX.
