View Full Version : What do you do with your steering wheel?

Sorry if this has already been posted, but I couldn't find it, but then again, I only spent a minute or two searching...

Anyways, I was just wondering, I know some of us here on zilvia have quick release hubs and whatnot, and a question popped into my head...

When I go places, I take off the steering wheel, put the lock on, and put the steering wheel in my backpack and take it with me (most of the time I'm either at school or work)... Other times I just put it underneath the passenger seat...

My question is, when you guys go to dinner with your girlfriend, boyfriend, family, or whatever, or when you go to buy groceries, or w/e, where do you put your steering wheel. I just wanted to see what others did with theirs because its awkward bringing my backpack to a dinner, because I don't like leaving it in the car because yes, they won't be able to drive it, but if they break in, they get a free steering wheel...

Sorry for the lengthy read, but feel free to comment, flame, or w/e you feel...

i usually put mine in the trunk when i had one. my trunk lever didnt work so the only way to open the trunk was with the key.

iono i just hide mine under the passanger seat, it was cool at first to take it every where, but it gets old

i only put mine in my trunk if i park ilegally haha... theres many myths here that if you have a uber low car w/ the wheel turned a certain way and blablablablabla that it wont get towed... dunno if any of its true, but i do put the wheel in the trunk if im doin dirt haha...

if im just goin to work it goes in my passenger seat or on the dash... cupholder holds it on the dash... so much easier to get outta the car w/ the quickrelease+bride+ultralowrail haha

I put mine in the Trunk also. At least if its in the trunk, its not exposed at all

i also have a lock & i put mine either under a seat or in the trunk. at work i used to bring it inside, in my backpack but it was too much of a hassle, so i just put it under my seat. at home i always take it inside w/me. i've contemplated keeping a cable w/a lock in my car to lock my wheel to.

I take it in the damn restaurant and include it with my coat at check-in. What is hilarious is when you have 6-10 people roll-in and everyone has there steering wheel. usually we get a table or booth and stick all the wheels in the middle. haha

some nightclubs make you check it in for security reasons.

I just stick mine in between my bucket seat and E-Brake.

I usually park in safe areas but I always lock my quick release.

If I'm in a questionable area, I'll take it with me, or throw it in the trunk if storage isn't accessible.

Here, we just throw it on the dashboard.
In the states, it'll go where I go.

when i go to school, i put it in my backpack or leave it somewhere in the car where it cant be seen (under sweater or in the trunk area).

when i park at home or at a friends house, i either bring it in with me or leave it on the dash.

05-29-2007, 10:26 AM
^Haha, I never thought about that, my girl does have one of those big purse things, I'ma see if she'll hold it for me when we go places...

Heh, I saw a post about maybe trying to find a way to tie it down or something, if you have stock s13 seats you can just use a bike lock and put it through the little hole and just hang it there (ghetto :bigok:)...

depends where im at or going..

if its the malll...i take it no matter what.

jumping in a store.no.

whats the point of even taking it off to throw it on the dash board?

to show off?

taking it off isn't going to help much..anyone with a visegrip could just clap it on and drive off.

note to self.......next time check their trunk. :coolugh:

Wei240
05-29-2007, 12:24 PM
i put mine behind the passenger seat with a kryptonite type bike lock on the seat rail, trying stealing that, hahaha
(then again, all one really need is to get a 14mm ratchet/socket wrench for the seat bolt, doh!!)

Usually when I go somewhere, there's like 6 of us with Quick Releases. So we do the old, trunk shuffle.

My wheel goes in X car
X wheel goes in Y trunk
Z wheel goes in F trunk
etc etc etc

It helps that we all have different quick releases, so a thief can break in, get the wheel, and be totally confused.

I've been trying to get into the habit of taking it off all the time... It does get quite annoying when you go to the mall and you have a steering wheel in your hand. But I guess it could be used for self defense too. I was in the 909 yesterday and you better believe I took my steering wheel with me! I guess it all depends on where I am if I take it with me or not

easier to get out of my car w/ out beatin the hell outa my bride (the main reason stock s13 seats are torn up... getting in/outta the car

and as most people who put it on our dash said [me and kevin @ least] we're not worried about our car gettin stolen.. iirc quick release weren't made to be a car theft deterant anyway.

so no... not to show off

You are wise.

It is a theft deterrant, if the fucker doesn't have a steering wheel to drive the car away with, he MIGHT not steal it. Same as an alarm is a theft deterrant, if he doesn't want people seeing him stealing a car with a huge alarm going off, he might not steal it.

^^ I'm glad there are other people that realize that alarms and removable steering wheels are simply for theft DETERRANCE and not theft PREVENTION. Just because you have an alarm, doesn't mean your car wont be stolen haha. +1.

My boss had a little VW Rabbit in like race spec form. He had it parked out in front of his Apt. one night, no steering wheel, alarm, fuses pulled, kill switched.

Wakes up the next day, walks outside to his car, notices it's about 6 ft back from where he parked it.

There's skid marks from his tires from where it was parked...

The fuckers took a CHAIN, wrapped it around his tow hook and pulled it with a fucking truck.

Morale of the story, if someone wants your car, they're going to do what ever it takes to get it. Oh and stay out of the IE.

even though its ghetto.

If you buy a Works Bell QR from Logan he lets you use his trunk for storage. He said no knockoff NRGs allowed.

I'm sure potential thieves are reading this thread. Its not hard to get in the trunk if you have the key or not. All you gotta do is fold down the rear seats.

What my friend does is he uses a metal wire from an old laptop computer security kit and he loops it through the steering wheel and side harness slot on his bucket seat and locks it.

Trust me... I know what the 909 is all about... I practically lived there for 3 years cause my ex lives over there... and I have heard lots of stories of 240s gettin stolen out there as well so I would rather be safer than sorry. I was in the ontario mills parking lot and still don't trust it!

I just take mine in with me if I go somewhere. But I only drive my 240 like twice a month so it's not that much of a hassle.

Plus women carry around their Gucci/LV purse for status symbol, so I carry my Nardi around in the same way.

i feel lame walking around with my wheel, but Im paranoid. If I cant see my car, the wheel is OFF and the lock is on. No matter where. I always think too that if u dont have a lock over the hub cant someone just unscrew that part of the QR and put on another wheel?

Damn, that's some crazy shit. The worst I've had happen was this:
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k270/quigs9808/PHOT0062-1.jpg

All of that only to take the $10 bill I had sitting under my stereo. AND THAT'S IT. People do some crazy shit for some of the dumbest reasons. And of course my alarm didn't stop them from busting out the rest of my windows as well. At least they didn't take my car.

Nah, never found out. But there is a baseball bat that now resides by my seat that is just itching to meet them :keke:

I actually considered going with lexan windows after that too, but I had to get them replaced ASAP since it's my daily, and I didnt have to resources at the time to go with the lexan. Oh well, I'm just thankful I still have my car.
