Alright, since it's 5 a.m., I can't sleep, and I've been browsing the forums of late and saw a lot about this STACK stuff and other HUDs...
I had this crazy idea, just go with me and pretend money is no object. What if you got a LCD custom cut to fit your gauge-dash and then found someone to program for you and blah blah and you created a HUD unit of sorts except it was a full LCD.
Here's the part I thought would be the coolest. What if you made it so you could switch the display between Digital ( Just #'s ) and an analogue display ( needles and all ) but the analogue would be completely digital since you were running it through this LCD.
I know it's crazy, I know it's expensive, but what are your opinions on the idea itself.

assuming money is no object it would be pretty sick...id rock one. Unfortunately thinks like the STACK etc are usually pretty expensive, but for if it was cheap or free id get one...I think what would be really sick is having something like that as your guage cluster that you could change between analog and digital read out all of your info like a stack does and then is able to switch over to a full screen navigation system/indash dvd/cd/mp3...now that would be hot

Lol, watch a movie and overlay with your gauges xD
Might get a weeeee bit distracting :P
Edit: Maybe one day somebody that is either a software engineer or knows one, and who has the cash, will do this... Would be crazy to see it... No doubt it would end up costing a four digit number though...
Maybe one day I'll do it :D But that's not for many, many, MANY years.

Digital gauges in a car are useless. I have to watch out for 70 million southern california drivers, prepare for a tight radius freeway offramp into a busy intersection and I have 10 important phone calls lined up.
185* or 196* temperature doesn't mean a damn thing, as long as the temp needle is in a good area, and there's gas in my tank I'm good to know.

What if you integrated the gauge-cluster with all the shit in your car... Bluetooth, your stereo etc...
Plus I just think it would be cool to have REALLY accurate analogue needles... Except they're really digital O.o

^^ yeah his idea isnt bad tho cause thats when you could just set it to analog but it would still be a digital needle display....i like th idea...id like to see it done

One day in the future I plan on doing this, like when I go to college...
Mainly because there I have no doubt I'll be able to find some people to help me who are enthusiastic about it as me.

I think Mercedes is planning to do something like this in the future... I recall seeing pics.
Personally, I think it's pretty useless. It's one thing if I loose an analog gauge, but it's a completely other issue if an LCD screen goes out and I cannot read shit.
The more simple, the better.

that is true....unfortunately thats not the direction car companies are going...I think they are making things increasingly complicated because they want to seem new and innovative....technology helps to make our lives easier but whenever we become dependant on it and it fails we are screwed

Although I agree with you, we're pretending money is no object and that you could instantly fork up the cash for one of these things... I dunna look at a laptop, the one I'm on right now is 3+ years old and the screen has had 0 problems thus far... Meh, if it was ever sold retail it would have to have a good warranty.

your already behind
HKS CAMP does all that shit
problem is finding all the accessories. but its still cheaper than stack, and you can LCD it.
Google

I just googled it and it said it was discontinued?
I dunna, I'm talking about something that straight-up pops into where you gauge-cluster should be as one big ass lcd and can do that + more but is mainly centered on the gauges that would be in the cluster where it's now sitting... I'm just dreaming ;)
Edit: Also, keep in mind this would be replacing your ENTIRE gauge cluster, there would be nothing but an LCD sitting there... So it's displaying everything you'd normally have but with digital accuracy... I have a few more ideas about what could be done to customize it as well... But I don't feel like explaining :P
Edit2: Ok here's a good example, it's basically this except it's flush with where the gauge-cluster would normally go, and it's showing like EVERYTHING that would normally be there... And it can be changed to have like both digital and analogue there at the same time blah blah. But here's a good photo of the HKS camp thing:

yeah, i had an HKS camp, but i couldnt find a Junction box...so i gave it away
but if your patient
yuo can piece together a setup for half the cost of a stack...which i would do, but i dont keep a car long enough to care

megasquirt is working on a full LCD display to go along with their standalone
My very first car, 1985 Chrysler Laser XE, had a "digital" instrument cluster. It was the biggest PITA, especially that late night driving home and the whole cluster died, being out of warranty and costine me $1500 to replace.
Don't have an actual pictures of mine, but I found this.

Although today I would say the technology and reliability should be better, since that was over 20 years ago.

Hah, yeah that's basically what I was thinking of with a custom-cut LCD mounted where the gauge-cluster would be...
Maybe no software engineering is required :O
