View Full Version : Serious Question About Newly Bought Springs

Hi, some of you may know that I just bought a set of KGMM S21 Super-Sport springs for my S14.

Originally, when they were being shipped from Japan, they missed the boat because supposedly the factory didnt have any more S21 boxes. Eventually they got shipped out.(this is important, remember for later)

Now I have my springs, and the box says DR21 on it. I called the store (Shine Street) and asked them why the boxes said DR21 instead of S21, and the guy reminded me that the factory ran out of S21 boxes. Basically he said that I DID get S21 springs, but they were put inside boxes labeled DR21.

Now for the real question: The S21 Springs are linear rate while the DR21 springs are Dual-Rate (Progressive). I took my newly-bought springs out of the box and took a look at them, and the best way I can describe them is this:

The top half of each spring is wound tightly while the bottom half of each spring is wound loosely. Alright, now this causes me to believe that I was sent progressibe springs instead of linear springs because I thought that linear ones were wound the same way throughout the whole spring.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was I sent the wrong springs by accident? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':nervous:'>

I think they sent you the wrong ones.

Isn't dual rate better?

how many coils (roughly) at the top/bottom are tightly wound? If it's just the very top/bottom 1 or 2 coils, it's probably linear. if it's the top/bottom 4-6 (?) or more, it's more than likely (i think) progressive.
Sounds like it might be another 2-3 weeks (if not more) before you get your springs!

Woohoo &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

Asad from Fresh Alloy reminded me about something important. Sometimes, in order to create the correct ride height with linear springs, a company will create "dead coils."

Basically, I was looking at my springs through the wheel gaps, and the part that was "tightly wound" is now compressed altogether with no gap between the coils. In other words, those coils are pretty much dead, and all they do is supplement the ride-height of the car. The part of the spring that was "loosely wound" is still there however... so I believe that my springs are linear.

This is a good thing. I suppose I DID get the right springs after all! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>
