local nissan dealer said they were going to charge me 45 bucks to do a diagnostic, so i said "screw you guys, i'm going home" anyway, is there a way to check the code from the check engine light other than an OBD-II computer? thanks in advance

Just for fun, wiggle your o2 sensor and see if it goes out... I did that, it went away for a day, I knew it was the sensor... 200$ to fix that though.

There isn't a way to connect a laptop to the ECU is there?

96 Nissans and above lost the little LED lights that blinked to tell you what the problem was. Haynes manuals have all the blinking codes. I think you're going to have to pay the 45 bucks. I ended up paying 40 to get mine checked. Turned out to be a fuel temp sensor. If you act like you know what you're doing, they'll usually just charge you for the initial check, and then when you fix what's wrong, bring it back in and they probably will let you go without paying the fee. Tell them you just want to double check.

I believe that's when all vehicles got outfitted with OBD II.

you can check the ecu by turning the dial counter clockwise for 2 seconds then back to original position and the check engine light will blink the code for you. i used to do that on my 99 se-r but i know worka t the dealer

but for 45 thats pretty cheap we charge 79.50 and you dont pay the inspection fee if you do whats wrong with your car.

i've done a diagnostic when i worked at a dealership, this process takes no more than 5 minutes, so anything besides free is a rip off if you ask me, especially since they rape you in the ass with labor charges that are billed by the book instead of the actual time it takes to do the job
