Now IMO Jack Nicholson was THE great villian in movie history as the Joker. And when I heard that Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker for the next Batman, I was disappointed to say the least. HOWEVER, now that I see THIS:
http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/790/790237/the-dark-knight-20070521072926061.jpg
Holy crap he looks like a total nutball! It's a lot darker look for the series, but I must admit he looks great. Now let's hope he can nail the insaneness of the Joker.

he does look crazy in the pic, i would never have guessed that is him. jack was the man as the joker, if heath can do 1/2 as well it should be good. But than again, jack looks evil/crazy with no makeup.......
Heath needs a good movie to redeem himself after "brothers grimm"

Looks dumb I'm a huge fan of batman when I was a kid, the older movies kicked ass. The new one sucked, and if heath ledger is playing the joker then what is the world coming to.

[See You In December]
Cmon Mel, you forgot that part!
The trailer is due out December.
Ledger does look pretty damn dark, and i gotta say, i love the direction.
Batman = Dark. Not Campy.
Although, the 60's Batman won my heart in terms of funny campiness.

Michelle Pfeiffer + Catwoman = Win
Fuck Heath Ledger. Mark Hamill should be the Joker.
He did the voice of Joker in Batman: The Animated Series, one of the best cartoons ever. We already know he's got the voice, slap some makeup on him and give us Jedi Joker.

Any of you guys seen the fan film, Batman: Dead End? It's basially Batman vs. Predator vs. Aliens. Corny concept I know, but the Joker in it, Andrew Koenig, is how I picture the character being played the best. If Heath can pull it off as insane as the guy in that short film did, then I might be able to forget he was in that movie with the "Mountain".
Andrew Koenig = My favorite Live action Joker so far.
Mark Hamil = The BEST Joker voice EVER! "Hello Batsy!"

I dunno, I don't think Heath is going to do such a great job.
As everyone stated Joker from the first film was great. But I am interested to see what this new film will offer. I felt the last Batman film "...begins" was not too bad. It pummeled all the Marvel offerings IMO.

There was another fan film that was about Dick Grayson (i think it was titled "Grayson, but i can't remember offhand). It was badass, he was married to Barbara Gordon, had Superman and other superhero cameos.

I think Ledger can pull it off.
I was very impressed with Batman begins. While the Tim Burton version was great in its own right, I definitely like the new Batman franchise better. I guess, for me, they just have the look and feel that the whole Batman concept evokes.
I just hope they keep going with what they started and don't fuck it up.
Batman: The Animated Series was one of the best animated shows I've ever seen. I wish they would make more cartoons like that these days.

The last Batman definately delivered. It was dark and started the franchise off fresh in a direction that didn't feel like BS. I always hated the OG Batman movie b/c it was too 80's and had that douchebag Michael Keaton as the Bat.

Really? Really? I think he was NUTS. The part where he shoots that guy in the office like 20 times in different positions, or when he gives that guy a hand shake and fries'em? IMO Jack was THE best comic book villain in movie history.

Granted, those two scenes were nice. But he just didn't have the level of intensity in his voice and actions.
The Joker in my eyes should be strung out and always on the verge of cracking. Jack is just too laid back of a guy to me."Wait'll they get a load of me" came out too smooth and not sinister.

he wasn't in the comics or the cartoons i believe....i think they just created him to throw another villain in this movie.....
there's also rumors that Freddy Prinze JR will be playing The Riddler in the next two installments....but to debunk that, there's also a rumor that the character that Anthony Michael Hall is playing in "The Dark Knight" eventually becomes The Riddler, which i think would be awesome...only problem is i thought the Riddler's real name was Edward Nigma.....

I'd Harley her Quinn...
I haven't heard anything about her character in the movie. Here's the whole cast list according to IMB.
Christian Bale ... Bruce Wayne / Batman
Michael Caine ... Alfred Pennyworth
Heath Ledger ... The Joker
Maggie Gyllenhaal ... Rachel Dawes
Gary Oldman ... Lt. James Gordon
Morgan Freeman ... Lucius Fox
Eric Roberts ... Salvatore Maroni
Aaron Eckhart ... Harvey Dent
Anthony Michael Hall ... Mike Engel
Monique Curnen ... Det. Ramirez
Nestor Carbonell ... Mayor
Joshua Harto ... Reese
Michael Jai White ... Gamble
Chucky Venice ... Gamble's Bodyguard

If you guys like Christian that much have any of you seen "The Machinist"? Talk about an amazing performance and dedication to the art. Also, "Harsh Times" and of course, "American Psycho" were also very good movies also. Hell, in "American Psycho" he seemed like a Bruce Wayne in that movie when he wasn't killing people and having narcissitic sex with hookers..
I absolutely loved Jack as the Joker just because of the cool factor. I can watch that performance over and over. Tim Burton did very well like you all have stated and I know we've established most of the opinions as the first two being infinitely better than the last two. I would just like to say that if this goes well it will only strengthen my admiration for CB and let me trust another director and be put on the very short list I have of directors I will support.

By the end of "Dark Knight" Joker ends up in Arkham Asylum. While there, he meets a young psychiatrist named Dr. Harleen Quinzel. She falls in love with him and helps him escape to become his partner in crime in a future sequel. "Don't worry Mr. J. We'll get that nasty old Bat. Right Puddin'?"
Please Hollywood, don't be stupid and kill Joker in this movie. Batman vs. Joker is the quintessential rivalry. It could go on forever.

some info that from the ign interview with nolan. full article here: http://movies.ign.com/articles/839/839933p1.html
IGN: Was Harvey Dent's transformation into Two-Face shot in IMAX?
Nolan: Gosh, I'm trying to remember ... We mixed in -- that depends on how you look at it. It's a hard one to answer, actually.
IGN: Judging from all the stills we've seen thus far, he hardly ever smiles. Do you think others have misinterpreted the character and thought he was supposed to be funny when he may actually be meant to be more ironic?
Nolan: There are different types of being funny. The sequence you've seen has a very dark sense of humor to it, I think. Very sardonic sense of humor to what he's doing and that's the way in which he's funny. And, yes, it's very easy to confuse that with a lot of smiling and a lot of laughing but what he does in the film is very difficult to capture in stills to be perfectly frank. It's one of the reasons we wanted to show this sequence as well, to get his introduction out there. It's the total package. It's the way he moves, the way he is, it's the way he inhabits the character. I'm just so excited by it. I think people will be really blown away by it.
IGN: How would you describe Joker's walk? It's not quite a limp. It's the first thing I noticed about the character. There's just something ... off.
Nolan: There's just a feel to it and you can't put your finger on it, and that's what I love about it. It's very original and very unique. It's a unique combination of elements. He would just blow me away every day on set. It was an incredible thing to watch.
IGN: And what about the decision to have Joker wear make-up rather than be altered by chemicals. Was it just easier from a storytelling perspective to have him wear make-up than to explain how chemicals changed him?
Nolan: Well, we never wanted to do an origin story for the Joker in this film. The arc of the story is much more Harvey Dent's; the Joker is presented as an absolute. It's a very thrilling element in the film, and a very important element, but we wanted to deal with the rise of the Joker not the origin of the Joker, if that makes sense.
IGN: So it's expected that the third film will focus more on Two-Face. Will it be a solo story for him or will there be another, secondary villain included in it?
Nolan: I wouldn't want to give away too much about this film, but the thing I will say, and I said it a lot about Batman Begins and it was genuinely the truth, is I don't think in terms of sequels. I think in terms of making this film the best film it can be and the most complete film it can be.

so what happened in the comics after bane broke batman's back?
Nice picture above. :)
That Knightfall storyline started off well, introducing Bane but I think it ended weakly.
Bruce is up in bed while Jean-Paul (Azrael) takes over. He develops a new suit and challenges Bane. He eventually wins out but Bruce recovers and attempts to take the mantle back. He uses some psychological stuff to make Jean-Paul "forget" he was Batman and things are "back to normal".
Though, I think the ending was rushed due to the intense dislike of someone other than Bruce Wayne holding the mantle of the bat. DC has to revamp everything and change the storyline with people showing backlash to this new storyline development.
I'm really starting to enjoy the Nightwing stories where Dick always envisioned he would be the next Batman but realized that no one could ever replace Bruce.
While I know the "Hush" storyline is my favorite (partially because its drawn by Jim Lee) I think the "Murderer" storyline is much better since it shows all of his relationships with his supporting cast (Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl/Oracle and even Spoiler) and that he's quite fallible as both Bruce Wayne and Batman.
Anyways, back to the important point -- the movie! Thanks to everyone who's posting pics of the film!!! I think Nolan's doing it right as no one ever dies in a Batman film --- Scarecrow got away and anyone who thinks Ras "died" should be kicked in the crotch for good measure. :bigok:
Having that collection of villians either in Arkham or around Gotham will always present a constance presence or need for the Dark Knight to protect Gotham.
If this is one series that goes on and on, its one I'll be glad to wait for year after year.
Though, does anyone think if its written well and done at its own pace -- it could develop into the next "007: Bond" type franchise --- movies made every so often with the character fighting off a particular villain (or group of villians)? Just something to consider. =)

For all of you anxiously browsing the internet seeking out an official trailer for The Dark Knight (http://www.canmag.com/movies.php?moviekey=darkknight), you'd be better off waiting until Monday. Warner Bros (http://www.canmag.com/nw/9921-dark-knight-official-trailer-release#). has confirmed that the recent trailer leak has not upped the release of the official version online (http://www.canmag.com/nw/9921-dark-knight-official-trailer-release#).
The Dark Knight Trailer Monday
TrailerAddict (http://www.traileraddict.com/trailer-news/8) has confirmed with Warner Bros. that the online trailer release for The Dark Knight will not arrive until after the weekend.
While the recent leak of a bootlegged trailer for The Dark Knight had some speculating that we'd have the official, hi-res version by the end of the day, our source at Warner Bros. has confirmed that the studio remains adamant about holding off on the trailer/sneak preview's official release.
The official trailer for The Dark Knight will appear online in multiple formats Monday, December 17th. Any updates before that is likely the bootleg.

from slashfilm.com:
Goyer talks batman
The screenwriter went on to say that the story was tweaked an tweaked again “because we really did not want to let down the fans. We had to figure out a way to top ourselves, and I think we have.”
What we know: The sequel will follow Batman as he enlists the aid of Gordon and Dent in “bringing down the Joker… but not killing him. In the third movie (http://www.slashfilm.com/2007/04/09/two-face-might-not-be-in-the-dark-knight/#), the Joker would go on trial, scarring Dent in the process,” screenwriter David Goyer previously revealed. So may-b e Dent won’t transform into Two-Face in the second film.
:aw:
even though it may be old news, just wanted to post it. some people know, some dont. so no two-face (only dent) in the dark knight. which is not surprising considering the footage from the offical trailer. some thought it would be both joker and two-face in the movie. i'm VERY happy about this. more time to focus on the joker (deserves it, obviously).

FUCK their Joker. I know they were going for the "dark" look, but ...that's not the Joker.
Batman was awesome, but they totally undersold the most appealing aspect of Batman: he's a detective. He'll outthink and outprepare you and he'll crush you with stone cold logic, funded by Wayne Enterprises tech and resources.
This Batman is still too "action hero"...they've taken the darkness and angst, and visually its all good...but that's not batman. That's just a horde of other random wannabes.
The Joker is a worthy villain because he's the detective's worst nightmare: he's viscious, but ultimately completely insane. You can't predict it; he doesn't kill in a pattern, he doesn't even necessarily choose the most efficient way to kill the most people for least effort. He just does it for the hell of it, mostly.
The Joker's not a physical threat. In a straight up fight, most people , including regular cops could just crush him. The Joker wins, however, by lulling you into a false sense of security- you think h e's just a nut. But he'd probably bite your finger off or claw out ur eye, then stand there laughing at you. He's not some knife-wielding, gun-totting badass.
Thats my early take. Good for Hollywood, but ultimately...short of the real thing.
If it's not written by Frank Miller or Jeph Loeb and penned by Tim Sale, it's garbage.
DRavenS13

They have centered around Batman's origins, so they are going to focus more on Bruce getting the hang of being Batman. He is a detective, but he is also a chemist and has a horde of military-style weapons he's trying to get the hang of. This is why they chose someone that looked a little younger, same for the Joker. They've embraced the idea of making Batman something relatable to real life. He's not gonna run in and automatically know how to be a detective, and know how to be Batman. In this time in the comic world, he's pretty old. He didn't start to be Batman till his 30s. They've focused on Bruce coming into being Batman.
I think they nailed it pretty good with the Joker. He's not a practical jokes and tricks- there is no rhyme or reason to his insanity, he doesn't give a shit. He doesn't even care about his own life. They made him darker, edgier, more realistically insane. I'll admit I had my doubts on Heath Ledger being Batman, especially coming off that ghey ass Brokeback shit. But after seeing stills, and ESPECIALLY after having seen the preview, he's gonna be pretty awesome.
And to correct the above-stated, he has used firearms and weapons. He has trick guns- sometimes real, sometimes not. In The Killing Joke, he beat Jason Todd to death with a pipe or something like that. He is a physical threat because he's likely to have booby-trapped himself- again a sign that he shows no regard to his own self-preservation. He is also a chemist, which is how he developed the Joker-fish. His insanity is a dangerous one.
Chris Nolan has yet to let me down, and I don't think he's gonna start now.
OptionZero
12-18-2007, 02:37 AM
The joker has used weapons, sure, but he has never demonstrated any proficiency with them, nor are they an essential element of his character. He's certainly not "knife wielding joker".
If he uses a knife it's cuz he happens to have a knife, or it's lying nearby.
I love Chris Nolan, but they've essentially lopped off one aspect of Batman that makes Batman Batman.
I want prep-time Batman.

batman's still young and starting out, as Nolan and Goyer have mentioned several times. He's still fresh/getting the hang of things.
heres a couple of points from mtv.com that i thought were good. full article here - http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1576589/story.jhtml
-1:20: "Wadda we got?" an unnamed police man asks Gordon. "Nothing," he responds. "No name. No other alias. Clothing is custom. Nothing in his pocket but knives and lint." The Joker is one of the most iconic villains of all time, but by way of a second character introduction, they don't get much better than this. By pointing out what the Joker doesn't have, we again see how he exists outside of society's rules. No name. No wallet. No identification. No store-bought clothing. No phone or money. Absolutely nothing that could tie him to the world at large. Horrifying.
-1:13: Shot of the Joker's knives. There appear to be too many for one man to fit on his person.
-1:11: The trailer's first money shot: our first in-film look at how Nolan and team have realized the Joker's makeup. "Evening, Commissioner," he sneers. (As far as we know, Gordon is not the commissioner yet in the Batman universe. He was a lieutenant at the end of "Begins.") The "realistic" makeup is chilling, not the least of all because of Ledger's "Glasgow Smile." (His lips and cheeks are cut horizontally to give a scarring appearance of a a smile.)
-1:04: The Joker grabs a man's face and screams his early catchphrase: "Why so serious?!" Paradoxically, what's interesting about this brief scene isn't what the Joker says, but to whom the Joker says it. He appears to be grabbing the head of a black man. There's a possibility it's Michael Jai White, who is playing a mob boss named Gamble (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2007/07/03/spawn-star-takes-a-gamble-on-dark-knight-role/). More tantalizing, however, is the possibility that it is Colin McFarlane, who played Commissioner Loeb in "Begins." Could it be that the Joker is about to execute the chief of police, paving the way for Gordon to rise to the top? We think so.
****-0:57: The Joker fires a bazooka into the city. A brief moment, this is yet another deft character touch from Nolan and Ledger. Notice how clumsily the Joker handles the weapon. This is because the character, at heart, is something of a gentleman criminal. The most "personal" way to kill someone, after all, is by stabbing them. That doesn't mean that he won't use whatever's most readily available and likely to cause the most damage.****
0:42: The Joker, with a machine gun (again notice how awkwardly he holds the weapon), enters a fundraiser, where he immediately moves toward Dawes to hold her hostage. This is the first point in the trailer where it becomes obvious what we don't see: namely, District Attorney Harvey Dent. [Editor's note: Upon further inspection, we've noticed that Dent (Aaron Eckhart) does in fact appear for an instant in this scene.]
-0:39: Rachel knees the Joker. "A little fight in you," he says. "I like that." Pay careful attention to the way Ledger smacks his lips. It would be terrifying enough if he just wanted to kill her, but he seems to want something more. This could be a plot point in the film.

The casting was definitely off in those movies. I was definitely let down with spiderman 3. X-men was meh, except for wolverine who I think Jackman pulled off nicely. Either way, I am excited to see so many graphic novel movies being made. So many great plots, characters, and story lines to use. Good or bad at least they aren't all remakes.

That may be the case but I love the two Tim Burton films, compared to the Christopher Reeves Superman films of the time were so edgy and awesome. Still think Devito's Penguin is definitive. But I must admit that the films haven't aged very gracefully.
i still maintain they should have hauled mark hamill out of whatever bar he's staying at these days and made him play joker

Yeah, Hamil had the voice down pat. But I gotta say the maniac laugh in the new trailers is pretty dead on.
I think these last two films are doing a good job of capturing the essence of the 'Year Zero' stories.

i read that the scene (trailer #2) where batman is racing towards the joker in the batpod down the street..... the one where joker yells "come on.... hit me". is a nod towards Burton and Nicholson. like the original where the batwing is flying towards the joker down the street.

Are you all talking about this preview?:
http://www.atasteforthetheatrical.com/deathtrap/default.htm
Heath will be an INCREDIBLE Joker! He will play the character that was intended from the creator of the Dark Knight. Not to knock Jack Nicholson but his character was generated from the late 50's thru the 60's Joker that was more of a funny trickster that killed when needed. However, the Joker was a man gone absolutely insane. He kills for enjoyment, for pleasure. He torments Batman because of his unwillingness to kill criminals.
IMO Heath seems to have to insane laugh down. Cant wait!!!! WOOT!

Couldn't have said it better myself.. Heath was known for loving his art and being very shy about having interviews. He was a purist at that and after reading more about him since his death I learned alot about him. Alot of girls I knew just liked him because he was cute/hot/dreamy whatever, and the guys said he was gay for doing brokeback. I started liking Christian Bale when I saw the Machinist because of the amount of dedication he had in doing such a film. I'm glad I got to see most of his movies. Unfortunately I can't say the same for Heath. I will however start to go back and check out his library just to see firsthand his talent.

I am truly sad for this guy. I never saw Brokeback Mountain (thank God), but I've seen him in all his other movies and he was a truly spectacular actor. I have a lot of faith in his role as the Joker, even though I didn't initially.
His daughter's gonna live off the money he makes from The Dark Knight.
By the way, did anyone get the thought of, "Why didn't he do this shit when he was filming Brokeback???".... I know, I know, it's bad, but I couldn't help thinking it....
because he didnt have nightmares about the joker during brokeback lol
He couldnt sleep because he wasnt basically hunted by the joker, had nightmares about him. Got about a few hours of sleep every night.

from superheroflix.com:
Fans have been waiting for the next trailer for The Dark Knight (http://www.superheroflix.com/movies/film/81/4381/summary.php) almost since the moment the first one was released. Then, with Heath Ledger's unexpected death, everyone began to wonder whether or not the next trailer would feature the Australian star. Now, IGN.com (http://movies.ign.com/articles/853/853359p1.html) reports that the next trailer will air with Warner Bros' prehistoric epic 10,000 B.C. (http://www.superheroflix.com/movies/film/12/3912/summary.php).
According to the report, this trailer will feature less of the Joker, and pay more attention to Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) and Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart).
Christopher Nolan, who directed The Dark Knight (http://www.superheroflix.com/movies/film/81/4381/summary.php), has said before that while the Joker is important to the film, the main story arc really focuses on District Attorney Harvey Dent, who will eventually become the villainous Two-Face.
The Dark Knight (http://www.superheroflix.com/movies/film/81/4381/summary.php) opens on July 18, 2008, and stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart and Maggie Gylenhall.
AND..................... from comics2film.com:
An online resume for actress Sarah Jayne Dunn lists the her most recent credit as appearing in 'The Dark Knight'. What's surprising though, is Dunn is credited as playing "Harley Quinn" in Christopher Nolan's Batman sequel.
Fans know that Quinn is, the Joker's girlfriend, a character created for the Paul Dini/Bruce Timm animated 'Batman', series. In short order she became one of the most sensational Batman rogues, taking a place among his top tier of villains. Eventually the character transitioned into Batman canon, appearing in the comics as well as other spin offs, like the ill-fated 'Birds of Prey' TV series.
Fans will have to wait and see if Quinn appears in full harlequin gear and makeup in the movie, or is a bit player in Joker's army, waiting to explode into the next sequel.
Dunn is largely known for her work on British television.

It's ironic how some things end up being. Like this thread, for instance. It was meant to highlight, critique, and praise the talents of Mr. Ledger. I'm sure the OP, or anyone for that matter, didn't expect these series of unfortunate events to happen. It just goes to show you how fragile our lives are. One day you're anticipating how good the next generation Joker will be, next day you're looking at headlines thinking to yourself, "this is a joke, right? This must be wrong.."
I'm looking forward to seeing Heath Ledger's final piece of work.
RIP Heath Ledger

Meh- I think Brittany Murphy would have been better. She has the voice, and the demeanor for it.

Yea I don't like that chick as Quinn. I don't see the next movie already being cast. That movie would be 2+ years off at LEAST.

Jack Nicholson was a damn good joker and i'm not sure if Heath Ledger can top it. Jack doesn't really have to try too hard to look scary, he had a good evil Joker Laugh too...then again the old batman was very dark and Gothic, I really wish they would have made these new ones more like the first ones. Don't get me wrong, I think the new ones are really good, I just really like the whole feel of the old ones with Michael Keaton.

just a quick update:
The Dark Knight Trailer News
The good people at Joblo (http://www.joblo.com/nycc-tdk-trailer) have posted a detailed report on what was to be seen from The Dark Knight at NYCC.
- Heath Ledger, as we surmised, appears to be giving a truly remarkable performance. While this trailer replays some of the same things we've seen in the teaser, the new snippets of The Joker's dialogue and mannerisms produced a seriously giddy effect for anyone excited about this potentially amazing performance. My favorite moment is when he approaches Rachel after he and his gang bust in on a fancy dinner party (this can be seen briefly in the first teaser) - he does a funny little gesture where he brushes back his hair, mock-grooming himself. Don't know why, but it just looked great, and another indication that Ledger has totally disappeared into this psychotic character... Another nice scene had him giving a speech to a roomful of mobsters/bad guys about killing Batman. He ends it by pulling out a joker, saying "Here's my card" with that weirdly-pitched voice of his. He also really seems to like his knives...
So - When can we expect to see it ourselves? Well, it has been rumored that we have a couple weeks to go. A couple weeks? Let's do some math, shall we?
In exactly two weeks we have the release of Iron Man (http://www.canmag.com/movies.php?moviekey=ironman). Who wants to bet that the TDK trailer arrives with that?
Mel......... maybe change the thread title to the dark knight? might as well. all the info's in here.
