View Full Version : Fender's Rolled vs Shaved
Rob's S14

just lookin for some opinions here. i've got a 98 s14 and my rear tires are rubbing so i'm prob gonna have to do one or the other. i've heard a couple things about each like shaving is better because your paint won't chip or crack. also heard that rolling is better because you don't risk the body rusting. what do you guys think? is there even a difference. by the way the car still has factory paint, if that makes a difference.
thanks

cutting the fenders on a nissan is super retarded because the fenders are glued together. people can do it on toyotas because the fenders are welded together but on our cars if you cut too deep your fenders will come apart and be all ghetto. tap the lip up with a hammer real slow you wont fuck anything up unless you super suck.

my buddies did some insane rolls without damaging the paint. like dude its so easy that you can do it with a freaking bat.
cutting shit up is never the way to go in my opinion

+1 for rolling.
Worst case, a little chipped paint...better than cutting stuff up!!!

Roll your fenders! MAX has a fender roller up in the advertisers specials section. Check it out, for 200 bucks you cant beat it! A shop will charge you about 50 bucks a fender. so if you buy it and do it yourself ittl be the same price as if you have a shop do it. However, im sure you have friends that need their fenders rolled also. so charge a lil renters fee, done!

Shaving a fender weakens it structurally since the lip reinforces the span across the wheel well. In the rear, the lip also is used to spot weld the layers together, cutting it off opens the cavity between the layers allowing for water intrusion.
In other words, it's a stupid idea.

when you guys say chipped paint, do you mean on the inside on the lip or on the outside. whenever i roll/pull fenders, the inside lips paint cracks/peels off everytime. you just grab some masking tape and black paint and paint where you chipped off paint to prevent rusting. if you guys are chipping the paint on the outside on a normal roll job, you must really suck at life

^^^ no one cares about paint chipping on the inside, but yeah, masking it off and spraying something in there is a good idea for anti-corrosion. Paint chipping on the outside sucks, but happens sometimes, if you go too fast on one side - heating up the paint helps, but as said above, is not completely necessary. Don't shave your fenders.

I did mine with a bat, the paint cracked on the bottom of the lip, who cares. I need bigger spacers up front. :(

Use a heatgun, I've never cracked or chipped paint when doing a roll job.

What he said. I actually prefer using a torch though, because you can see the flame, so you can see how much heat you're gettin in the fender.
Search for threads started by me, I did a write up on rolling in Tech Talk some time back.
EDIT: Cause I'm in a good mood

what about cutting the fenders up front? are those glued together also?

Why would you want to cut the front fenders?
A good roll will yield just as much clearnace, and the folded lip is easier on the tire then a sharp edge from where it has been cut, should you happen to rub while turning.

Plus front fenders are flimsy enough as it is. Easy to roll. Roll the fronts. Let's make this simple. This applies to all S-chassis stock metal fenders.
ROLL!!!
DO NOT CUT!!!
How-to link can be found a few posts up.

Doesn't look the best, but who cares. It works. I'll clean it up later, before it gets painted.

i rub everywhere. the harness comes out of the firwall at full lock, the front fenders, haha yea 60 series need to go. but i guess ill just roll. i figured cutting the lip up front then doing a slip pull would eliminate any wheel rub but soon ill have 50 series so i should be fine.

Id cut/grind the front, not like your gonna be doing any damage doing that. Only thing is that if you cut the lip and you have to do a pull on those fenders, itll be weaker and I dont see it holding a pull. So up to you.

yea, just roll it with a bat. my dad has a wheel shop and we've done it for years. all you have to do is get a friend and a wood bat. if your car is not lowered then you might need a couple of jelly belly friends to bring the car lower when you do it. have you or your friend put the bat in the wheel wheal at the end and drive the car slowly forward and at the same time have your friend push down and roll the bat forward with the car , do the same thing in reverse, repeat this till its rolled to your desire. I've found that the slower you go the less chances of cracking or chipping your paint. sorry for such a long comment , but there it is...

+1 for max or eastwood fender roller

baseball bat methods been tried and true for YEARS by the musclecar fellas back in the day. my mom actually did it to her cars in the 70s and 80s (shes not your average mom - shes the real deal tho - bandana around her head like shes going to a lynard skynard concert everyday)

I hammered the inside of my front fenders and turned them into wide fenders, haha.

Heat Gun

why use a heat gun? i did both of my 240's with a crowbar and no heat and they turned out fine.

crow bar really?? to beat the fronts or for the rear... interesting

whatever you decide to do, use heat. getting a good pull/roll without heat is not advised. you'll not only crack paint, but the roll wont penetrate as smoothly.
best situation if possible, it so say FUCK YOU to the paint.. roll the rears and then repaint them anyway.
the front is flimsy, you cannot really get a good roll with them. anyone expecting to fit huge wheel setup in the front must look for an alternative, not rolling.. because that will only give you minor.. and i mean minor increase in clearance.
the rear, do not cut unless you go wide-body. the front, you can cut but why.. its already swiss cheese. like i said, if you need more in the front.. get widebody.

Front you can take the fenders off, and then beat on the lip with a fender with the fender on the ground.
works great.
