Anybody have a clue why people would go around stealing cats off of parked vans and trucks (MVP and 4runner)?

yeah bro. stolen cats. My neighbor got his cat stolen off his 4runner about a month ago. And some dude got his stolen while he was parked at an Applebees. Why? Who knows? What the hell are they made of?

They are made of platinum on the inside. 240 cats have a pretty high content. But from what I understand its illegal to try and get the material from them but somehow people do it.

You can sell them to people that resale them and there's that steal it to sale it recycler's that use it for filters. I would always save all the one's I would take off the cars that wouldnt pass smog and sell them for $25.00 each. So maybe a crackhead found out and is looking to make some fix cash.

Wow, I didn't know they had valuable material in them. Glad I didn't throw mine away when I pulled it off.

They are selling for big money on ebay. I wish I had about 20 240 cats. They go for around $80 on a good day.

Interesting story: i have a friend who brought his car to TJ for bodywork. Went down there to check up on the progress, started her up, loud as fuck. They stole his cat. He complained and they agreed to pay for a replacement. Went down to drop off the replacement cat, only to have it stolen the next day. So now he's planning to put a test pipe on it at least till it gets back across the border.

Thats funny! I had Civic stolen in TJ, TWICE (the same one). Second time it came back a different color with no alternator or distributor. At least we got it back.

My dad ran across a guy who did 48months for stealing catalytic converters. He stole somewhere between $140-150k dollars worth. Low and behold, he was a crackhead. Blatantly said thats what the money was used for.

For a second I thought you guys were getting your cats (you know, felines) stolen from random places around town. I was thinking "Why the hell are you guys taking your cats to Applebees???" mRclARK1's hilarious cat pictures threw me off.

There's a place over here that buys up cats, 240 ones go for around $80. That's why all of the cars at junkyards always have the cats cut out, the junkyards sell them for profit.

Yeh its illegal for a junkyard to sell a cat to someone who wants to put it on their car. But they can do the recycle thing and still make bank. Why not steal them, how much is a cat for a four runner brand new? like $150? pay a crackhead $25 and you probably get one that passes smog... Not that I would do that, lol.

No, but it is illegal to modify the emissions equipment on a vehicle intended for street use.

The assumption here is that the car the cat. coverter came from a car that is no longer being driven . . .

how much precious metal could be in the cat to make it valuable...

and wow...evidently rhodium, which can be found in cats goes for about 6 grand an ounce, where as platinum goes for 1200 an ounce

i was confused up until the 6 or 7th post about cat vs. catalytic converter as well lol

I doubt they are harvesting the platinum out of the cats, that would take too much chemistry knowledge for anyone who makes their living stealing. They probably just sell them because new cats are expensive (due to the platinum content). On the 240, they're pretty cheap, but years ago my wife had to replace one of the cats on her Taurus, and the part cost $350 or so by itself.

Nope. They are indeed being melted down for the precious metals inside.

this happend to my friends mom she has a 4runner they took the cat while she was working at a school. she went to get a new one and they told her it would cost $700 bucks, suposedly the o2 sensor is what makes it pricey. Shes running a straight pipe now though.

we are getting on average 100$ for import cats when we recycle them.
newer hondas,BMW,Benz and luxuroy car cats can get you 150 and up.

we sell ours to a used battery spot in the ghetto. i have seen F150's pull up to his shop with the bed filled to the top with cats worth thousands and he pays out cash. You would never suspect the place to have that much cash laying around on a daily basis.

to clarify my post from over a year ago, I meant the thieves themselves are not likely to be harvesting the platinum. Yes, the recyclers are, but the thieves are just selling the cats to the recyclers.

Why not steal them, how much is a cat for a four runner brand new? like $150?

Most of the time , they cut the cat off, thus making the down pipe and the cat-back section useless. A OEM cat from Toyota is roughly $850-900, plus the cat-back and down pipe. All-in-all, it makes it become about a $1200-1400 bill for insurances (granted you have theft coverage). I'm not complaining, Toyota pays me 1.5 hours to replace those parts and its good ol' gravy work :D I see these things on a weekly basis.
