View Full Version : OT: Getting Fired

the company i work for is somewhat new, and we've been working out all of the kinks and all, trying new processes of working. we're finally doing good, and making good profit, but lately people are getting fired left and right. they say they can't afford overtime for our department, they fired one guy already, took away the part time people, and they want us to work harder somehow to make up for it. the hardest worker in another department i used to work in, got fired, and she just had a child.

i took a vacation day today (and next monday for ozzfest! but i just got an email from my friend ann at work saying two bosses got fired. one boss JUST bought a nissan sentra vspec II or whatever, the highest model, and the girl is young and has a family. my company has no mercy when firing people obviously.

i'm fuckin' stressed. i just bought a new car and paid sales tax and 6 months insurance, and i may be next to go. if it weren't for one guy switching to part time, i would have been let go two weeks ago. and the big bosses never tell us what's going on.

i've never had to deal with this before and i don't know what to do. this is the first job that i've loved and wanted to stay at for a long time, and now i may get fired for no reason.

the amount of money i've put into this blazer with the first payment and tax, and the power programmer, i probably could have bought an S14 front clip for my car and i would have no problem being fired. i'd say screw you guys, i can work anywhere and afford insurance on a 1990 240SX. (with an s14 SR, but the insurance company doesn't need to know about that)

but i bought this blazer because i thought i'd be there a while and now all that money may go down the drain if i have to sell it.

but if you'd like, ignore me, i'm venting because i'm sure my friend's don't want me to wake them up on a monday night hearing me complain. hah.

Hey james... this is something you should just not worry about but take very serious. I would say if you really like your job then you need to look at the skills that it requires. Do you have them all? Are you the best in your group? Is there anything you can do to make you more valuble in your position? Theres a good and bad at being the best in your position(dosnt matter what job). If your the best then most likly your the highest paid... which means your usually the second on the list to go after all the part timers and people that are writen up. Are they giving out severance(sp?) packages to the people they let go? Remember they cannot just up and fire you for no reason.. its called a lawsuit so they have to pay you to leave if they cannot afford to keep you on. So if you got skill you should be able to obtain a new job within two weeks or something related to your field.
This is how the corporate world works and its going to get a lot hard with all the companys now trying to save every penny.
If you get laid off dont freak. Just take day and either go drive around or spend it with someone you enjoy being with(relax). Next day get serious and look for a new job which shouldnt be to hard if you have mad skill. If you got a compensation package from the last company this should pay your bills for the next month or two.. dont spend on your car either
Good luck

If worst comes to worst, you could always unload that money hole of an S13 you got there.

The best thing to do is to start looking for annother job now. You're more attractive to hierers if you currently have a job. The job market kinda sucks out there right now. It's been worse, but it's been a lot better.

I'd make sure you have all your interview materials together. Update your resume, cover letter, etc and start asking around about a new job with friends and contacts. Basically if you're prepared it will never happen to you.

My girlfriend worked in a new store that was finally getting off the ground, customer base was continually growing but the owners (two lawyers) just didn't have much business sense. Employee turnover was ridiculously high, people would be let go, sometimes to be re-hired a few weeks or a month later. It was a great store, but a horrible place to work, even if you enjoyed the job. She found the letter at the printer on wednesday that she was getting let go, so she called the temp agency she was at previously that night and on thursday finished up everything and asked to meet with her boss to tell her she knew and wasn't going to bother coming in on friday

It's a tough market, sorry to here about your situation. It all works out in the end.

Well If you like me you will throw a hissy fit in the parking lot. Most likly do the biggest burnout possible. Thats a bad idea. I burnt off my tires and let me tell you, 285/35/18 rear tires are not cheap! Well just start doing what EVERYONE posted. Just do it in a good order. Cause there isn't that much to steal after you burn down the building. So just start looking now. It won't hurt anything to have a few contingecy plans setup just in case. I hope you don't get laid off because you like your job. Those are hard to find now a days. Well Good Luck.

Edit: Go watch "Office Space" and go now!

Sorry to hear 'bout that man. Just wondering, are you getting paid relatively high compared to everyone else? Usually the first ones to go are the people who are getting paid a lot, so if you're down low, you have less to worry about.... Also, start polishing up your resume and cover letter. You can always start looking now, and at least get an offer, so if you get laid off, then you'll have a job waiting... If you don't, then just turn down the offer. Good luck!

Annoying Eric: i'm going to save every penny for now on. i wanted to fix up my car some more, but now it has to wait. it sucks having to borrow money to pay bills when you have no job. i'll never do it again.

DSC & KiDyNomiTe: if they move me down to storage B and take my swingline stapler, i might have to! (disclaimer: if the managers at work are seeing this, it's a joke. watch the movie office space). don't want to somehow get framed if i come to work and the building is ablaze.

sil80: thanks for the advice. i'm going to think about all that. they just got rid of the part timers and the people that were written up a lot. but i think i can get unemployment for up to 3 months. hopefully i'm not out of a job that long.

240 2NR: that's about how this place is, except the re-hiring part. i think the managers don't have the managing skills (how silly does that sound). it's strange how a couple so small can actually downsize!

pornallstar: i did that when i walked out of an oil changing shop. threw a fit in front of the customers. jumped in the 240SX and did a couple burnouts out of the parking lot then in front of the building, just in case anyone didn't see it the first couple times that was back in 1999.

jyt747: i'm going to make a resume and look into another job, (hopefully go to a tech school soon). i get paid more than most of the people, besides the managers. not that i'm rich and i make more than anyone here, i'm sure there are a lot of hard workers with more skill. but in my company, i do. i guess it makes me stand out more huh?

thanks for the for all the replies. people say i should sell my 240SX. but i don't think i could do it. the blazer doesn't mean much to me, but my 240SX is mah baby. it's not worth anything anyway selling the 240 would allow me to keep my blazer another 2-3 months. but i don't want to think about that, i'd rather keep both and fix up the 240SX.
