View Full Version : Lowered car = F***ed up suspension?

So i went to go get an alignment today for my car and the guy starts telling me that my car is too low. He says that it needs to be raised like an inch or more and that my suspension is fucked up. I'm thinking, my car isnt even that low, and im only on 16's with a 55 profile tire. Then they say that my car must handle like shit and that it must hop around everywhere. He says that the suspension geometry is all messed up and he keeps going on and on about how a lowered car doesnt handle. And then he goes by saying that he can pass up any lowered car in a turn in a stock height vehicle. The whole time Im just thinking this guy is full of shit, and he says that the front of my suspension is unfixable because its too low. And that I need new tie rod ends and that, that might not even fix it.
All I wanted was for my car to go straight, and all I got was this really long lecture. And no alignment. Has anybody else gotten the same problem before? Where do you guys get your alignments done?

have you tried taking it somewhere else for a second opinion?

1) he was talking suspension low, not chassis low. tires don't matter
2) you do fuck up the origonal suspension geometry slamming the car
3) you probably did blow your front tie rods, shit happens
4) if you are going to drive a slammed car, do alittle research first. The tech was correct in pretty much everything he said in a way.

What the guy told you is true 90% true. He can't align your car properly with a messed up direction. He just CAN'T because you'll pay to get nothing. A lowered car (more than 2" I should say for a 240) will get you loose handling. If you got camber, the handling will be like shit.

first of all if you lower you car you have more of a better of center of gravity. you can turn a little better. but the fact is that if you have lowered your car your suspension geometry is changed. which is almost not as good as stock. when you lowered your car you might of messed up your tie rod.
you do need a little suspension upgrade to make it the same again as stock but you'll have way better cornering ability than stock.
that guy is somewhat right. but with aftermarket suspension upgrades you'll turn better than stock.

05-10-2007, 08:20 PM
first of all, what suspension are you using?
karl wasabi
05-10-2007, 08:24 PM
Well my car isnt even slammed. I just lowerd it to the point that it looks pretty good. I have JIC coils, tension rods, and rear camber arms. The only thing I reallly dont have is the front tie rod ends. Havent gotten a second opinion yet, cause everywhere is closed by now. I even read on this forum that stock tie rods work fine on a lowered car. So what is the verdict.

05-10-2007, 08:26 PM
you need adjustable arms so your toe wont be messed up as long with your camber, I dont know about front caster and everything
240trainee
05-10-2007, 08:32 PM
His front caster should be fine, he has tension rods anyway.
Toe is already adjustable in the front, just might need new outer ends, but you can get it to 0 toe no problem
rear, you might not be able to get toe where you want it, but camber will be adjustable.
He just doesn't want to touch it, you have a different idea of what you want out of the car than he does. Go find someone else who gets what you are trying to do better.

The thing is. This is a tuner shop. There were two fixed up FD's and three more fixed up S14's. They tune drift cars at this shop. I think the dude was just trying to be a jackass.

eh, if your car drives fairly straight w/o touching the steering wheel you dont need an alignment. Your alignment ends up getting changed the second you leave the shop and drive over a couple of bumps

I kinda doubt he was trying to be a jackass.
If theres no possible way to align your car properly he is going to let you know. If he works for a reputable shop, and is a good employee, he's not going to lie to you. Mainly because their name would be all over that alignment job if it was fucked up.
Your tie rods COULD be fucked up, did you check them out for yourself? You could try to take it to another shop if you want. see what they tell you.

ugh.
anytime a alignment tech or tire jockey starts busting my balls about tire wear or tire is too small or too low or whatever i shit on their face.
They're all lazy stupid highschool dropouts and they'll give you all kinds of shit because you're not driving a minivan with 75 sidewall tires.
favorites include.
"last time we had a three peice wheel we broke it"
"you broke it?"
"yeah, racing rims break easy"
"ah, you guys must suck at putting tires on."
"we can't do 40 sidewalls"
"oh, this is a really soft sidewall, its only a 711 it goes on easy"
"no it doesn't I've done plenty"
"can I do it myself and give you 20$?"
"no way, you don't know how to work the machine"
"Im not the one that can't get 40 sidewalls on you old douchebag"
both of those, real events.
luckily I have an alignment guy that doesn't bust my balls. but the other retards always come try and bust my balls about tire wear.
"3.5 camber, who wanted that?"
"me"
"thats gonna eat tires"
"its toe that eats tires, breh"

I fucking hate mechanics, 99.9% of them are the dumbest asshats on the planet trying to jerk it off on minivan tire because they take 10 seconds to install and stretching tire takes 1 minute.

you're an idiot...
bring your car to my work, i'll give you a few degree's of toe and i'll make sure it drives straight and you tell me that you don't need an alignment after you see what your tires look like after a week or so of just driving around town.
and I dunno about you but if i'm just daily driving my car, my alignment doesn't go out...do you/your alignment guy leave the nuts loose on your arms? If you go do some events and drive like a jackass on the way home and aim for every pot hole and smack all the curbs in the parking lots then yea it will be out, but that shit isn't going out when you drive over a few small bumps.
my old civic I did the alignment on it and then drove 4 track days on it and then daily drove it for a year and the alignment was still dead on...so please don't speak if you don't know what you are talking about.

So fucking true... I had some douchebag give me the same lecture on my Scepter when I wanted a hair over -3 camber in the front. So I was just like fuck that shit and took it to a different place.
Now the guy that does my suspension setup is the former head suspension engineer for the factory Porsche racing team. I wanted -3, he gave me -3.

thats nothing, i took my car in to get the frame straightened, get it back and i have super positive camber, a still messed up frame, and the car veers in the opposite direction from after the accident. needless to say, dont go to freeman auto frame and alignment on story road. i also tried to get my wheel alignment somewhere else and they asked me what my camber plates where. i'd say which shop it was but thats just too embarassing.
i'd have to agree with a few other people, if a drift car specialist says your tied rods are fucked, hey, maybe they are.

one time I ninja eyeballed my car and hopped in to go get it aligned.
ended up being straight 3 degrees toe in. fuck.
so 10 minutes later I pull into the NTB with an old set of ST115s screaming for mercy, like 240 degree tread temp and try to cash in on my one year alignment.
"hey, I need an alingment and I'd like it to my own specs"
"we can't do your specs"
"uhhh ok, I can't make it across town man, it has like 3 degrees in from a crap eyeball just set the toe to factory."
*walks off, comes back with tech, walks off*
"the tech doesn't want to work on your car because it has racing suspension parts and he doesn't want to work on them"
"well, I can't make it across town, can I borrow a 15/16s and 7/8ths?"
"no way man"
had to bomb it another 20 minutes across town. shit was so shady.
then the one I took it to spent like 10 minutes freespinning an SPL tie rod buckle with both sides loose wondering why the toe wasn't changing before he asked me how to do it.
I fucking hate techs, takes so much effort to find a good tech willing to take the time that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
another pro tip is the crapbox mexican tire places always do the best job for tires. They're cheap as hell, they don't fuck up your wheels since they think they're cool and they'll always get the tire on. They're also really fast since they'd rather work on something cool than minivan bullshits.
as you can see, I've got a alot to say about highschool dropouts working on my shit.

LOL.... MRP's stories are crackin' me up, and fairly similar to what i've seen. I hate it when an allignment douche tells me
1. Dude, you must not like your tires with that camber(i asked for a whopping 2.4 in front, 1.8 in back). I didn't feel like explaining to a 35yr old tech about how toe eats rubber, so i just told him "to my specs".
2. Uhhh, that will be 20 bucks more per adjustable thing.

There is only one place in town that didn't tell me my car was too low, or my wheels were too big. I had people tell me they were legit and did good work. So I figured I'd let them do my allignment. Went to pick up the car, and sure enough, allignment looks straight and drives damn near perfect.
3 days later the rear of my car is tracking to the right and I start hearing a grinding noise. I pull over to investigate. They neveer tightened down my KTS arms after the allignment. The inside of the passenger side rear wheel is rubbing on the A-Arm. :rant2: Adjust and tighten as best I ould by hand. Limp the car home. Re-allign with a tape measure and my calibrated eye-ball. Car drives better then it did after their initial allignment.

Thats not as bad as this shop near my house. I took my car to them once. I had just lowered my car with 1.8" all around and I have front aero. Its really not that much lower than before with the stock front with lip. I walk into the tech, and tell him I need an alignment. He starts to give me crap about my car being low and the lasers wont be able to see each other. Then tells me that if the lasers can't see, he's still gonna charge me the full amount of $60 for an alignment for just putting it on the lift. Needless to say I was walking out of the shop swearing I would never come back.

Its a really cool shop.
I installed some tie rods and drove it there to get aligned. they did a good job considering i have no adjustability in the rear (other than stock). They didnt charge me full price since they said that it wasnt perfect. They told me to come back when i get some arms in the rear, so they could make it perfect.

my alignment shop is GREAT.
its called JUST TIRES, a very reputable shop that is filled with very knowledgeable individuals.
they have my car in the computer, with my contact information AND the vehicle's mileage - as to keep track of the car's usage history.
I deal with the oldest, crankiest bastard in the shop. he's always pissed off, smoking, and knows me by name. every time i visit, he knows exactly who i am, exactly what i want.. and doesnt fuck with the computer, its preset alignment settings, or the mileage history. actually, he doesnt even deal with the fucks in the office. i basically kick him down with a hand-shake of lets say, 40 bucks.. and we're fuckin done.
when old-school is not around, i deal with another character.. my main man theo. he's comedy, because he does crazy shit to his cars that i dont think anyone else typically does. he's gangster. only thing i dont like about theo is that he over-tightens shit, so i have to be careful what i let him touch. he's got the strong-hand, so many times my bitch-ass has a hard time loosening shit he's tightened. its almost like having GOD as your mechanic friend. yeah, picture that. picture loosening some lugnuts tightened by GOD, that shit aint easy man. Its kinda like removing excaliber from stone, but much much harder.
my favorite quote is when theo drove my car once. seeing him in my s13 hatch with harnesses (not buckled, just around his shoulders) was fucking hillarious. its like watching Donkey Kong competing in Super Mario Kart, he's too mASSIV for the puny_s13. but he was curious what a small, lightweight turbo car felt like.. since hes used to big-body american cars (dont worry what fuckin race he is, thats not part of the story assholes). anyway, theo said...
"it aint no hemi......... but its gooooooooooooood"
advice? find a better shop. it doesnt need to be "master shinobi's drift alignment shop" ... just find a fucking shop where the person is not a TOOL, who is pre-programmed and automated to using commands from a laser-guided alignment machine. if the person went to school or simply has a fucking understanding of alignments, he'll be able to take care of your car. bottom line is, stay away from costco-we-worry-about-liability shops.. they're the anal ones.
"sorry sir, we cant install any other tires other than the ones originally sold by the manufacturer which are intended to fit your vehicle. custom rims, alignments, and stuff like that is just beyond our technical experience ... because we're FUCKING IDIOTS."
--- anonymous costco employee
I think its because they don't think aftermarket is better then oem. My uncle tells me that all the time.
haha thats pretty much true. stock will usually always last longer than a built motor. about alignments, shit i havent even gotten my car aligned from when i bought it. attemped to. took it up to goodyear, said my tie rod ends were bad and they couldnt do it. got new tie rods, took it back. said they wouldnt do it cuz my tires were bad. fuck that, ill find somewhere else, im not so sure about goodyear. imma wait till coils and tires come in to go get it aligned tho. like 2 weeks tops. i can change into the right lane in like 3 seconds from how off it is, haha.

Thanks, I’m not actually a mechanic, but let me ask you, what was your highest degree in school?
I’m guessing GED?
Better google that one if you don’t know what it means.
Good job, you're proving everything that has been said about you to be true.
Wheres the asshat smiley when you need it?
I myself have a high school diploma and in another two years I'll have a degree in International Studies and a minor in Political Science.
Of course, I don't judge most people by their level of education; many people I deal with on a daily basis are highly educated and are utter idiots.
You don't need to have dropped out of high school to fail at life.

Do it yourself. Get yourself a service manual and some string, rulers, level and a calculator. might not be exact but it's pretty darn close. PM me if you want to know exactly how its done. Save yourself some money and do it yourself.
I was looking for someone with the brains to recommend this! you can get through harbor freight. if you wanna get it done right every time get these: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=45742

Look, I'm not gonna completely defend techs even though I am one. At the non-dealership shops, you just want normal jobs all day to bang out without any hiccups. Most people are on flat rate. Yes, lowered cars are a major pain is the ass. Sure everything is adjustable and that parts easy but thats not the problem most of the time. I hate pulling those cars on the damn lift cuz either I scrape the front bumper cuz it's so low and civic boy with his black widow III body kit gets pissed I scraped his 75$ bumper, or I have to get help from other techs to pull up on the fenders (and no one likes helping eachother cuz it's less time on your job). It's a simple hassle that no one wants to deal with. Also, with the laser machine you just get it in the green and get the bitch off the lift. With requested specs it just takes that much more time away, which takes that much more money outta your check. Thank god, at the dealership I dont get any of that shit anymore, but it does suck. My whip is on Tiens with adjustable arms and all, and to get my car on the alignment machine I have to have two people pulling fenders or the front bumper taken off. Take your car to a specialty shop or someone who's willing to deal with it. If you go to NTB or Tires Plus or somthn for your 1 year alignment plan for 80$, expect to get crappy results or outright refused. It's the way of the business boys.

I stay far away from any kind of Goodyear/Sears Tire/any other place like that, for one reason...
"I turned the first corner out of the parking lot and the tire fell off. The tire fell off, it fell off, it fell the fuck off!"
Just find a place that you know, or a mechanic that you know who will do it for you correctly. Or else, you can try doing it yourself. I never have, but my friends have, and the don't complain about how it drives.

I only let one mechanic in my area work on my car. He's a Russian dude, barely speaks English (we usually talk in Russian, since I can speak it better then he does English. haha)... the guy really knows his stuff, and will do whatever you ask. He often will do work you DIDN'T ask him to do. Little things like oil changes etc. if he's got time, and he doesn't cheap out on them either. He falls in that .1% of techs I guess. haha
I generally don't mod anything I don't have the tools, time or facilities to work on myself, and if I do... it goes to him.

I'm about 15-20 minutes away from a local rice hut that has all the alignment goodies.
