does anyone have any info on the paint job on this car? I want to know how its done, if anyone has done it to their 240 or seen this car in person and if it would be cheaper or more expensive than a regular full body color change to do ...pics

ratrod evo? white-wall tires?

someone here on zilvia just did a flat black paint job on his s14 track car. I think he used this stuff:

Hot Rod Flatz (http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/ksflatz.aspx)

edit: I just realized the thread is in Premium-land, but the user is mehsilvia, try pm'ing him.

ha striking resemblance....so if its satin black then how do they get that look? the car looks different than other cars with that type of paint job because it just looks incredibly clean and still reflects light even tho it doesnt appear to have clearcoat...i really am a paint noob so i hope this post makes sense

eastcoastS14

ha honestly i love that car...the guy is trying something different, taking elements straight from the hot rod style...i think so many cars end up looking the same so i have appreciation for anyone trying to keep it clean and different

its a stain finish like said above, its just done professionally not with a bunch of rattlecans, thats probably why it looks so clean. im almost positive that you can clear satin paint, im not sure if its a special clear or not.

ill ask my roomate when he gets back about it, hes been painting for a few years.

Believe it or not last week I was spraying satin clear coat. I was restoring a museum plane (c-47 if you care) and we orderd a gloss topcoat instead of the needed satin. So a few phone calls later we had satin clear coat delivered to our hanger. It was easy to spray and came out awsome. Still needed a wet edge though to minimize dry spots. I'll try to get some pics.

Wow, I wonder how that looks. Sounds pretty mean!!!! I wonder how a satin yellow, with clear would look. Damn, now i'm getting ideas.

When you clean a satin paint job like that, is there a different process? I feel like you probably wouldnt want to wax it or anything. Id kind of like to do a satin black on my convertible once i finish on the bodywork.

Hot Rod Flatz (http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/ksflatz.aspx)

Is exactly what i used.
Waxing, washing and other care is no different than any other finish. They do also offer a clear to cover the flatz paints, though i didnt see the need to go that way. As you can see in the pics, there is a nice sheen. And the finish in that pic was not sanded or buffed. Truly an awesome product and I cant wait to see someone do one of the metallic flatz.

"Hot Rod" that old-school look is what i was looking for. Its amazing how many drivers at the last track event were interested in flat finishes on their cars as well. You can imagine how its alot easier to spot/repair a flat finish.

if you want cheap black, get that hot rod flatz, or john deere blitz black, spray it on. drive your car.

I think people are a bit confused. You guys need to realize that there is a difference between a professional satin black paint job vs a rattle can job. A good satin black paint job will roughly cost the same as a normal paint job if not more. Just because your painting the car a satin or flat black doesn't necessarily mean its a cheaper paint job. You can easily see the difference between a professional satin black paint vs rattlecan.

I can't really tell from the pictures but the evo looks to be a professional job, which is why it looks so clean and even, all the other posted look to be rattlecan which is why the color looks a bit uneven and splotchy.

Yup, it's called hotrod black and I got it on my coupe. Cost me 800 bucks but thats including the body work (had alot of little dings). Sorry no pics yet. The only problem with the paint is that it's porous so if you wash then dry it with a white or light colored towel you will get lint boogers all over. After wash I jump on the freeway and air dry it.:eek3d:

All Rat Rods, Hot Rods, Street Rods, etc. were once just normal cars too. The only difference is "enthusiasts" were constantly pushing the limits and experimenting. I see no problem with this trend carrying over to any other chassis. It all stems from the same passion. Faster, Quicker, Lighter, Louder, whatever.

I love satin colors.
Not that I would paint a car if its paint is in good condition, I love my well-preserved factory paint which somehow stays really reflective, but if my 240 had discolored spots and mismatched body panels, I'd probably go with the satin red.

eastcoastS14

Ive seen alot of big failure jobs using cans.. On more then average u arent gonna get the intended look with cans.. My car is not photoshopped and was done with cans... BUT I know how to use a can alittle better then the average joe.. I use to blaze nonstop when I was younger. I would not recomend a can job on anyones car it usually turns out like shit... I just did it to my car because I have confidence in my can skills and because I needed a quick fix since I just did a kouki conversion... I plan on after a differnt hood and s14 wing to actually paint it another color using house of kolors paint and I will be doing that myself also.

i agree. the flat black just makes it look like you want to use your money elsewhere instead of dropping huge cash on a paint job. one question though, i didn't see it in this thread yet..... how exactly do you wash satin/ flat painted cars without scratching the paint?

ThatGuy
05-06-2007, 09:49 AM
Well, it's not really any cheaper then a gloss paintjob. So that analogy doesn't completely work. Sorry.

Second, a good satin paintjob can be washed the same as any other paintjob. Rattlecan paintjobs will fade with washing, put a real paintjob with a satin base and satin clear coat are maintianed just like a normal gloss paintjob. I don't have experience with say a carnuba wax on satin, but washing is the same. Soap, Water, Sponge, Elbow Grease.
