I have been into cars since I was about 12.  Maybe it's because I lived in Hong Kong for 12 years, I always like Japanese cars, and when I first got here, I always wish there were more people hooking Japanese cars.  However, recently, it's been pissing me off that people are modifying their imports, because now, it's not really about speed and performance, it's about huge body kits, altezzas, oversized heavy rims, loud exhaust, putting other cars' tail and head lights in another car, alumimum wings (esp. on FF), loud stereo systems, driving with one hand and sitting int he middle of the car and putting the seat all the way back.  People think all the stuff above are cool now.  And the whole Honda pride crap.  When I was in middle school, and I talked to friends about what car they want, most American kids would say a mustang, now you ask them, it's probably a freaking civic so they can rice it.  I don't like American cars, but I know for sure that mustangs are better than civics a lot because at least they are sports cars, not economy cars.  
After coming back from Hong Kong, it pisses me off even more, because most people over there do it right, (there are still some ricers, mostly civics that aren't type r)  and then I come back, and I see people driving with one hand sitting in the middle of the car with loud music driving around and racing people, it seriously makes me angry.
I remember my dad told me he had an alfa romeo when he was young and used to race it and tell me all these stories and stuff, now , can you imagine how sad it will be in ten or twenty years when these teenagers become fathers and telling their kids that they drove a civic with a big body kit, 20 inch rims, and a alumimum wing?  God, this is terrible.  I just had to express my feelings.

Well the import scene is getting way out of hand, we are slowly getting away from the basics, and now going into havign certain things for bragging rights. More and more people are fixing up autos, and more and more people just get turbos to say they have a turbo or to hear the BOV. As long as I never turn into one of them I wil be happy. I figure it's time to just start ignoring them, and going on with your life. I have seen so many debates on here about people talking to someone who think this is better than that, and bla bla bla. Yes Azn GTR I totally know how you feel. THe ricer bug has infected the majority of highschool teens and the Fast and the Furious obviously helped it spread. The sadest thing about this whole situation is that not only do these people just drive around racing everyone they all brag about how fast their stock economy cars are. I was talking to one of my friends and yes it is a girl about what car she is getting she just got her license back then and she said a prelude and it is already really fast and modded out. I believed her whole story about the previous owner making lotsa a mods to that car. Engine work, 2000 dollar rims etc. Then when I see the car and check out the engine I became very disappointed and realized how rice has infected all who are ignorant. She didn't even have a v-tec engine or even a intake her rims where ass ugly and heavy also. (sorry for babling ricers bother me)

My thought on the Import Scene: Import Models rock and the cars just happen to be there. Example: Import Revolution. You always hear about the IRev GIRLS, never the IRev Cars. But hell, Im not complaining.

The "Import Scene" sucks ass.  Any kind of "scene" sucks.  I personally HATE show cars, people bragging about their cars, etc, thats like 99% of this whole "import scene."

I tend to stick to my own, no scene, no whatever.  Just my own thoughts, and what I like.

I had been into cars since I was 13 years old, starting with an FD, then just studying more and more.  It also helps that mom used to be into cars when she was my age 31 years ago, and had stories to tell when I was younger.  What does she think of all this here?  SHIT.  She likes a few of my friend's cars that are clean, but majority she see's on California streets...  What does she think about it in Japan?  She doesn't really care for it, but its still more or less how it was when she was drving and stuff when she was living there.

Magazines like super street make it worse, exploting "trends" done in Japan when they've been doing it for like 30 years.

Import models suck.

The import scene has been down hill since around 1997. Thats when all the ricy kits started to come out and all the imatation products. Around 99', it hit new lows with mad different combinations of lighting products. Around 00' the IS300 (Altezza) came to the states, which led to the production of Altezza taillights. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('> A very sad moment in time.

Im Nisei (2nd Gen Japanese) and all my relatives live in Japan. I have been there dozens of times. Over time, I have got to see how the real spirit of building/tuning your own car is.  It is so different over there.  Most drivers have respect for other drivers on the road and are so much more courteous. I'm 20 yrs old now. I started getting into cars around 12-13. I always wanted to drive though ever since 8. My older brother was a "Rotary" type guy. All he ever drove/crashed (just 1) were FC's. This was back around 1994 and the "import scene" (which it wasnt called back then) was really TRUE to the Japanese car enthusiast spirit. I wish I had the chance to drive around in those days. Its funny to think about what the future holds for us.

BTW: My favorite hip-hop jams were from 89-94. Thats my favorite period for hip-hop. The "New Jack" era to the "G-funk era". But also the old break beat stuff from the mid 80's. I hate all the hip-hop jams out right now. Its J-POP for me now. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

I feel ya about the music man.. there was some good shit back then (DMC, 2pac, etc) as for ricers...fuck em. Im not them, and they're not me. I ignore the civics and shit that wanna race. If they wanna race, they can pay to fix my car. Until then, they can all fuck themselves. my other thoughts need not come out now, for I am tired. Well time for bed peace.

If you dont like what other people drive then why pay any attention? If some jackass wants to put 20 grand into a civic to bling bling it out then so be it..... Just if he roles up next to me on the twistys I will slide around his ass..... probably slow back down and do it again.
The thing is that I have seen this post way to much as of lately... just drop it, obviously you like hondas or you wouldnt care to bitch about them(Not picking on just you AZN). I mean shit I dont hear people bitching about pimped out SUV's or low riders... Those people are not in our scene... i dont classify riced out civic as being in my scene either so I dont care.
I will appreciate a well modified honda... toyota, nissan, subaru, etc..... cause those are the cats in our scene.
Another thing... its just not hondas... how many people on this board have bought 240s in the last 4 months and the first thing they upgrade is the engine..."SR20DET here I come" bla
The only engine mod I have on my car is  CAI and thats just cause I got it off another 240 in a junkyard for 20 bucks. All depends on the girl, I've met some really nice import models, and I've met quite a few bitchs that model imports. Im indifferent I guess..

To say just ignore it may come easy to some that don't live in the area that I do.  Civickilla can back me on this one <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>   It's horrible.  Riced out civics and 'tegs as far as the eye can see. The fart cans and huge wings and I won't even limit it to the imports the v6 mustangs are even worse w/ rebadging to GT-R and the cobra emblems.  
Just to see the misguided youth is depressing...now ask me if I would rather see a 16yr old pushing a riced out civic or a 400hp monster...please God let me see him in a civic cause he's too stupid to know how to drive a 400hp car.  But the foundation is completely of base.  I want to meet and greet true car enthusiasts (mostly older guys in domestics) that know what enjoying cars is all about not someone quoting the last issue of SuperStreet. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/crazy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':crazy:'>  <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':angry:'>
I guess that is why I hang on this board because the enthusiasm about cars remains based in the engine bay and not the "unique just like everyone else" euro tails.
But back to my point, the ignorance that surrounds me everyday in my area is absurd and completely depressing kids hanging out at McDonald's seeing whose HIDs are brighter

All I can say is take one under your wing and guide him/her in the right direction.  That is what I have done w/ a co-worker.  Do something to help the scene and don't just complain about it

I totally agree with you except for one aspect - one handed driving.

Now if the car is automatic, I can see your point, but if the tranny is manual then you really don't have much choice. I mean with my legs operating the clutch and gas, and both arms on the wheel, I would only have one extendable appendage left to reach the shifter. Even though it may be long enough to do so <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sly.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':sly:'> , I doubt it would possess the dexterity to change gears, cuz otherwise I would be sitting in California within a room with flood lighting and fur lining, while having 70's funk playing in the background. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/eh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':eh:'>

i'd say unless you own an older hot rod, camaro or mustang, the whole scene sucks. yes. me and my friend with the Z do not hang out with any racing crowds. no Z club, no st louis street racing meets, and i don't hang out with the s10/blazer xtreme club. we just enjoy our vehicles and have fun. i just think this generation of people are a bunch of assholes. pretty much 25 and under. people have forgotten the fun aspect of it, and are concentrating too much on the competition and ego part of it. i think the 240SX crowd have the least amount of assholes and do not concentrate on competition as much.

What wrong with being a little competitive?!

Now there is one import crowd that deserved allot of credit. Is the import crowd at the auto x's. I don't think they can be called a crowed. There usually older 20+. They mod there cars for performance. Generally really freaking competitive. Respectful of each others cars.

They do have a lot stickers but that's okay 'cause the those are thier sponsors and class numbers.

do what my crew did, we dont meet on the beach anymore... we meet in the old business part of town.. behind building where people can't see us. We race out in the middle of no where... we never invite people we slowly let people in.. people we become friends with... dont ever talk to ricers... just wait.. when the media gets done with it no one will do it anymore.. cept for the ones who are real to it.

edit:  i should note.. me any my brother own a shop.. so its easy for us to meet the people that are really into the scene..  when we started meets out at the beach.. it was the best... but now you drive by and see stock cars, mustangs, bikes, gay imports, kias, daewhats, rice crap, airbagged trucks... people took it as a place to hang out...  i feel the same way as you guys do.. ive been into cars since i was little... i like clean body kits and nice wings, mad power gets my dick hard.. but now its just out of hand.. i went by the beach one time and saw around 6 or 7 cars with graphics....  i dont dislike graphics but... stock sunfires with hubcaps do not need MI graphics on them.. 2002 v6 mustangs with cobra rims does not need the same graphics as the skyline gt-r33 from the fast and the furious...  this one kid has some 4 door kia with a NOS bottle.. just the bottle.. he said its for looks, last time i stopped this kid asked if we could get him a fake bov and a fake fmic...  really sad....

im into that whole show and go thing.. but people are just doing whatever think think gets them the most attention..  i do it all for me.. and only me.. everyone could tell me that something looks ugly and it wont matter..  these kids just want loud... the image if u will..  its sad but, im sure it will pass..  i use to be into net and hacking really bad and the same thing happened when "hackers" movie came out..  people would hunt us down on irc and search our webpages and e-mail us wanting to know how to crash 1507 computers...  i was like "wtf?"  they see it in a movie..  think its cool and jump on.. then they get bored because they are not doing it right or at all and give up...

Enthusiasm is what we make it.  My auto "scene" involves nothing but respect and fun - even with total strangers.

The "import scene" is just another bunch of white/yellow/brown trash.  Ghetto fabulous is what it's all about.  You don't have to live there to be ghetto.  If you ever did something to your car because it would impress someone else, you just might be a member.

It all reminds me of '50s B-movies...  Where the "bad kids" always drove a hot rod or a bike.  People in our parents' and grandparents' generation fought like hell to clean up the image of "car guys" in the '60s, to get rid of the small time thug stereotype... and now we have kids doing everything they can to reinforce it.

But, whatreyougonnado.  In 5 years they'll be over it, and the true enthusiasts will still be driving.

The import scene could be dead for all I care. I don't hang out at Mickie D's bumping Nelly. I don't read stupid street. I don't jock alteeza's. I don't own a visor. I don't try and race everything with doors and 4 or more tires. I don't plan my year around the NOPI or HIN show schedule.That is not my click.

I am a sports car enthusiast. I like driving, owning, building, admiring sports cars. Aside from the number of tires, one has nothing to do with the other.

the ppl who really piss me off are the kids who are sponsored by mommy and daddy, and the kids who dont know jack about cars... or worse a combination of both. im not saying i know much but i know atleast what makes my car run and how it runs.

most of the kids in the "scene" dont know how to change thier own oil, light bulbs or whatever and it just happens to be that those kids are the ones that own the civics and integras (well thats how it is in orlando).  where as the ones that know something or are learning soemthing about cars tend to stay away from all the bling bling meet ups at wal mart and the illegal street races.

KiDynomite- how can you think tila cheri and natasha are ugly?? Cheri was the reason, well she was the reason for somethin or other I cant remember, but shes really hot (to me) and I sat on her lap and my friend will never live it down... I think tila is gorgous! I went bowling last night and there was a girl there that sorta resempled her. I wanted to talk to her but she had some big ass asian boyfriends there. personally i dont see anything wrong with making a import car look good or making it fast. i like body kits.

heres what i dont like. i hate people that get a car and dont know shit about it. dont pretend to be a enthuasit if ur not. go up to some rice body and ask him what body kit he has and he'll know... ask him what engine he has and he'll say "huh"?

Does it really matter that much whether someone knows why the car goes fast if it does?  Jeez, most of the riceboys I meet know their parts like their birthday - especially the pimpy JDM stuff.

On the other hand, rice-queens are a fine symbol of everything that's wrong with most people in the "import scene."  Bling bling - "Look at my mutt-face and plastic tits!"  Ugly girls trying too hard.  Just like the ugly, cheap cars trying too hard.  I see girls plenty hotter than that walking down the street every day and cars that are way more attractive and sporty.  But neither the rice-queens nor the guys in $15K "sports" cars accept just what they are.

see, you should just stfu... you do not know anything about cars yourself.. you and your loser idea that a "real sports car" uses a manual..  well, i have about 3 friends with automatics that will kill any car on this board...  my brothers automatic maxima takes out 5.0s like nothing..   i dont care weather someone likes something or not but i just thought that your comment was really stupid "automatics are gay" whats with that word?  you think a transmission has a sexual desire for men?  I wanted to switch to manual.. but I have older friends who own 12, 11, 10 (auto), and 9 second cars and they have all told me if I want my car to run 10s keep it an automatic because its better for consistant times.  The fastest import in america with metal body, auto, and 4cyl is a 240sx.  But whatever, ive been racing for years and will do everything I can to put my car at a 10 or less with my auto.  I really dont give a sh*t what some kids say...  There is guys on the Maxima forum running 12s and 11s with autos and stock body with full interior.   Ive seen a 4th gen auto pull a 12 myself.

Thats what I meant, I like them a ton better than the newer ones. Natasha Yi is prolly the best looking to me, and Tila is very hot same with Cherie, there are more hot ones, but I like those the most.

ha! i saw an 80's accord the other day. it was stock marroon with prime rims (must have been at least 14's!!!! whoa!<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>, a 3foot aluminum wing, cut springs (he went over the speed bump at the mall...wobble,wobble,wobble), neon green light under the chasis, and on the grill he had LED lights moving back and forth! The first thing that came into my mind was "Knight Rider", only that show was cool. My input,.. Its funny how these people can spend tons of time at races/meets/ shows yet they still dont know jack.. Yes it gets kinda on my nerves because when people hear that im fixin up my car, im sure they think I got the idea from the fast and furious.. etc.. Everyone has a freakin import, and I think its killing our soo beloved "tuner" scene. When I heard a Pep Boys radio add on the local rap station, I literly freaked!! advertising APC products and street glow and Motegi wheels... And had some lame announcers acting like kids, and the sound of a oversized exhuast car peel out...

There are some nice import models, and I do admire them, and then there are the chicks that are just there in groups that only do it because of whatever reason, I mean the ones that are in bunches dont look that good, where as some of the more "individual" models are fine. My favorite models are probably Christine Mendoza and Rowena Galam, They don't have to show nudity, or at least stumped to that low.

now as for the fact that automatics are gay. that was never aimed at u. my preference is 5 speed. yours may be auto i dont care. i never said auto was no good. i know that most real drag muscle cars are auto or power glide. most rail jobs are either 2 speed or 3 speed auto. notice the automatic 10 second Ford SVT Lightings....am i complaining no. i mean shit if i could have got a auto s14 i would have in a second. the car is awesome and i'd live with auto. but i figure that if im spending x amount of dollars on a car its gonna be waht i want.

autos are gay when some jerkoff in a 4 door civic decides to take his stock car with a combat kit and neons to the strip and wants to run 10s like in the fast in the furious. all he wants to use his car for is cruiseing around his "hood" with his fart can and w7s annoying people.

This kid who was like all into punk music and starting a band.. woke up one day and decided he was a Import Expert.... he got a 1990 Talon for $2000.... painted it... cheap rims... tires... wing.... Cranked up the boost and blew the head... so now hes selling it for $7000 and he claims it has 4 wheel steering... right......  :!:

Anyways he has no idea what hes doing or talking about... i just hope he stays away from 240's and Toyotas  <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

Oh another example of kids waking upto the "scene"
this kid who was hardcore ANTI RICE aka anything not made in America was a ricer.... He called my firends stock '99 Camry a "rice rocket" dispite the fact that its stock and made in Canada... anyways this kid goes and buys a 1990 RS Integra and the kid who has the talon tells the kid with the Integra that his "TEG" is fast because it has a B16 or a B18 motor hes not exactaly sure...... I said after that... it has a B18, you better go read up on engine codes from the last super street...

Its things like this that make me feel almost  shame for owning a import and having people who are just exposed to this kid with the talon and other ppl like that in towns accorss the country and that they think me or my friends are just idiots like most of the them....

now as for the fact that automatics are gay. that was never aimed at u. my preference is 5 speed. yours may be auto i dont care. i never said auto was no good. i know that most real drag muscle cars are auto or power glide. most rail jobs are either 2 speed or 3 speed auto. notice the automatic 10 second Ford SVT Lightings....am i complaining no. i mean shit if i could have got a auto s14 i would have in a second. the car is awesome and i'd live with auto. but i figure that if im spending x amount of dollars on a car its gonna be waht i want.

I don't mean this to sound assy, but with the average age of the people on this board, that is IMPOSSIBLE.  

There are only a few people on this board over 25.  Imports (limited to Japanese) have been the trendy car at least that last 7 years.  In the late 80's there were VWs but by 1993 some of my friends were adding Eibachs and Lightspeed or RS Akimoto parts to their Hondas.  A couple years later, I was joined the ranks, but was by no means a pioneer.  By the time I bought my Si in 96, the market was huge and the stuff was everwhere.  Most people here would have been in highschool then - IF THAT.  To act self-righteous over being "into" imports is ridiculous unless you were doing it in the 80s.

Mark -who saw Henry Rollins in concert when he was just a nameless, faceless member of Black Flag and had Lance Mountain skate his half-pipe... which is a lot less common than any Nissan!

Well said, I can't understand the scene of ownership that people have over the "scene" as they see it. I really don't think any one on this board can truly say that they are a pioneer in the 240 scene or the import scene for that matter.

Or that they weren't a total n00b at one point. I know I still am.

I cant really say i was into imports in the 80's because i was born in 1984... I started school in 1990 and my brothers first new car was some Audi turbo that our parents got him when it came out that year... As for being into imports... i pretty much determied that when i was in like grade 5, obviously may years before I could drive let alone afford my own car but still young enough to be bias due to the fact that everyone liked Ford Or GM and there was the occassional Viper lover.... I remember being singled out for liking jap scrap when all the other kids liked the Mustang or the Vette and I liked the 3000GT.... Most kids in like Grade 5 dident know what a mitsubishi was... this was like in 1993 or 1994 mind you....

Yea the funny thing is now... all those kids that were pro american muscle and called anything non Ford or GM "jap scrap" all praise the honda civic now like its gods car.... yeh maybe gods grocery getter, with one working headlight..  cracked windshield, bent antenna, body rust, decaying exhaust system, boomin factory stereo, installed shogun bodykit thats just been tacked on and primered... You know the things kids show up with on cruise nights, or just some of the things to expect from a older model civic...

-I used to have neon underglow lights
-I bought my nitrous kit after Fast and the furious

Giving these few characeristics one would have to deem me as a ricer based on eveyone's criteria.

here's the secret. It's fun! If I thought it would be fun to put a huge wing on my car (I will one day) I'll do it. My car doesn't look all bling bling at the moment however it will. My car will be in car shows. It will be flashy. Why? Because that's what I want to do. Is it rice? hell No! It's a blast!
It's so much fun to BS with kids you don't even no about their b18c powered EK hatch's. How they run 13.5's on stock ls blocks in civic coupes. I have a blast doing it.

Sunday I went to battle of somethin or another in denwitty VA. On my way back at the gas startion pulls up a talon with huge body kit big wing etc. I say "thats the 4g63 you got right?" Kids like "Huh? I just do body stuff". Whatever kid know's nothing about cars. His car still looked kinda cool though. Point is the whole ride back to NoVa we sat in traffic and BS'd. Kid was kinda cool.

It's all in good fun. That's what it's about. Not labeling somebody rice because you don't like what he's done to his car.
My car looks like ass at the moment but yet it's the greatest feeling to roll up to a place with hundreds of honda's and have 50 odd people crowd around my engine bay to admire all the hard work I put in it.

I could care less how the scene is, you just have to learn how to ignore certain aspects. You alone are not going to change the scene and bitching and moaning about it on an online forum isn't going to do any good either.

As for punk music, it r0x0rz. It's one of the only types of music that I listen to as consistently as techno..

It's a learning experience and I'm better off for it. I knew the engine was gonna blow and I was prepared when it did.

Nope...I'm a poor college student.  On the other hand if my car hadn't gotten broken into and my stereo stolen, I would be able to afford to do the mods that I want, and then I could answer this with a "yes."  Although, I don't have the necessary tools to do the job because once again, I'm just a poor college student.  I'm glad you have the money to blow engines and replace them for the learning experience, but I sir, do not.

ok I retract my previous statment. I can understand when having your car vandalized what it can do for your wallet.

Trust me I'm just as much of a poor college student as your are if not more.

I bought the car knowing I would put an SR in it. I bought the nitrous kit to tide me over until I had all the resources to do my swap. Then when the time came we did the swap. By the time my motor blew I had enough money saved up for everything I needed. We did the swap with a $30 Husky socket wrench set, $20 ACdelco jack and jack stand kit and a engine lift I borrowed from a friend.  

I don't want to start a flame war, Just realize that your earlier statement came off as harsh and offending. I knew what I was doing when I blew my motor now that it's all over I look at it with pride because most people in that situation would have bought another car or paid "X" amount of dollars to have a shady mechanic fix it. I on the other hand bought a "better" motor and installed it in my car my self. I hope you can see why I'm proud of that experience.

The only real problem I have is someone driving their car like it's a bad ass machine when it's only a stock NA motor with a fart-cannon on it, super-white headlight bulbs, and a big GT wing.  And I don't even mind it if the person doesn't have an attitude and doesn't really think their car is hot shit.  However, at least where I live, most do, and that really bothers me.

My '97 240sx SE is stock right now.  I know it, and I drive it like it's stock.  Sure, I have fun with it from time to time, but I'm not out trying to race everything on the road and trying to act like I'm putting down 350 rwhp.  If someone wants to slap a 3" cat-back exhaust on their Civic, along with some rims and lowering springs and go goof around with their car, fine by me.  But I hate the attitude most people with cars like that have.  I really have to suppress the urge to get out and throttle those little bitches.

I don't take people like that seriously, and I just end up ignoring the morons that take themselves seriously.  I'm of the opinion that people who put aftermarket body mods on their cars to make them look fast should have a car that goes as fast as it looks.  Sadly, that's not the case around here, for the most part.  And most of the people that are all show have the attitude to boot, which is what really annoys me.  I've met a few exceptions, but not many.

So if someone wants to "rice" their car out, it's not really a problem to me.  I usually just point and laugh with my friends as we drive by.  It's their car, their choice...just not how I care to do things.  However, if a riced out car with nothing but show also has a driver with an attitude, then it's all I can do just to ignore them.
