Turbo...or not turbo. It's a 1998 ka24de with about 69k on it, and in good shape. Small boost, only about 6-7psi, only want about 200rwhp...Or, I could just leave it alone and stay 100% reliable. Kinda leaning toward turbo...But, still on the fence.

"Small" boost on a t28 is not like "small" boost on a t88d.
If you would be able to sling $3000 easily in the case that your motor blows, as well as affording going through turbocharging AND tuning your vehicle while running proper tuning equipment and a good tuner(Apex'i Power FC, GReddy e-manage, AEM EMS, bikirom, etc.), I would suggest doing so.
Think twice, look once. Don't lego build your motor.
A few good resources to enable you to make a final decision on your own.

Sorry for another question...But, I need to get some hood pins. Will the cheap ones on ebay work? I know you get what you pay for, but this isn't a set of coilovers or manifold. I just need some hood pins that will keep my hood down. At least, until I can get some really nice locking ones. So, will these do for now?

I have used ebay hood pins.
Didnt' break on me, but the next owner had to buy a new windshield.
Like I said about the KA-T...think twice, move once.
I HAVE heard decent things about the Summit hood pins, which are relatively inexpensive, but IMO i'd still save up and do it right the first time around.

Oh yes, don't worry for the turbo set-up I am planning it out and taking the time for a QUALITY build. No crap or ebay parts for me, I have been over to ka-t.org a LOT also soaking up information.
Only reason I ask about the hood pins, is that I just need something for a few weeks or a month until I get my tax return. And, the ones on ebay that are like $5-6 just looked like they might work. But, I wouldn't keep them in the longrun. What brand of hood pins do you recommend, also?

i have a question, hopefully a simple answer to go with it.
i turned 16 in january, and i will be getting a job very soon as the summer approaches. I plan on saving about 2500-3000 for a stock 240 for my next birthday, and my question is as follows. I know a fair bit about cars and engines and the like, but i was just wondering what you would suggest for a beginner like me, a 89-90 SOHC 240, or a DOHC S13, in terms of maintenance/turbo capability later on down the road. I am asking since i see that the SOHC 240s usually go for less, but in terms of aftermarket and reliability isues, is it worth it to get a DOHC??
thanks in advance for the reply!

For those few weeks i'd honestly rather duct tape my damn hood down. Do you have an aftermarket hood without a hood latch?
You're making me do a lot of work...

Let me tell you a little bit about my 240sx history.
It all started out with a dookie brown 240sx hatch. 190k on it...the odometer died at 170k...nothing really worked. It was an auto. I dogged the shit out of it for the 9 months I owned it, put probably 20k on it, and never changed the oil.
The guy I sold it to still drives it today.
If my memory serves me correctly the KAE have a better powerband as well.
Side note: ALWAYS BE 100% HONEST WITH WHAT YOU SELL. Don't do what I did to my car and tell the owner you babied it. I'm 100% up front with everything and everyone else should be.
Now as for modification down the line, many people sell rebuild kits for KAE, but there are many many MANY more parts for the KADE, and KADE is what wins the popularity contest.
If I were you i'd focus more on body condition, cause swapping a KA is easy as cake. I personally worry more about mileage/rust/condition more, cause either will suffice and both will probably be pulled out eventually.
I don't know Canadian prices, but in the US you used to be able to buy a perfect 240sx for $1000USD before Tokyo Drift. Now they want $3000USD. Don't give into the hype...i'd rather get semi-ripped off on a shell and fix it up myself than pay THAT MUCH. But don't get a cursed car, just try and talk people down. I've talked down a $3000 240sx to $1300 before, it's all in how you do it.

Drive without a hood, or don't install the CF hood. If you already did, just take it off and do it over again...you probably had it on crooked anyways man.

alright, thanks for the straight up answer. my auto teacher in highscool is super cool and hes got the knowledge and tools to swap an engine, and my dad knows his way around a car. so ill be hunting down a low km KA as first priority.
one more thing, i was thinking of buying an auto 240 just because, this would mean less abuse to the car? i also hear 5spd swaps are fairly straight forward, and there is lots of information on the net about it.

There is a great thread in the FAQ/Archives section of the forum on the conversion.
And honestly, just do a compression test and look at the car. I just ended up with an auto cause all convertibles are and cause I got a deal on it.
If you see a good deal on an auto, do it.
If you see a good deal on a manual, do it.

ok. so my car is making this nasty ass clanking noise. It makes it when i start up the car but then it goes away in a matter of seconds. I drive the car, i stop and go. For the first 10 to 15 min, when i come to a stop and the car idles around 800 rpm its doenst make the clanking noise. But as the car gets a bit warmer, it raddles till you rev it to 2000 rpm. If i stop at a light, it makes the noise, as i take off, it will raddle till i get passed 2000 rpm..after 200rpm its all good. What can be the problem?
Thanx in advance.

What kind of noise? Where exactly is the noise coming from (have a friend rev and put your head in the engine bay or something)?
Are you familiar with timing chain rattle? Are you familiar with rod knock?
I don't have enough information to feel comfortable providing an answer.

Well the noise sounds like its coming from underneath the car.
But i went under the car and nothing seemed to be loose.
The car doesnt even have to be revd in order for you to hear the noise.
The noise sounds like something is loose, kinda like metal hitting metal.
Im not familiar with timing chain rattle or rod knock. please explain!
actually someone told me, it could be that the timing chain is loose? is that an easy problem to fix?
Farzam
04-28-2007, 02:44 AM
Did the person who tell you that hear it personally? Are they trustworthy?
Do you have much experience in the s-chassis platforms?
Timing chain rattle is very common and it sounds like a little clicky-esque noise. It's caused by the upper timing chain guide, I believe. Nothing really horrible, i've seen maybe 2 S13 that didn't have it.
When was the last time you changed your timing chain? It could also be that your timing chain is loose/old and sucky. Hah, I make your timing chain sound like a prostitute.
Many many many things rattle and unless the car is in front of me, I don't want to act like I KNOW what's going on, all I can do is give you a guess. Take your car to a trusted professional and see what they say. You're in LA, i'm sure there are at least 2 or 3 shops that can tell what's up with a KA.
A million things can cause weird noises...
Heat shields, fuel injectors, relays, spun bearings, cams, timing chains, timing chain guides, timing chain tensioners, dying animals, etc. That's basically motor things alone.
These are old cars, you have to keep that in mind.
LMK what's going on if/when you find out.

got a question...im redoin my wheels and brakes on my 240, but on a tight budget..so far im replacing the rotors, rebuilding the calipers, and getting new brake pads..on a car that is nearly 12 years old, with the past 2 of them sitting out in the elements, would you replace the wheel bearings as well?

Hmmm, got another one. Like I said I am aiming for around 200rwhp with my turbo setup. Now, I'm not going to really be pushing the car at all. No drifting, or anything, just a little spirited driving now and then. Do you think this warrants any major brake upgrades (big brake upgrade??), besides getting high performance rotors and brake pads in the stock size? So basically, would big brakes be overkill?

2 words I use all the time, but are the worst things ever; tight budget. I have next to know money, I know how it is...but you're way better off waiting until you have enough money or getting mommy to lend you some money than being cheap. I've waited 3 months to buy a dang exhaust so I could pass inspection, patience is a virtue and it will pay off well in the end!
Go to Autozone and get calipers/rotors through them, I believe they give you money back if you give them your old stuff, or it may be Advanced Auto Parts. Make a quick phone call to both of them and then maybe other local stores and see what they do about that, it might only be a local thing for me.
IMO for rotors, I always get Brembo blanks. I read an article about how blank rotors work better than drilled/slotted which is basically for looks and cause back in the day for brake dust-related issues. F1 cars use blanks last time I checked, why wouldn't you (and ironically Brembo makes most F1 car brakes)?
If you can call a few local shops and see what they can do for you, that'd be cool. My father is a business owner and I know how smaller businesses always need the most support, as well as usually caring more about the customer.
As far as brake pads, it really depends on what you want to do with the car. Don't look for the best brake pads out w/ the most stopping power, but for the best brake pads for the amount of stopping power you feel the need for. If you're a drifter and you have a super badass brake system, you'd have to get used to the more immediately braking, and you'd probably have to be lighter on the brakes, but if you used a brake pad that's just right, you could overpower it and do your cool drifty manuevers.
While you're at it, get some brake lines (Goodridge is what I use by default), and make sure you bleed it out well and check everything twice over.
Wheel bearings are cheap; why not do it? Seriously brah, you don't even really need to buy a bearing packer (which are what, like $10?). Get your wheel off, hub off, everything out the way, take out the old bearing, unpackage the new bearing, and follow these steps.
My MS paint skills are amazing, I know.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c285/Farzam/packingbearings.jpg
Note: I do it this super old school way cause I really like wiping my hands off on myself and then going home and getting an extra special dinner from my mommy...and it just makes my work clothes look badass.

Big brakes would be kinda dumb.
It'd be kinda ironic to only run that much power and want huge brakes.

why do people say that the length of the intercooler piping really matters
and furthermore can you find hte formula that actually calculates the time to pressurize X legth of pipe to support your claim?

re: the 'big brake' conundrum
the only way brake upgrades are useful is if they're done right.
Doing a complete Z32 brake swap is good, fronts-only is bad.
Do it right the first time, don't half-ass.
You'd be amazed how nice stock brakes can be with new rotors, high-friction pads, some stainless lines and fresh fluid.
Farzam
04-28-2007, 05:23 AM
Well, before I touch base with your question, i'd like to remind people what exactly an intercooler does, and teach those readers who have no idea. I will try and keep this basic, since this isn't NASA.
In intercooler is sort of like a radiator, except it has air go through the outside as well as the inside. Intake air goes through the core, and air outside goes across fins. It's a heat transfer, neither touch but heat is exchanged.
Intercoolers help make power safer so you can make more power overall. It cools the pressurized air that the turbo makes before it gets into the engine itself. If you're running 9psi, the intercooler will provide 9psi of COOLER air, which has more air molecules/is denser than warm air, which generally means more power and a lesser chance of detonation.
Anyways, back to what Grant asked.
It makes no difference.
Here is a site with the formulas, just get the values and do it up to find out.

Compressor map time!
Yet again, a little background information.
A turbine is the "hot side" of a turbocharger. Exhaust gasses go through it, then expand and spin the turbine wheel that drives the compressor shaft.
Compressor is the "cold side" which sucks in intake air and compresses so the engine can combust it.
Surge is the absolute lowest amount of air a compressor will supply at a certain ratio of pressure, and anything above this will make your compressor "gulp" air...which isn't good for your turbo/power, but from what I understand you would have to have a HUGE compressor and tiny turbine to be concerned with gulping.
http://img88.exs.cx/img88/3860/surge.jpg
x-axis is mass air of the compressor
y-axis is the pressure ratio(x in the equation below);
Atmosphere Pressure+Boost Pressure= X
Atmospheric Pressure
Ratio of 1.0 is atmospheric pressure, normal dookie that gravity does on it's own.
2.0 is equivalent to ~14.7psi in your IM.
Usually by default I say the pressure is ambient at the compressor's inlet. Pressure drops result in less power than mass flowrates would suggest.
Those cool looking rings are effiency islands. This is where the compressor has about the same efficiency at compressing air. You guessed it, the higher the efficiency, the better cause there will be less unnecessary heat provided to the charge air by the compressor.
4 main things;
The motor's displacement
The volumetric efficiency (engine "breathing")
Pressure at your inlet valves (the boost, ya big dummy)
Teh RPMz reached
Changing any of the four above things will usually yield more combustion and generally more power.
If this is brief, please tell me.

Should I swap the RB20 or the SR into my S13? Money is not really a problem just wanting an opinion.

If you can afford an SR, you can afford an RB25, which is better than both motors.
But that's my opinion based on what I would want with a car.

Do you know the difference?
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm
Read that and it should help you learn some more so you can make the decision on your own.
IMO for a road race car i'd look for a helical LSD.
A helical biases torque from one side to the other side, and are capable of transfering more torque to the wheel that has traction, which is why they're so cool.

I have a question for you. I have had a CA in my vert now for about a year and a half. I use a Greddy Multi Switcher to control my fans. For some reason when I turn on my lights or any accesories the temp raises about 2-3 degrees for every accessory I have on. I have checked all my grounds and even made a grounding kit. The problem is still there. I have even taken out the dash harness and engine harness just to double check that there is no shorts, and took out any unnecessary wiring for things that are not hooked up. Do you have any suggestions as to what is causing this? I am out of ideas as to what is making this happen.

A guy on a local forum had basically the same issue, he contacted GReddy about it and just plainly said "issue solved".
It might not even be a big deal.
When you have A/C and such on, you lose power, right? So maybe that's the same way. I'll look into it some, but contact GReddy as well since you're actually physically with the car and if they want you to try something you can.
Hey man thanks for your response. Its good to know that there are cheaper, smarter, options out there that allow me to do more to keep my car in a healthy shape...anywho, peace :rawk:
Yeah man, just ask around and in the end it'll help.:bigok:

Yeah I have contacted Greddy about the issue. Their first suggestion was grounding the motor better. I had already done that so I ruled that out right away. Then they told me to use shielded wire. Did that and no change. The reason it is such a problem is because it was making my car run too cold, and was throwing the ecu into a cold start mode.

Try putting it in another car or using another unit and see what happens...

Yeah it sucks. I don't have any friends :( well none that want me to try it in their car. I am investigating farther today. Note: I changed the temp sensor about a week ago, because it was bad. Still no change when I did that. I look forward to what you find, that I haven't yet!

In other words, what are you, Farzam, hoping to gain with this thread?

Just a little update. Now the dash lights and gauge lights dim for a split second when I hit the brakes. My defi gauges will reset if I hit the brakes like ~3-5 times. What do you think? STILL a weak ground?

Made this thread at Kevin's request/demand/command.
He specifically said to put this thread in chat or tech and I figured chat would be best, but if you think it needs to be moved, then by all means do so.
What I hope comes out of the thread is that people gain knowledge on topics addressed and to enrich the zilvia community. It seems that many n00bs get caught up in being a n00b and get left behind, and this is partially to ensure that they get a better chance at becoming a rolemodel zilvian. I'm essentially being a humanoid search function.

You have a bad case of electric gremlins.
Call the Ghostbusters as soon as you can. Make sure the gremlins can't hear you.
Get a voltometer, look around and see if everything is fine. Also check your Fuses, relays, harnesses, battery, grounds, etc...doesn't hurt to look.
I'd probably take out all the electronics you have and see if the car still acts up and then slowly install/uninstall stuff. Doesn't sound like much fun, but you'll probably run into the problem. It's what I do.

re: the 'big brake' conundrum
the only way brake upgrades are useful is if they're done right.
Doing a complete Z32 brake swap is good, fronts-only is bad.
Do it right the first time, don't half-ass.
You'd be amazed how nice stock brakes can be with new rotors, high-friction pads, some stainless lines and fresh fluid.
why is this the case? when i got my clip it came with only larger front brakes and the rear cross member had small regular rears, so thats what i put on
Why is front only bad?

So they could make Infiniti.
But really it's about brake balance...there's more important things than sizes.
but on a side note, it wont hurt you terribly just running the fronts....after all they do do what like 85% of the work anyways?

the reasoning behind 'stock rears' and z32 size fronts here in Japan is they come from the factory with different proportioning than US cars
I'm not an engineer so I know fuckall about designing proper brake proportioning in a factory car, but I know that with Z32 fronts on a US market S-chassis, the front bias goes from something like 65-70 to ~93%. Do NOT quote me on those numbers, that's just what the mice spinning the wheels in my head are telling me. Asad did a good breakdown on it on FA a few years ago.

This is Farzam's Thread, but you can get close to the 200whp mark for less by going N/A. And unless you plan on tracking the car sometime in the Future, Good rotors, Pads, Stainless steel lines, And a tire upgrade should do you well.

This is basically MY thread...so why butt in man? At least PM me and ask.
200whp is easy and cheap as dirt. PM me with how to make 200whp for how much...
And along with making sure you have performance parts, always remember to make sure everything is ABLE to perform. Tire pressures, no leaks, check to see everything is ready. There are plenty of checklists on this site you can get to make sure you'll be gravy trainin' it up.

I believe there are more s-chassis being modified than z-shassis, which would lead me to believe that there would always be many more. Perhaps zilvia as a whole is not working to provide a good atmosphere for Z owners due to the 99% S-chassis topics?
This is a more opinionated question and since I am not a Z owner, I could not talk from true experience.

Check your wiring, check your shift forks, make sure your transmission is engaging/disengaging your clutch and such, and check the sensors.
I had someone bring in an FC and it had a bent shift fork and GOD KNOWS what happened to the rest of the tranny, but it wouldn't start cause the fork was ruined and someone ripped out sensors.

1. have you ever heard of velocity porting? www.mototuneusa.com (http://www.mototuneusa.com) i think there is more info there. im wondering how this would affect a turbo application. basically the run down is by making the intake ports smaller, you up the velocity of the incoming air and you get more air into the chamber in less time. i know there are gains to be had on n/a applications and i just cant see why it would be different for a forced app. what are your thoughts on this?
2. does coating headers work well for keeping exhaust heat in the pipes without causing the failures that header wrap does? ive searched on this and most people are more concerned with how well it keeps underhood temps down; i dont care about its ability to dissipate heat, i want to keep the expanding heat in the exhaust.
Thanks man. I wasnt even thinking along those lines. but im glad i asked your opinion bc i was leaning more towards the 1.5 way but now i have some more research to do before i buy with a whole other option. -Chez

Go underneath the car and take off the starter and its a straight shot, kinda. It will give you a better angle. You could have gotten it that way with a long extension, some needle nose and rubber hands.

Hey farzam just read your wole thread, good job on for that
and I got a question about intercooler piping, you said earlier in this thread that the length of the piping didn't affect but wouldn't shorter intercooler piping mean less lag.
I mean, doesn't the blow off valve release the pressure from the system when you release the throttle. So if thats right, then having shorter piping should mean less area to build the pressure in, so less time to build the pressure.
What do you think ???

Why are there no wastegated manifolds available for a 1JZ VVTi motor?
Is it true that for large power (400whp+) that one should covert to external of is internal still "ok" (referring to first question).
What is the best route to disable to ETCS? Power House Amuse controller or a different route?

Cause it'd be stupid on a 1jz...
external wastegates are awesome.
Internal is for sissyboys.

How can I cure my understeer problems that I encounter at any speed above ~50mph? (for drift)
Clutch-kicks, weight shifting, nothing seems to work except running extremely bald tires in the back.

Technique...new car...more powerrrrr...change suspension settings.
Do you just have coilovers as far as suspension mods?
Go get a tuner shop to give you an alignment, it's hard to come by a place that'll do it and do it correctly for that matter, but if I can find a place here in Raleigh, you can probably find it anywhere.

Well its not a new head. It has 120~k on it. I am thinking maybe the valves could use adjustment. Also, I dont seem to have all power until, lets say, 3,500rpm. It kinda bogs til then.

Usually if i'm replacing any sort of line or part I replace all of that set.

sounds dumb, but on a 96 ka what is the best way to get to the knock sensor to replace it. I try and work on it about once a week or so but my hand can't fit between the manifold, and those flexible extensions dont work to good.

Blindly, I bought a HKS wastegate actuator under the advice of this guy at a local perormance shop. He covinced me that this was the source of my problems. What was happening was.... I bought a boost controller (an old greddy profec) and hooked it up and saw no increase in boost. So we put a tee in the vac line (and took the controller out) from the actuator to the ic line and saw a slight increase. So i bought a performance HKS wastegate actuator.... to my suprise, this didn't fix anything!(even with the boost controller). WTF! I'm running in the 5.5-7psi range. So is it my turbo (http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=142506#)? If so, Can i use the HKS wastegate actuator with an S15 turbo?
Any advice will help...
ps. I am using all the stock sr ic stuff.
Thanks, Mark

Why is it that on my S13 coupe, my tail lights/dash lights/ding when door is open(letting you know the lights are on) only work when the headlights are on high beam? Also, headlights go up but not down. I can manually screw them down, and they come back up fine by using the headlight switch or the little button on the dash. Could the problems be related? I've checked all fuses/relays for headlight motors and changed out the button on the dash from one of my other cars. Thanks, Harley

Hey, awesome thread...
I've been looking at suspension parts all day, got a couple quick questions for ya...
For parts like Tension Rods/Rucas/etc, the prices fluctuate from brand to brand a lot. How is the quality of say splparts.com's tension rods ($189) vs JIC tension rods ($360). I ask because most people on here say you get what you pay for, yet I also see lots of people recomending splparts.com for suspension upgrades.
Also, Stance GR+ Pro (http://www.frsport.com/Stance_GR__Pro_Coilover_Damper_Kit_for_1989_1994_N issan_240SX_S13_p_2347.html) coil overs... Thumbs up or thumbs down?

It's personal preference really.
It's 50% quality 10% pricing 40% name.
IMO i'd get battle version tension rods, cause that's the only one i've had so far and they worked more than fine on my beater hatch...

why does my sr engine(pretty much stock) idle so rough and inconsistant. Ever since i got the swap in, its been running really rough. The whole shifter shakes. Sometimes it will idle at 900......at other times it will fluctuate from 900-600-700rpm. What do ya think is the cause?

here's is an issue I have been having...
First of all I have an SR with fmic, eletrical fans and stock thermostat. I use a Pivot Fan Control Gauge-X to act as a thermostat for the fans as well as a more accurate gauge. Also the water pump and thermostat were both replaced a little over a year ago. Here are the problems I have been having.
1.) the gauge becomes horribly inaccurate when the fans come on. I know this b/c it will read 220 degrees F and I shut off the car and it will read 180....it's never consistent. Although I'm not 100% that the car is not running hot.
2.) the car "pulses" when the fans come on (rpm's don't change, it's more of a vibration thing)
I have "bled" the coolant system to the best of my ability, so I don't think thats the issue. Have any ideas on how to fix this? I just want it to be reliable again for daily use if I need it.
As a quick fix , or maybe a permanent one, I was planning on putting a clutch fan and shroud (which I already have) in and possibly getting a nismo thermostat. Although that looks like it's gonna be tricky b/c of the condenser ( i think it's the condenser, I still have a/c).

The wiring harness should be modified to be used.

I dont' know what your'e doig with the car, the future mods you want, current mods, or any good info.
With that being said, ebay a clutch, cause you probably will upgrade the motor someday and why spend a lot on something you'll end up ditching in a month when an ebay unit isn't even that bad?
