what are you going to be doing with your car? autox, drift, drag, daily?

First off. The search button is your friend. There are many threads explaining this dilema. What are you gonna be doin. Drag/Drift/AutoX/Joyriding. If your on a budget a Viscous will work. If you've been stacking your chips and can afford a good LSD go for it. GL.

mainly drifting...welded is the only option unless you can afford a 2 way.

Get a real diff... The VLSD will save you money but its sooo not worth it. I made that mistake and blew the VLSD in a couple weeks. 2-way FTW!

vlsd..is crap...welded is better

vlsd is great if you don't drift,
either go cheapo way and weld
or do it the right way and get a clutch diff

waste of money. get a REAL diff. 2 way clutch ftw! fucka "sometimes i lock a little sometimes i dont"

exactly...but the only justification on why i have a vlsd is because i had a hicas s13 which i crashed, my current s13 has an open, and im too broke to get a 2-way...other than that VLSD sucks

If youre gonna go drifting, then I agree with everyone else and say you should get a real clutch-type LSD.

Most VLSDs have a lot of miles on them so, they won't lock as well and will probably break down on you after driving hard with them a few times- better to save up and get a real LSD.

Now the other questions are 2 or 1.5 way and what brand...... Choose wisely.

TRUE THAT.......i had the VLSD for a year now and it really like, "i lock when i feel like it!"

vlsd if its freee :D or really really cheap.

but anyway, the 5 bolt is suppose to be stronger than 6 bolt if you're just asking about the axles/halfshafts.

theres a lot of good info here if you're interested in a vlsd

No go on the vlsd, it totally a waste of time and money if your trying to drift with it. Weld it if your on a budget. Pretty much just like everyone said ^^^^. I'm just being a post whore today, don't mind me.

if your trying to drift, vlsd should be outta the question. I agree with the quote up top they sometimes lock and sometimes don't. Driving with a 2way or welded is very predictable.

F that i liked my vlsd... good enough for what i needed (some extra traction)

If you are DD w/ it or driving in any bad weather ull be sorry if u go past a vlsd

but yeah if ur tryin to drift then Fuk the vlsd

if you are DD or driving in any bad weather and anything more than a VLSD is more than you can handle, you need a different car

Sell the VLSD and get a Weld loc. Then save your money and get a clutch type.

420sx

ugh. just weld it urself. jesus, all it takes is some common sence and arc welder and good rods. its almost impossible to fuck it up

Common sence is'nt common anymore.

What VLSDs are you guys experienced with?
I'd thought we determined years ago that Nissan VLSDs DO NOT LOCK COMPLETELY, which is precisely WHY they suck at drift... it's friction, not locking.

side note: funny question coming from a guy with the nick "DoriKnights"... oh well at least it's not "RedSuns" or "AkinaSpeedStars"

cause they lock sometimes and its weak.
compared to a clutch type it is like almost getting some ass but ending up not.

I remember an old thread on the Miata forum that described a vlsd as a "glorified open differential"

my new car has a VLSD, took it to the auto X, and it behaved exactly like an open. one wheeler peeler all over the track

wootwoot

so your old car either had a clutch type or a helical. Get one of those or just WELD IT

Go welded. But I did get my J30 for 115 shipped from a salvage yard. It has been good to me but I am probably going to weld.

http://www.miata.net/garage/vlsd.html

There's a little tech article from the Miata.net archives. Yes I know Miata =/= 240 but the comparisons on there should be similar.

From that article
VLSD 15-20% Lockup (when brand new and still functioning mind you)
Torsion (HLSD...a la s15) 40-45% lockup
Clutch, likely 50+% lockup
Weld is obviously 100% lockup

People who say Welded diffs are no good dont know what they are saying. If you are on a budget, a welded is for you. VLSD will work the same way your open does (in essence). And it will cost more than a welded.

If you say you are too cheap to buy tires, maybe you shouldnt be tuning cars. Heres what you should do:

Get a welded (hint*blu808*SDP)
Get your car aligned to maximize tire life with regards to purpose of car
Have fun!
