...and I'm scared as fook to reach in there to get anything in fear of getting bitten.

I just opened to door as I was about to go in...then BAM...I see it crawling on its web and I can't help but notice that red marker. I'm going to have to toss some strong fogger (industrial strength haha) in there before I can get my sideskirts and start painting them.

Anyone else scared of certain spiders?

While I don't like them, per se, I'm not afraid of spiders. I had to do the 'kill a spider for the wife' bit tonight.

I am an exterminator. I wouldn't really worry about it too much. Black Widows are pretty common here in VA. It won't bite you unless you disturb it. So just go in there with a news paper and squish it. Look for eggs too. They look like little brown balls in/near the webs. Just sweep them down and wipe them off away from your house and you should be fine. If you do get bit by it though don't panic. The venom from one Black Widow will make you feel like you have the flu for a while, and then it will go away. Now if you get bitten by a Brown Recluse go to the doctor ASAP. But I have seen plenty more Black Widows than Brown Recluses. Good Luck.

I used to have a thing about spiders. They would always bother me a little.

Then I spent some time in the jungle...

After you see insects the size of your hand (and bigger); little spiders don't seem so bad. :ugh:

Ahh speak of the brown recluse. I want to let everybody in the northeast know that when I spent a couple summers in Texas. I brought home a few to PA. I saw one crawlin around in my stereo at home. That was cool. I dont know if the ones I brought(accidentally) could have survived, but I have seen several up here since then.(bout ten years ago) Little frikkers frick me the frick out!

And whats up with JUMPING SPIDERS!?!?

Whose idea was that. WTF!?!

The previous house I lived in was infested with spiders, I had to kill at least two daily, just in my room. One day my mom found a huge tarantula-sized spider in the bathroom, and everyone was too afraid to kill it, so my dad ended up catching it in a jar. Then my brother fed other spiders to it.

I learned something new... I was suprised by this, considering how they look, but it's actually not a spider apparently (and rumors of it's size are greatly exaggerated)

I left my wheels in a friends yard for a few months uncovered, and I went to pick them up. They were on the grass beneath a tree and when I turned them over.. they were full of webs and each had a black widow...

I think 1 of the black widows had a fat ass belly and the others had small bellies. Probably about to lay eggs.

I ended up poking them to death with a precision. :D

I had one behind a pile of 2x4's in my garage. I dropped a wrench back there reached in and put my hand in the web. That shit is like steel threads. They make the strongest webs Ive ever felt. Scared the shit out of me. I put a light back there and sure enough a big ass black widow. Use some brake cleaner, they dont like it.

That looks a lot like the Brazilian wandering spider... but they're from different families (Wikipedia FTW!). The brazilian wandering is the deadliest spider in the world.

It likes to hide in shoes. :ugh:

That is fucking disturbing. I would've ran out of my house screaming.....or burned down my house in a desperate and frantic attempt to kill the fucker.

I HATE spiders. They freak me out. I'm not an extreme arachniphobic, but i've definitely got a strong case of it. I especially hate walking into old webs. When i accidently walk into one, a ridiculous spaz out session commences and i yell curse words.

People think its funny, but i'm not laughing. :hahano:

I found a black widow while cleaning out my garage... I dropped bricks on it, but it would just flatten, and keep squiggling around.... So I got some peanut butter on a plastic fork... stuck it on its back.. and let it walk around while working on my car. In a few hours it moved about 2 feet, so I decided to finally torch it.

I used to work in a produce department, and it was always a little bit of a scare every time I reached into a case of bananas. Luckily I never saw anything too crazy, just a few smaller spiders and moths that I quickly disposed of.

It's awesome, venomous spiders are so rare up here, it's more of the thought of a spider than it is worrying about getting hurt. I think I've *maybe* seen one black widow my entire life up here. We do get GIANT house spiders tho, but if they don't bother me I usually let em go because they help our mosquito problem. The worst thing I had to deal with recently was a huge house centipede. It's like a spider with a ton of legs that fall off if they get threatened. Picked up some clothes and it was clinging on to my jeans and wouldn't let go! Thing was strong!

Camel spiders that i saw in Iraq were rarely big enough to fill up the palm of your hand. when i was in Okinawa, these were always called banana spiders, i saw some that their bodies were bigger than my hand (fingertip to base of palm), and each leg was about as big around as one of my fingers.

^Kinda looks like a "Saint Andrew's Cross" Spider. We call them Banana Spiders or Garden Spiders here too. Always freak me out, just because of the size. They make a cool zig-zag in the middle of the web's though. I give them credit for their creativity, then I show them what insecticide tastes like.

Fuck, i've had the 'shivers' for the past 5 minutes thanks to this damn thread.

Although not a spider, i once had a nasty thing crawl on me.

Was a hot summer night. Was doing push ups and crunches w/out a shirt on. Got up, and a couple minutes later i feel an itch on my back... WAIT, the itch is moving! Itch moves to my side... I twist to see a flying cocroach walking on my bare skin..... UGH!

I know I've told this story on here before, but one time we were doing a training mission out in the desert and right as the sun was setting I saw a tarantuala crawl across my boot.

I used to be a lot more adverse to spiders a few years ago. But now my fear has pretty much subsided. Go figure.

Still, if I see a black widow, or any other poisonous (as decided by me) spider, I quickly switch back to assasin mode and teach 'em why mankind rules over the earth.

My brother and me used to go hunting for black widows in the summer time. Once the target was identified we quickly took it out with a beebee gun. Great target practice!

Growing up in Guatemala, I've had my share of close encounters of the 8-legged kind.
When moving piles of firewood or construction materials you would regularly find similar ones to the one That_Guy posted, not quite as big with red eyes and about the size of silver dollar. We would learn to shake the piles before picking them up to scare the critters out of their hiding places. Spiders, gnarly praying mantises and stickbugs were common. Not for the faint of heart... and all for a measly quarter, the equivalent to a week's allowance then.
Spiders are scary but not as crazy as some of the caterpillars, fire ants and hornets I've come across.
