Ok, this is weird. While towing my s13, i noticed that i could see my flywheel, where the tranny bellhousing ataches to the engine....?!?!?!?
is this supposed to be exposed? i feel like any road debris could get up there and mess some stuff up.

Please only respond if you know. No speculation. I know common sense tells me there should be a cover there.
Im going to look at my FSM and take a picture. ill post it up here later today.

thank you

have a picture of what you mean?? the only way u should be able to see your flywheel is if the trans is unbolted sitting in front of you :P and through the starter mount..

Definitely should not be exposed on any engine because, as you mentioned, road debris could get in there and ruin your day. That's why the hole that your clutch fork sticks out from has a dust boot on it.

DJ_Sunrise was right, only if you tranny is unbolted or if the starter is off.

There's a backing plate that sits against the block, behind the flywheel. You don't have it apparently.

It must be an A/T if it is then yes there is a plate that bolts on to there.

even if its a manual tranny theres still a plate that goes behind the flywheel. i know because i forgot to put mine back on after i had the flywheel resurfaced and put in a new clutch. i didnt realize until i put the tranny back on. luckily the motor and tranny were out of the car so it wasnt too much trouble to take everything back off and put the plate in place.

EDIT: heres a picture for the OP

i got the picture from an ebay auction and its kinda shitty. the plate is a few mm's thick. you get the idea.

I have a car that has the bottom of the flywheel exposed.

I could care less.

No problems and the car has been running strong for ages.

nice its for an s14 Ka24de. The block is a built AMS performance block. its in an s13 with an s13 tranny.

All KAs use the same backing plate, 91-98.

Its a backing plate that covers the lower half of the engine block to trans bell. There is supposed to be a gold color steel plate that covers it. I guess if you dont have it, it functions as a clutch cooler also lol.

Thanks. You went above telling me to use the search button and posted some good info.

Russ you happen to have one of these plates sitting around.... I'd rather you ship it to me Vs. driving down to GA.
can you help?

As soon as I have time to pull a transmission I'll have one. Maybe late next week?
