afaik, there really isn't a lot of tuning know-how for coilovers. Sure, if you're going to track the car it would be beneficial to corner weight, but if you're only planning to take it to a few drag/autoXs then the adjustability is what you're really after.
Granted, these days you can just buy adjustable shocks with adjustable "coilover" springs for maybe 3/4 or 2/3 the price of a good set of coilovers.
depending on what car you have, KYB AGX's are probably one of the more sought-after shocks.

On my '89 S13 SE, at the moment, I have a more or less 'custom' set of DMS coilovers with Tein front and rear pillow ball mounts.. They're 30-click bump and rebound adjustable with 450lbs front springs and 350lbs rear springs; just around 8k/6.2k. Ride height is lowered from stock by 1".. possibly 1.5" in the future. Nothing lower. Pilot motorsports front and rear strut tower bars, Whiteline front and rear sway bars, RSPS adjustable tension control rods, polyurethane bushings front and rear. Aluminum rear sub-frame bushings are just as far away as a phone call.. Wheels will most likely be Ray's P1s (Kosei K1s) in 16x7.5 and 16x8.5, however, I'm considering instead 16x8.5 and 16x9.5 and mild fender flares.

I'm having second thoughts about putting the front and rear 300ZX brakes I have in the garage on (to keep unsprung weight lower), however, I might just as well do it to keep wheel choices open..

If I can find a KA24DE for a reasonable price, I'll dress it up with a turbo..

My Skyline brakes (same as the aluminum 300ZX brakes) were actually about the same if not lighter than stock. The rotors themselves are heavier, but the difference in braking is well worth it.

Since you are limited on money you might want to check out PDM (http://www.pdm-racing.com) they are having a summer special of AGX KYB Adjustable schocks and the Eibach prokits for around 528 or something like that. This setup is what I was about to purchase but instead decided to work out my dented up body
