View Full Version : White/Blue Smoke Other Possibilities

Search is down at the moment or not working for me atleast, but i looked in other forums but couldn't find specific answers.

While driving, at idle/stop lights etc. white smoke comes out of my exhaust followed by massive blue smoke, some from the engine sometimes. It smells like oil but the white smoke I see scares me. Few questions

Blown HG = constant 24/7 white smoke?

Not using an oil catch can can cause this?

It doesn't seem like I'm loosing coolant, in the reservoir tank about half an inch difference every other day depending on the weather, the coolant in the reservoir looks dark at the bottom of the tank, but im assuming its just because i have blue coolant. I start the car w/o the radiator cap and it doesn't bubble but it rises to the top in like 10secs so i have to close it. Normal? Oil on the dipstick looks fine. Engine Temperture never goes beyond 50% mark. But my exhaust smells like coolant (sweet smell) at idle, when theres no smoke. Normal?

What other possibilities besides a blown hg, and wornout turbo that can cause this?

I'm not a mechanic whatsoever and getting a compression test/leak down test this saturday. Just seeing what the forum guys think. Btw $85 for a compression/leak down test expensive?

searched for everything possible

-but i still don't know how this "milky substance" in oil looks/feels
-there is no foamy substance when i open my oil cap
-the coolant in my overflow tank is dark because theres small dark dirt in there
-when my car is cold, the coolant overflows in like 10-20 secs after i start my engine (radiator cap off)
-but the exhaust still smells sweet

ahh im going nuts! still gotta wait to get a compression test =(

Sounds like a blown head gasket but you'll have to wait for the test to confirm.

When the turbine oil seal died on my t25, it would smoke like crazy at idle and occiasionaly a little while cruising. However under boost it would not smoke at all. You could see baked oil all over the inside of the o2 housing and coked oil around the turbine wheel. Hopefully thats all it is in your case.

but what i don't get is the white smoke initiating then the massive blue smoke coming out. and the sweet smell coming from the exhaust when theres no smoke, that only leads to a blown hg =(

yea its your HG man, have you overheated it recently? another way to check, is open the rad cap and rev the motor a bit, if bubbles come up from the rad cap that usually indicates emissions in your coolent (leak in the headgasket). But if you know what your doing, Headgaskets aren't that hard to change. Blue smoke is usually an indication of a blow turbo, rings, or valve seals or even a pcv valve. Do a leakdown / compression test to figure out that problem or like bring bronze rim said you can take your hotpipe off and check for traces of oil which would mean its your turbo seals. BTW is this a ka-t? sr? rb?

sr20det, well the coolant slowly rises up from the radiator rises when i turn on my car, then i would have to put the rad cover back on or coolant will go all over my radiator.

yea theres a lil oil moisture in my hot pipe / bov pipe, but its that sweet smell from the exhaust thats really bothering me

no my car hasn't overheated at all or even pass the half way point on the engine temp gauge

i almost guarantee it's your headgasket. Blown turbo wouldn't be making white smoke.

well the thing is like white smoke comes out of the exhaust for like 2 secs at idle, then massive amounts of blue smoke.

i've read the white smoke (coolant) doesnt hang on in their hair but deminishes a little after, unlike blue smoke which hangs on the air

i have like white smoke (maybe oil mixture) and blue smoke that hangs on the air over like all the cars around me

if my car was burning coolant why are my coolant levels still the same?

85 bucks expensive for compression + leak down test?

take it to a local shop that knows and works with sr20's. 85 bucks seems a little steep , you can buy a cheap compression tester for 30-50$ and SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH how to do the leakdown test.

white smoke does not only indicate coolant but can also be unburnt fuel coming out. Just a thought.
