View Full Version : SR20DET alternators suck and the people who sell broken ones do too

I've gone through 2 alternators in less than a year! What's the deal with these alternators...what's the deal with people selling shitty alternators.
I'm done buying used alternators and having them work for 1000 miles. Sorry for the rant, but now I'm forced to buy one from Japan which looks like it's going to cost about 200 dollars. On top of the 100 dollars I've spent on batteries which the alternators have blown up.
I've tried using the KA24DE alternator on my S15 and the pulley doesn't line up exactly with the belt so I'm not going that route.
Sorry for the rant but if you read this please don't contribute your used shitty alternator to the guy who needs one...think twice...you wouldn't want a used shitty alternator.

you sure its the alternators? i think u have to swap out pullies to use the ka alternators. get the alternators checked out at a strauss or pep boys

I did the pulley swap and they still didn't line up. At any rate, voltage once installed would be around 14.1V at the battery and at the B terminal. Once they crapped out lights would go extremely bright in car and outside of car, then charge light would come on, then all light would go dim. Measured voltage after this happened would be 12V at battery and less than 12V at alternator.
I just think that the voltage regulators suck and don't seem to last long, unless something is wrong with the way it's wired but I doubt that seeing it works for a little then craps out.

Also, if there was like a short or something causing me to burn my voltage regulators out in the alternators wouldn't it burn out the fuse for the alternator before it did damage to the voltage regulators?

Just get your SR alternator rebuilt. It will be cheaper than buying a new one from japan.

I fried my alternator 2 years ago. Had it rebuilt locally and have never had any problems with since. Maybe you should look into that route. They could also tell you what failed so that maybe you can prevent it next time.

Yes, get it rebuilt
I had to get my CA18 alternator rebuilt, fried 2 ECU's before I just had it done. The thing would test fine, but it would randomly spike just enough to fry the ECU, nothing else.
Once I rebuilt it, it was fine. I think they were able to up the amperage output of it when the put it back together as a bonus too, lol. Just do that, then you'll have all new shit and it'll last way longer than another used one.

yea rebuild definetly.. a ton of supra guys around here go that route, despite being the meticulous mofo's they are. $30 ish for a rebuild kit for supra, cant imagine 240 would be toooo much more haha. do it yourself its easy enough :)

we get ours rebuild locally by shop that does mostly domestic alternators and they actually perform better then stock after.
also you can buy electronic cleaner and spead on it, let it dry.
dirt will affect the performance of an alternator also.
good luck,
sam
