510 EASTBAY need help with valves(I think)

So my girls 89 has a slight burning oil smell and small puffs of smoke out the exhaust when she shifts. Its been suggested that its a valve seal, anyone know of someone that can help me out? I had taken it by a local repair shop to get his opinion and he started talking about full rebuilds and new engines and crap, I could almost see the dollar signs in his eyes.:boink: Im in ALAMEDA and could really use some help. Oh, it still just has the SOHC in it and Im sorry but she dosent need a SR20. :) Thanks alot for any help!

you got a blown HG, check you motor oil and coolant and tell me what color it is. PM me im local

I had checked that and the oil and water seemed fine. No loss of coolant, the oil is slowly burning away and the smoke is black/brown. I dont see any leak of anything around the head or any part of the engine. The car dose heat up pretty fast when you start it, but it dosnt go past half way on the guage. I dont know if that helps.
