Search didnt provide the answers I want.

I was leaning towards coilovers but someone is offering to sell me some Tein Sport springs/shocks for cheap and since im going to school I should try and save some $$. they have 4000km on them and lower the car 1.5-2 inches.

Im using my car for street i would sacrafice ride quality for good handling.

thanks

just get it , might decrease the shocks lifespan but control is definately better .

most people i know that become serious about handling upgrade to coilovers. what you want to get is definately better than stock but ultimately you are take a detour and spending more money in the long run. that is, if you ever will care to track your car

i'm on that set-up right now, tein s.tech springs with kyb's, the ride's not that bad, and handling is way better than stock, but once the shocks blow like any other setup the ride sucks, i think i only got like a year of service, now i'm just gettin coilovers, instead of new shocks and springs. i'm also in school so i know where you're at, yeah if you get coilovers the ride quality is not as great at springs and shocks on street, but if you ever plan on tracking, or even some spirited driving you're better off with coilovers(plus you can go lower..wink wink)...sorry its so long..just my 2 pennies

maybe he is refering to the tein basics or whatever, or does tein produce struts as well, i think not iirc however.

I made the mistake of getting springs and shocks when I first got my car. It was cool but if I had spent a lil more I could of got coilovers, which I have now. So what im saying is dont waste your money and time on springs just buy coilovers its a better investment.

everyone told me this as well but my dumba$$ tried to cut corners... Your shocks WILL blow.. its just a matter of time... I would go 100% coilovers, trust me save for a couple months the extra say 400$ and it will be worth it. Or you could go my route and pay 300for shocks 100for springs, and not be able to lower it any more and hate it!! lol I cut my springs, the same ones your getting and still not how I would like it.. Im saving for coils now :/ Dont do what I did!!

Well it wasn't my intention to start another debate vs coilovers but I appreciate your opinions. I wasn't aware shocks blow so quickly, don't coilovers have the same lifespan typically? How long are the lives of both with typical street driving, I am not going to track my car anytime in the near future. I got pics now:

so apparently shocks/struts are both tein as well as springs. Only reason im considering this is because it will cost me probably 1/3rd as much as a coilover setup and probably suit my needs. its either this or probably megan coilovers

i didnt even know tein made shocks....lol, but honestly, i did what rowdogg did and cut the springs, but if you want comfort more than anything i'd just get the shocks and struts, just know you're going to have to buy new shocks most likely within a year.

A year? why? because of being lowered? how long do coilovers last and why would they last longer?

Shocks life span is shortened by a multitude of things. Primarily shorter springs, due to cutting (REALLY STUPID) or drop springs, will wear them out the fastest. but driving habits also wear shocks down almost as fast.

If you hit every speed bump at 30 MPH and corner every turn at 45-50 you will wear them out pretty quick. Shorter springs cause the rod travel to be lessen while not actually shortening the rod. This causes the strut rod to bottom out on the seals, thus blowing the seals and leaking out all the fluid (blown struts/shocks)

Coilovers don't have this problem because they design them with shorter rods for less travel to allow for the lowering factor. Obviously lowering coilovers too much will cause premature wear due to the stress of less bound/rebound travel of the strut rod. Most coilovers will let you go as low as 3" while this is not recommended, it also not necessary unless you are trying to drive a locomotive on the track. Too much lowering will actually work against you if the spring rate isn't high enough. And the low end coilovers don't have rates higher than 6 usually. I'm planning on getting Tein basics with tein mounts and setting them to 2" drop. Should be a good setting for daily and some track time.

Hope this helps.

I'd hope they last longer than a year. I ran Eibach Pro-kits and KYB AGX for about 3 years with no problems, and when I took them off, they were still in great shape, none were blown. If you run lowering springs (or cut your springs) on stock shocks, then yes, you will have a problem. Normal shocks are not designed to work at the reduced height, and blow out quickly.

Yeah AGXs are better than stock due to the enhanced valving. Konis also from what I have found.

But Tokico HP, GR-2, monroe, etc. are all considered OEM replacements and should be treated as such.

haha, yeah i was the guy taking corners at 40 and yeah i did cut them...the drop tein gives wasnt low enough..but, i looked for the reciept when i got them and to my surprise i've actually had them for about 20 months before they blew, even driving hard and having the springs cut...sorry thats closer to 2 years than 1. the shocks i used were gr-2's, werent that bad...although oem replacements, still did a pretty good job....so about 2 years of servitude. once again sorry i provided bad info the first time, luckily there are alot of people on here that really know about all this stuff ie..dream240 and nbrindley

Well to be honest, 20 months isn't really a long lifespan. I would rate lifespan by how many miles you have on them not months.

And differenciate between track miles and daily driver miles.

My springs are chopped by the previous owner which is causing lots of suspension issues. The ride actually isnt that bad.. Right now my current issues are

1) Wheel hop - I don't need burn out anyways
2) Steering shimmy - Depending on the road conditions my steering wheel shakes @ 80->100km/h approx.
3) Squeeking noises from rear end going over bumps - Comes and goes
4) Bump steer? - Car wanders slightly on uneven roads
5) Clunk when downshifting and accelerating (related to wheel hop issue probably)

My alignment is good, wheels are balanced and rotated, Tires are good. Going to get coilovers(or shocks/springs), subframe spacers and new bushings this month. hopefully that fixes everything

i have never tracked my car but i would say that i put around 15-20k street miles on them(i cant remember exactly how many miles my car had then) but i drive pretty hard sometimes...bc240 that basically what i'm doing...planning on gettin energy suspension bushing kit and some stances...if i get them before you do i'll let you know how it feels because you basically desribed how my car feels right now, with a few differences here and there.

Make sure that the springs are authentic....shoot' i bought mine online and they had a small sticker on the spring that said Tein when in actuality they should have been painted on the springs.

what does the sticker say on the bottom of the rear shock, maybe they are old ass tein basics?

Haven't seen them in person yet, I posted a WTB and he msg'd me with those pics. Im trying to decide if i have the $$ for coilovers.. im also unsure if I want to buy a used shock of any kind. could end up getting burned.

new tein springs = 200 bucks, kyb's = 400-500 bucks...600-700 bucks total....brand new no worries.
