View Full Version : Engine hesitation

I have a S14 with a KA. The only aftermarket parts on the engine is an intake that was already on when I bought the car. Anyway occasionally when I'm driving a little more aggressive than normal, the car hesitates a little at about 3k rpms. It just hesitates for a second and by 4k rpm's its back to normal. So the rpm's increase while its hesitating, its just like a temporary power loss. It doesn't do it all the time. Anybody had this happen or have any ideas? I guess it could be the MAF, I wouldn't think that it would have anything to do with the fuel system since it isn't a regular thing. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check the intake for any place air can leak after the MAF.

Check the maf to see if it is clean. Sometimes the oils from the filter gets on the maf and makes it read incorrectly.

Will a dirty maf throw a code in the ECU without turning the engine light on?

not unless your bulb's burnt out or not wired in, but not all the time will maf issues kick a code either.
try some fuel system cleaner in the gas tank and spray some carb cleaner on the maf elements

My S13 did the same thing and a mechanic I went to told me it was a loose MAF wire in the connector. Mine did it between 1st and 2nd gear and 2nd and 3rd gear directly after shifting though, so I'm not sure it's exactly the same thing.

I think im having the same issue... ill gun it and it goes rather well but suddenly its like someone hit the nawz button at a certain point in the higher rpm range. K&N oil sometimes gets on the MAF sensor

Yeah I'll check those out. A few days ago I ran seafoam, and when i did that I cleaned the air filter with the K&N system so those are all possibilities. Thanks guys.

Okay so on the way home today the check engine light came on when I was going about 60mph in 5th (around 3krpms). It didn't hesitate or anything was just driving normal. Got home and checked the ECU. Its throwing a 76- Fuel Injection System. Any ideas? I was planning on having my injectors cleaned and putting a new fuel filter on when I get my tax refund.
