Does anyone know what this is?

I have been trying to figure out what a couple of pieces on my new SR are. All of the service manuals I have show a ca18 and the sr20 manual I have is for a s14 vtc which doesn't have it. Can anyone help me out?

I'm thinking that is has something to with timing retard under boost but that's only a guess.

This box has vacuum lines that come from the crankcase and from the intake manifold. On any other motor I would expect to see a PCV valve, but I don't know what this thing is for. This box is also in the way of a tubular mani that I have been trying to install.

I'm not exactly sure which piece you're asking about...

The thing you're holding in the first pic is the AIV (remove it, you don't need it) and the black canister is the stock oil catch can I believe.
