Look for this before you install your transmission!

Before you install your transmission onto your motor read this!!!

I got this info from; http://forums.nicoclub.com/zeropost?cmd=tshow&id=232882

And I also contributed to the fixing of this problem as my problem was a bit different!

Ok here we go;

Asking before i get angry:Transmission 11:36 AM 3/5/2007

Hey guys, as some of you may know back in august the third/fourth gear shift fork snapped and broke off rendering the transmission useless, not to mention the wierd hybrid no one knew what i had.
Anyways, i picked up an RB20DET transmission from JGY customs for 395 and it shipped and got here the same week, which im pleased with, but "I THINK" i may have a problem on my hands. The packaging left a bit to be desired but i think its decent, when i unpacked it, i noticed the shifter was out of the transmission which was good, but when i put dropped the shifter in with no c clamps, i can ONLY shift into first, and second gear, I tried rotating the input shaft to see if the gears were just snagged, but still no go. Am i just paranoid and i need to install it and give it a try....Or should i assume something like the SHIFTER FORK IN THIS ONE is broken.

Yes, its all properly put together.
I added some oil and held it a slight angle to keep it from leaking out the back, and i put a burnt up clutch on the input shaft to get it to spin at a decent speed.
I
Here is an illustration of where i can and can't move the shift lever and its properly seated, lubed and in the right spot.

Heeeeeeeeeeeellllllllll yeah!
I fixed it and it goes into all gears thanks to a friend off a local forum, he gave me a tip and i tried it out.
Basically i took the front cover off on the inside of the bellhousing and the three rods that poke out when you shift was stuck. The first and second gear rod was poking out half an inch or so... maybe not even that much. I lightly tapped it about 2-3 mm's and then it recedec into place with a "not braking" click sound.
Put it into first, then to second and it popped out again and tapped it back, then put it in neutral, then went 1st 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, back to neutral, and then to reverse, several times perfectly, i am so pumped, ill have my **** back in and running this weekend.
Thank you guys for your efforts and tips.

I had the exact same problem! I have a KA24DE - and I had the motor out to replace and fix a bunch of stuff - So I installed the tranny on the motor out of the car.
Man I wish I would have checked this before I put it all back in the car!
Well needless to say I was finishing up my 5 speed swap yesterday - all I liked was installing the shifter to spin the driveshaft over to tighten the nuts - and what do you know it wont go into gear! - can even get it over to 3-4-5-R - I could get it into 1-2 but it still wasnt in gear (DS wont spin)
So I talked to a few people and luckily someone had read this thread - and told me to search for it here on NICO!!
I had just poured in brand new Red Line MT-90 too - so I had to go out and buy a brand new drain pan to save as much as I could - hopfully I dont have to buy another quart! That stuff is not cheap!
And I had to drain the Clutch master cylinder - remove the slave cylinder - starter - intake - tranny X member - loosen MM nuts - and then pull the tranny from under the car on jack stands - alone! Man I was pissed!
I recommend never pulling the tranny from under the car its one of the biggest PITA I have ever dealt with! Not to mention its Dangerous!
Wooohhoooo tranny is fixed now!
I feel like a dumb *** though - because I had already pulled the rear of the tranny off to install a new striking arm - the previous owner took it for his RB B&M shifter.
And I didnt even think to look at the shifting rods! I have never heard of anything like this before! But it looks like it happens!
As it turns out somehow - the tranny was in 3rd and 5th gears at the same time - but like you guys stated just remove the front cover and push in the rods from there - well thats cool if its in 2-4-R - But if its in 1-3-5 - You will have to pull the rear of the tranny off - Because you cant pull the rods from the front cover. o their is another 411 on this problem fix
I think this should be made a sticky so all 5 speed tranny owners are able to read this!
After it happens to you - you know what to look for - but if you have never heard about it before and this happens - you are clueless - and pissed because you think someone sold you a crap tranny!

he says later in the thread that if u can turn the input shaft by hand while in gear your tranny is broken, but its not true, mine turns fairly easily ( every gear it gets progressivly harder though) just trying to stop misinformation

So the point of this thread is?

Yes, Nissan put for align holes in the transmission. His first trans probably was not broken either.

TLDR
Please format this.

I dont know if your talking about what happened to me or the other guy on NICO with the RB?

If its me;

I guess you did not read fully???

The point of this thread is to check to make sure your tranny is shifting properly before you install it - thats as simple as it can be put.

I went into more details with what my problems were - to help someone who ran into the same problem.

And no nothing was broken on my tranny.

I was misunderstood or wrote it wrong or something? Even if you have the car in gear and spin the back tires by hand - it will not turn the driveshaft

And yes you can turn the input shaft while the tranny is in gear - it will prolly take a lil more force though.

Basically I installed my tranny without knowing this even ever happening - so when I went to put the car in gear I was like :eek2:

If you dont understand or care about this thread the just dont read it - its for people having these tranny problems. I am just trying to help out and give a heads up so you dont end up like me - having to pull the tranny back off amd opening it back up!
