ya i have after market rims the are 16x8.5 13 offset...they worked fine when i had the ka in two days ago.....so just splice in swap connectors and speed sensors right....i have a 93 ka

you shouldbnt have to splice in anything it should just be a direct drop in

so the sr and ka speed sensor plugs are the same????

Just to clarify, you are supposed to use the Speed Sensor from the KA, not the SR.
Next most likely is a bad connection, i guess if it was only reading every 4th pulse because of a bad connection it could read 1/4 the speed the vehicle was traveling at. I highly doubt this, i have never seen this in person.

:hsdance: :hsdance: fixed the problem...my speed sensor i guess is from a od2 sr ...late model type x... it had the connector on the sprrd sensor... not by the starter...so i matched the black ka wire to the white and black wire from the sr harness..and the green too the white and blue one......and tadaa!!! problem fixed thanks guys....

Thats weird, I used the sensor from my '98 Blacktop SR (S13 Type-X), in conunction with the SR lower harness and it all worked perfectly fine. My speedo was only 1mph fast at the 55mph mark...:loco:

To clarify for those who can't be bothered to research, even though we've covered this to death and back a million times, there are only four different VSSs for the S13/S14 chassis.
S13 auto
S13 manual
S14 auto
S14 manual
JDM/US are the exact same. You match the sensor to the cluster, IE: if you're using an S13 cluster, use an S13 sensor, it doesn't matter if it's an S14 engine/transmission or vice versa.
Auto sensors will not fit in manual transmissions.
S13 VSSs are identified by an aluminum case and a long wire lead coming off with a 2pin connector, green and black wires.
S14 VSSs are black plastic and do not have a wire lead, the plug is molded into the case.

Russ,
I have seen the black plastic VSS stuck into S13 blacktop trans. Is this a mix and match part issue, or something else going on?
I say to use the one out of the car, because if the speedo/vss was working before, it will work again with the new setup, so swap it over once, and be sure.

More than likely they put it into an S14 and swapped sensors with knowing. I've never seen an S13 chassis with the newer VSS, but it *could* be possible there was a late changeover somewhere in Japan.

i have the same problem but mine does not work at all....it was an automatic and now i converted it to manuel....i have tried 3 speed sensors, had the wirring harness redone, changed the speedo and nothing. Any information would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Russ,
Can you dump the VSS signal directly to the back of the speedo?
I will check the fsm in a little bit to verify.

'Dump'?
It goes straight from the VSS to the cluster, yellow/red and yellow/black on S13s, red and red/yellow for S14s. It's then summed to the yellow/green to the ECU, ASCD, and ATC.

So cmedrift240,
You could directly connect one of the VSS wires to the back of your guage cluster.
Thanks russ.

Question: If I'm driving a 98 240sx with a S13 SR20, would I need to run a S14 speed sensor. I'm currenty running the aluminum housing speed sensor (S13 speed sensor) and my speedo is reading in km/h. It'll say I'm going like 85mph when I'm really doing around 25mph.
