Here is a link to my web page, I put up four pics of the rust on my hatch after I removed my spoiler. Is this a bit excessive for repair? Would it be wiser to blow 400 bucks on a used hatch and paint job? Also, go easy on that link, I only have a gig of bandwith, and I frequently run out. If you guys know of another free page hosting place that wont charge and has over 1 gig of bandwidth, lemme know.. thanks

EGAD! That is some nasty shit man. I'm afraid to take mine off now.
As for fixing it: It can be done with a wire-feed welder, some sheet metal and a little time. Of course you would still have to have it repainted afterwards.
Maybe you should just put the spoiler back on and call it good.

"SWEET JESUS!!! Eww that is that, is that his weiner? Shouldn't someone put that back on?"
sorry, the rust looks BAD. I suggest a new hatch and dont get one with the spoiler. I think S13grl bought one from someone on here. PM here and find out more about it, I think she got a really good deal.

damn man, it looks pretty bad for a patch & paint. I'd go with a new hatch. However, If your deadset on fixing it, its possible with a side-grinder, welder and a can of bondo. If you have those at your disposal, fix it up, rattle can it and throw the spoiler back on, noone will be the wiser. If you get a new hatch, you'll have to re-paint the whole thing so...whichever's cheaper for you.

Hey, i just replaced the hatch on my 240, my rust was really bad also. I was thinkin about fixing it, but after goin to a few shops and gettin advice from them, i decided to look for another one. I opened the phone book, and called every yard there, i found many hatches for my 240. Luckily i found one, in my color, without a spoiler for $100. every other yard was charging 100 also for the hatch. So u may want to look around more, 400 seems high and u may find one in ur color. mine looks like it came with the car. Problems with repairing rust....theres no guarantee that is wont come back at the welds and it can become costly to have it done right. So id find urself a used hatch, and save urself some trouble down the road...thats just my opinion, id just start there.

you call those rust holes? now THESE are rust holes! </paul hogan> nah, i don't have a picture... oh well. the holes on MY deck were big enough to fit a tennisball through, on both sides... a can of bondo got rid of em, and an Erebuni GTR wing will ensure i don't have to worry about a poor paintjob or lumps.

heres what i am in the process of doing for my rusted hatch...I bought a bomex spoiler and am now taking it to a body shop to get the rust (a spot on my rear drive quarter panel, and a spot the size of a nickel on my a piller as well as under the spoiler) fixed, a whole repaint on the hatch and the spoiler painted and installed...i got a quote for about $600 but i dont know if he knows that the spoiler is bolt on to the stock holes and shit (i had my dad take it to the place cause i work when they are open) so maybe it will be less.

i had the same prob.....the best is to cut it all out (rust) and and weld in a new piece, then fill it in so its smooth....then repaint it that nice shinny black u got!!!
if u use bondo, most the time if not all, the rust will come back,....and we all hate rust!
by the way where did u pick up the clear bumper lenses, and how much!

There's four bolts accessible from the underside.. take off the cardboard/felt interior panel by pushing in the center pins of all the fasteners, then you can get at the bolts.
Then you yank on it.
