View Full Version : S15 Helical LSD in S14 SE...HELP PLEASE!

I apologize if there's an existing thread covering this, and I'm completely oblivious to it, but I was hoping to take care of this a week from this saturday, so I should probably start ordering parts A.S.A.F.P.
I'm wondering what information I can get from someone who ACTUALLY knows, either from reading a legitimate AND proven article on this being done, or from physically doing this swap themselves, what all is needed to accomplish this as far as parts/oddball tools are concerned, and if this is a good alternative to a noisy clutch type.
I'm no expert (obviously) but I BELIEVE my car (I JUST started screwing around with it) has a VSLD, and it's just not cutting it. I've heard the clutch type LSDs are no holds barred the best at their job, but a more civil compromise for street/road race is the helical, so that's what I'm interested in. I don't want to be a dick, but I'm not interested in thread loiterers that THINK they know everything, based off of what they may have heard. I'm hoping to hear from someone that KNOWS how to do this, what I need, and possibly where to get it...and trust me, your help is more appreciated than you know. I can tear apart anything else in my garage, and put it back together blindfolded, but I'll be the first to admit, other than putting some coilovers on another S14 for a buddy a few years ago, I've never even touched one. And being this doesn't exactly seem to be a catalog purchase, I am in serious need of help.
Thankyou to any help anyone can give me, it's EXTREMELY appreciated!

all the help you need can be found by searching, so I'm sure we'd EXTREMELY appreciate if you'd do that first from now one.
Screw around less. Learn how to use an internet forum more.

I AM searching; I'm asking for help, apparently you're not able to do that for me. Thanks for your condescending remarks though, they help out absolutely nobody. This is my FIRST time using an internet forum, look at how many posts I've NOT put up. I was always under the impression you learned how to do something by asking, hopefully no one else is as big of a prick as you.

don't worry about optionzero, most of his posts are just telling people to search.
i have an HLSD so i can probably help you. first off, it's a factory part so the construction is pretty tight. i pulled out my open diff, swapped the ring gear, and dropped in the HLSD and that was it. i might have needed spacers but everything went in fine with the original spacers. just put everything back together and you're good. i would check with the local nissan dealer and see if they can check the gears after you install the diff in the pumpkin and if they have the appropriate spacers.
parts you need
HLSD
output shafts
gear oil (1.5q, 75w90 i think)
RTV for the rear seal
on a side note, it's been common internet knowledge that the HLSD requires HLSD output shafts because the spline is different. last week or so someone tried the open diff shafts in an HLSD and they fit. there really should be some confirmation so if you have the capability to try that, we would all appreciate it. i didn't try mine both ways so i can't verify. let us know what you come up with and if you have any more questions.

^^ listen to that guy. When I installed my hlsd, all I did was swap ring gears, drop it in with the new hlsd output shafts and put it all back together. I didnt use any shims, and my oem OPEN differential halfshafts, would NOT fit ;), other than that, straight forward stuff. Do it and then go have fun, gurantee you won't regret it.

omg I typed in the search window "s15 helical" and found like 3 threads detailing the install... I call shinanigans on you "searching" and just you being lazy.
You may want to set backlash and shim it or you can figure out why peoples diff's "Humm at 35mph+" after a diff install that didn't require shimming or setting backlash. S15 Ring gear bolts are differnt diameter but people install the smaller ones..

search button is a very usefull tool BUT/HOWEVER most post are filled with junk and most of the time you dont find what you are looking for, the search button is good for common problems, major problems and issues rate thier own post. besides aint it better to just help someone than to flame them cus they did not search? most of the time if i see a post like this and know that the answer for it is in another post i just link that post for them, easy and useful :)

To "OptionZero", "TheWolf", & "Turtl631"...you guys have really impressed me with your lack of a social life. Do you really have nothing better to do, than be an online know-it-all? You actually took the time to get online, log in, search forums that are put there to help people, probably cracked your knuckles, and just started typing...probably thinking how sweet you were the whole time, how much you know about nissans, and probably how much of a badass you were in high school. Awesome. If you have something negative to say, seriously, just keep it to yourself. I apologized in advance and made it clear that I didn't know how to use a forum. I pleaded ignorance, and yet you found it necessary to talk shit. Congratulations. Proud day for you and your family. Really...you're the best.
To everyone else: Thankyou! I appreciate your help, and I'm trying to learn how to navigate a forum a little better, bit by bit. NIzmo400r, do you have the hum above 35mph like he mentioned?
Anyone else with HELPFUL information, keep it coming. Thanks guys!

You ask for help, people tell you where to find answers, and then you come back as a dickhead faggot?
Shit, ever been to a library? its the same mother fuckin concept, go find the info you're lookingn for instead of riding other people there for not waiting on your every need and desire.
since you concede you dont know how to use an internet forum, it'd be wise to listen to the people who tell you how to do so.
goddamn people with their attitude
pleading ignorance doesn't get you off the hook, it does not make you special, it does not entitle you to spout off to others, it just means you should be trying twice as hard to find knowledge instead of mouthing off
talk shit when you've earned the right

OptionZero...you're right: I DID ask for help. Some people helped, a few LIKE YOU, offered smartass/insulting remarks. How is that helping on your part? Are you seriously still replying to this thread?
My attitude? Are you kidding? I've shown appreciation for EVERYONE on here with something helpful/positive to say, you're the only one with their head up their ass.
Pleading ignorance invites people that WANT to help, and apparently lifeless nerds like yourself, that have nothing better to do than get online and talk shit. If you had maybe offered help from the get-go, or even just kept your negative smart-ass remarks to yourself, we wouldn't be having this "conversation."
I am trying twice as hard as other people, I admitted that I know jackshit, and I came here trying to leave with some knowledge. It's people like you that prevent that from happening. What did you accomplish by leaving your first thread? I mean jesus christ...all you did was try and provoke some shit talking. Mission accomplished, you've shown a forum novice that there are pieces of shit like you floating around, ready to discourage people that are trying to meet great people, and learn something about a car they know nothing about.
Thankyou. Not just for putting words in my mouth, but for proving to everyone how awesome you are, and how much you know about everything. I strive one day to "earn the right" to talk shit to you. I'll make sure and put that in my schedule for tomorrow. Got it. All set, I promise I won't forget!
(A legitimate thanks again to everyone else who IS helpful)

If you had read my post instead of playing "pity me" you'd have gone to the search function and found multiple threads on your question.
Instead, you choose to keep responding here and whining about how no one's giving you a reacharound.
You cannot plead ignorance then bitch about the help that you get when you haven't bothered to take advantage of it.
