hello. what's up? I'm new to these forums, but not to cars. I've just bought my first 240, (after owning and working on several hybrid hondas and toyotas) and I'm not sure what to do about the engine. Most would say swap in the SR20 and forget about it. I might do that, but I'm considering some other options, too. One is turboing the KA. I realize what needs to be done to make this successful, but is it practical? Is it worth it? Does anyone drive or know of a boosted KA-powered 240sx? I read the post by "CA18GUY" about T.Y. Yap's (pg. 7), and it sounds good, but what are the times? Is it really that quick? I would really like to build an 11 second street car. Is that practical with the KA24DE? Any opinions? thanks for reading this.

There is a guy here at work with turbo'd KA, that wiped out our owners Ferrari 550 Marenello. I have the dyno sheet on it here somewhere if I can find it. My computer filing system leaves alot to be desired. By my best recolection the dyno showed 402 hp and 397 tourque.

I also believe that he mentioned the with NOS he would be shooting for low 11's

A guy that works in the same complex as me has a 90 s13 with a turbo KA24DE. He put lower compression pistons in it himself and built his own turbo kit. He's runnin about 17-18 pounds of boost which provides around 370 hp at the wheels. He also has a 50 shot nos kit but has only used it once since the wheels just spin due to the fact that he doesn't have a LSD. He has been daily driven this setup for about 5 years.

Duy, in TX. Had a 96 with fully built KA Turbo running high 10's. He traded it and is now working on an s13 coupe.
I have a soon to be complete KA+T with no aspirations of drag racing.

Punk genius- where do you work that you have a ferrarie 550 and a sick turboed KA in the same parking lot? Best we have is a turbo supra and a couple Z3's and one boxter in a firm of 300+ people. Oh, and my 93 240 hatch.

I work for a large computer supplier in Arizona. The Ferrari belongs to the guy that founded our corporation, and it is by no means in the parking lot on a daily basis. The 240 belongs to one of our sales reps.

luke20- yes it is possible, if you got the money, money buys speed.hehe

Duy was DEFINITELY not running on stock internals. I saw his car at last year's Dallas meet. It now belongs to some guy who doesn't seem to know too much about it. Or at least didn't then. Him and Duy made a dead-even trade: Duy's Turbo KA for this guy's Civic Si. Wrong, I tell you, wrong.
Anyway, the tranny was stock, that's all.

No - fully built + boost + a big NOS shot. I think the final was 10.38.
Back to the other part of the question that no one has touched... is it practical. I ask you, do you know of any sub 13 second car that is practical? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

hahaha, bunch of confusing replies...
The Built Turbo KA that takes out 550 belongs to my friend. He no longer works at Insight. He takes out BPU Supras as well as 600hp Supras. His car has been dynoed at 402rwhp on the street program. He hadn't had the chance to dyon the car on the race program... Should be more than 402rwhp. Runs a JWT ECU, 72lb/hr injectors, etc.
Duy in Texas also has a built KA. He's running standalone ECU. His car ran a 10.83 @13xmph. His car is estimated to push 600hp with aid of nitrous.
The SOHC Turbo KA is probably Simon Kim. Long lost turbo guy that use to be on the 240SX cca amarok mailing list. He's the only 240SX that I've seen that actually was a feature in a Japanese magazine. He is in Cali.
I'm the guy with the stock internals. Best power to the ground is 318.3rwhp and 329ft-lb torque at 1.0bar of boost. with a lousy 2.3 60', I managed a best of 13.5 second @ 105.5mph.

Ok, again, back to the second part of my question, "Is it practical?" And yes, sub 13 second cars can be practical. There are many 300zx TT's, SR20-powered 240's, sentras, etc. that are very practical. Even Talons, Eclipses, and 3000GT's, but those are DSM, so we'll stay out of there...

402whp? What turbo? What I/C? What boost? That sounds like a nice setup, and for street use too. Is there a website for it?
I think a KA24DET is more practical than an SR20DET, as long as the engine still has some life. If you're gonna turbo a 100,000 mile KA, I'd suggest to swap in a low mileage SR instead, that's more practical.
But 11sec? I don't know. That guy with 10.8sec was running a T70 turbo, 30psi, and 100 shot NOS. I don't think this is practical for everyday street use.

Wouldn't a electronic boost controller make it more streetable. Just keep in turned down for daily use and just crank it up for the track or on the dyno. Also, could he have run a bigger shot of nos?
