I recently bought an s14 with a salvaged title and it needs the dmv VIN inspection along with the brake and tail light inspection. Unfortunately my starter went out and I cant drive it down there right now. I am going to put in an sr, so my question is (if you have any idea) if i go to the dmv for the inspection, do you think the motor will give me any issues? im in california btw.

haha is this a joke? SR is illegal in all 50 states. its worst in some states like ca.
pay to play... might be nice to build an sr race car but if your idea of having a reliable dd 240sx with sr in CA then you are in for a surprise.. everytime you're harassed and sent to ref is goign to cost you money, time, and sweat. swap motors in and out, pay to have someone else do it, set aside 1-2 days everytime to swap, whatever you fancy. plus having your car have random things break is always no fun.. which is what 15yr old 240sx are known to do.. shit breaks all the time even if you least suspect it and thought you replaced everything with aftermarket already, but if you dont mind and can afford it then by all means do as you wish.

onto your question about dmv inspection. i had to get a car titled for ca b/c the title was from new jersey. iirc they pop the hood to check vins and other things. the dmv ppl might not know about engines or check it but if you have all these shiny parts and filters and stuff they might be suspicious. you will most likely pass vin inspection and get a title to your salvage car if you can somehow get the car to dmv. however, you might get away with sr with the dmv people who know nothing but no way you get it passed asshole cops who will pull you over and send you to ref for no reason or ca bareua of automotive repair (BAR) people who know their shit better than us.

lol, Im pretty sure they are gonna inspect alot of stuff maybe even under the hood. Dont risk it and just wait.

Your gonna have to smog it anyways. Why not fix the starter, get it inspected, smog it, then maybe go with the SR.

i never asked if it was legal, i was not sent to the bar. i just wanted to know if anyone had experience with the vin inspection, such as bringing a car with an sr from out of state or having their car totalled by the dmv. the car has already been smogged, so i figured the dmv wouldnt even look at the motor.

Why not fix the starter,

I really just didnt want to go through the trouble of finding a used starter, installing, just to yank the whole motor out.

ummm, thats a little more info than i needed, but thanks. lets see, ive owned 10 240s, three with srs. so im well aware of the issues involved, but you did say you brought your car from out of state, did it have an sr in it?

for any of you who actually live in CA. DMV VIN INSPECTION is only an inspection of your vin number. the dmv workers do not know what motor belongs in what car. YES you can get thru VIN INSPECTION with an SR20DET as i have done it along with my old roommate. YES you can get thru the break n light inspection with a SR20DET, NO you wont pass smog with it which will also be required after your vin inspection.

I've driven daily with my sr20det for over 2 years. zero problems reliablity wise. i feel the sr20 is more reliable then my stock KA was. i've driven all over the south area of california from sd to La n back many many times. no problems here and no problems as far as "random things breaking"... its not some miracle special motor that requires more attention jus cuz its from japan. its still an engine so reliability is no more of an issue then ur original motor.

ON TOP OF THINGS: FRPILOT, what the heck are you talking about illegal in 50states? many states do NOT require emissions which would not make it illegal at all. i know of many people in cali who have registered there cars in other states to get around emissions. you needa do some research before passing on retarted info =x

Sorry but it is an illegal motor, just because some states aren't strict with their emissions doesn't mean that the motor is legal.

the DMV does not care whats done with the car as longs as it "was" legal at one point in time. They just look at the Emminsion stickers that are under your hood that show the Smog/charcol chansiter and the vaccum line stuff. For the brake and light check make sure you have some meat left on your brake pads and ALL your lights work on the car IE side markers, and your reverse lights.

been there and done that..
1.) smog your car
1a.) swap the sr (or do this last)
2.) get your light and brake inspection
3.) go to your local police station OR the dmv and have them verify the vin # (they dont give a shit what is in there AS LONG as the vin matches and also make sure the motor looks as stock as possible, i.e. no aftermarket parts, even shiny things.)
4.) go to dmv, bring all your paper work and pay the registration fee.
5.) go drive your registered car

and looks like you are from turlock, go get your brake and light inspection done at monkeys rv (thats if there is non at your area) on yosemite and airport way (by 76)..($80)

and get your vin checked at the manteca police station ($10 fee)

Yup Yup! All the people at the DMV or the Police station look for are shiny things or parts that look new. Thats when they start asking "Whats this??? dose this belong on this car???" Unless you go to the police station an get a cop that really knows their shit.
