View Full Version : Any DJs on here?
Was wondering if anyone on here DJs. What gear do you have? What do you spin? I've been getting into it lately after my friend bought some gear and let me play with it. I might buy some equipment to play with. Only have Traktor and MixVibes on the PC to play with for now.
So yeah, if you spin, post up. :)

I don't DJ anymore, but for those that do, this book I am studying in on Ableton Live! 6 is good to DJ in, on the live performance aspect, when paired with an MP3-filled computer and/or CDJ interface.

learn on some entry level direct drive tables. that way, if you decide to go to 1200s or something else nice, you'll appreciate the quality and your mixes will be tighter. my 1200s have made me lazy haha

dude i have 1210s and a 07pro. sold it like a crackhead since my gf didnt like me being one... =-/ ill never forget those days...
I was looking into some CDJs. I figure I want to get the mixing part of it down pact first before I get into scratching (and mixing) with tables, but man they're expensive too. At least what I was looking at. The Pioneer CDJ-200, which is miles from the CDJ-800MK3 and CDJ-1000MK3. I've read to stay away from the cheapy brands like Gemini and such.

Well I used to have some equipment but got rid of it all except the records, which I still have a bunch of that I cant seem to find a buyer for. I had Numark tt-2000 or something like that to start with but it decided to crap out on me after like half a month of use so I returned it for store credit and got a new electric bass instead.
Like someone else said start off with some cheaper direct drive tables then upgrade later.

Techs. 1200M3D's to be precise. some shitty Numark mixer that does the job. Sony MDR-V700 headphones. Shure Whitelabels. A whole bunch of Trance and Progressive rekkids!
My advice: If you want to start spinning vinyl, find someone who has 1200's and practice on those. If you decide this really is for you, buy a pair of 1200's, off the bat. You spend more, but they last forever, hold their resale value better than all other tables (so if you end up deciding this stuff isn't for you, you won't be out so much), and they perform better.
A lot of people will tell you to start off with a cheaper table. I don't believe in that. Most people that start out on lower end tables end up getting frustrated because their mixes aren't as tight as they'd like and give up. Plus, if you get any good you'll want 1200's anyway.
Word of caution: Vinyl = Black Crack. Don't say I didn't warn you.
However, if you're smart, and are above the arrogance of vinyl enthusiasts (I'm not :D ) go with CDJ's or MP3s.
Not as cool looking when you perform (unless you work with something like Final Scratch) but cheaper, lighter (carrying around a crate of vinyl is a pain in the ass), and you won't wear out your tracks.
The above pertains to beatmatching. I don't scratch, so your mileage may vary if that's what you want to do.
Good Luck!

I've been DJ'ing since I was 15, I'm 22 now. I own my own business called ILM Entertainment. I DJ at a club here in town called The Reel Cafe' every Friday and Saturday night. 10-2. I am forced to spin mostly hip-hop due to the club scene here, but I do fit in some breakbeats every now and then! I'm def NOT a fan of vinyl. You can have that, carrying in cases and cases and cases apon cases of records...... and I have 600 cd's in one wallet. With the 3500's you have the vinyl effect while using CD's. It has a spinning platter the size of a 45 record that you can cut on. It's the best of both worlds.

CDJ1000MKII's
alot of dj's arent upgrading to MK3's b/c it doesn't feel any better than MK2's. The only upside is it plays MP3's but here is the worst predicament: you just put all of your music on MP3 format and put them on some cd's. You go to a venue and the venue doesn't have MK3's! now your fuct.
CD's are too cheap to try to squeeze 50+ mp3's on anyway.
Around here, MK2's are the standard.

If you deejay using MP3's shoot yourself now.
At least spring for .wav and let everyone enjoy the better sound quality.

I only have a few CD's that are MP3. They are only intro mix CD's and my promo mix cd's. The rest is wav.

I think its okay to spin with MP3's or CD's as long as you still can use vinyl and tables.
I think even some of the pioneers like Premier do it, but have a reasoning for doing so.

well that's the best thing about the 3500's. They spin so you can use them like vinyl.
And I looked at your "special page". I've never seen so many hot wheels in one place in my life....
