... makes me kinda sad that people are too pussified to allow them to break the sound barrier at a height where it is really visible and enjoyable to see at airshows.

Went to the site in the bottom of those pics, typed "sound barrier" in the search on the left and found this guy:

That shit is the COOLEST Feeling EVER! Tomcats were the only ones that can break it at a level flight pattern. F/A-18' have to climb, dive and hit it as they are either going down or right as they level off.

They had an f-18 break it in Pensacola a few years back...not the 5 miles off the coast like they are supposed to and it actually broke a few windows in the homes in the area. Every once in a while they will let them 'bump' the barrier like in the 2nd pic. for airshows, but that is about it.

The second best sound/feeling/sight is them dropping bombs high order off the sides of the carrier.

I've seen the blue angels do this at Barnes AFB and they did a complete flyby with the sonic boom...
Then again we're used to planes with 3 bases near us...

speaking of breaking the sound barrier Phil you should come to the air show here in the fall. Oh and Lisa My F-15Es drop bombs and are still only designated a fighter.

Prandtl-Glauert singularities FTW!

Never seen one in person though.

We used to see B1's go on NOE flights when we were out in the desert doing FTXs. That and F-16 and F-22 dogfights.

Never saw/heard one going supersonic though. :-/

So, B1 swept wings. or whatever the term is called. I don't remember.
now THAT is cool.

Don't get me wrong, FA18 is cool as heck, but a B1 is super boss.

One time when the space shuttle was about to land there was a low rumble and my windows shook, I had no idea what it was but later on the news I saw it was the shuttle. Obviously Im new to Central Florida but that was damn cool.

so when you're going faster than mach 1 do the vapor cones keep forming randomly? Or does that only happen right as you hit it?

The cloud only forms under certain conditions (relatively high humidity) and lasts as long as there is enough of a pressure drop.

At least that's what wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prandtl-Glauert_singularity) tells me. :D

NO doubt B1's are badassery! They are SO massive and yet sleek.

Fromxtor~

I don't know much about AF jets and their designations. I do know that they do both though. Still they are bad ass too. Damn it. AF has too much money to play with.

Lisa you and Kevin are welcome to come to our airshow (if your going to be stateside then)along w/ Barry,Phil and any other NC resident. Not enough money sadly, our base had a 1 mil funding cut this past year and we still fly just about as many sorties as we previously did and are working with Jets that are 17+ years old. Our newest jet is a '90 and we pull two AEF cycles to the desert every other year.

Man to see things like this in pictures really does not do justice for the real life experience. I have my private pilot's license (which I rarely use because flying is so damn expensive), and I'm taking aerospace engineering (which taught me that I actually know nothing about the theory of flight, totally shaking my whole belief system). But every time I see fighters do a low pass at a show or on base, it really is inspiring and reminds me where my place on this world is.

that stuff is badass, a lot of those pics are old as hell tho. My dad (AF Lt. Colonel/Pilot) had this one (http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/5027/image0055hh3.jpg) as his background like 4 years ago, and im sure the rest are similar. It doesnt really happen at shows b/c windows are broken, and the boom is HUGE! Basic airshows are loud enough, but try explaining to a whole neighborhood why they need new windows throughout their entire house. lol

i love that plane. we occasionally refer to it as a "big fighter," it's so damn sexy, fast, and can blow up lots of shit.

on a side note, the vapor cloud doesn't necessarily mean it's breaking the sound barrier, that can happen any time the conditions are right as stated earlier. i saw it happen at an air show when the plane was only going 4-500mph. it's just a cloud that forms in the low pressure zone created by the aircraft. pressure drops, air cools, water vapor condenses, then evaporates once the pressure normalizes. the same thing happens on top of a wing when a plane is climbing hard. but that's not as cool. sorry to burst anyone's bubble. more cool pictures!

I'm in C. Florida as well, you'll see a lot more than that. Assuming it's a clear night, you can pretty much see almost every shuttle go up from North Florida down to South Florida. Not sure about the panhandle though.

I lived about 10 miles from a base in Jacksonville, we used to sit on my roof to watch the Blue Angels. Better than dealing with the crowds!

i love those tomcats. F14D super tomcats ftw!

but in the army the closest thing we have to airplanes are helicopters.

we do have planes, but...

i have no idea what they are for.

..not like my job has anything to do with things that fly, or drive.

i just make sure my grunts don't die.

haha.
