Gutted interior on the street is for retards. I tried it once upon a time, it fucking sucks.

Keep your interior, the weight savings won't be really noticeable, especially if you don't remove the important shit (HVAC shit behind the dash, AC stuff, skeleton in the doors, sound deadening, etc.) Removing your carpet isn't going to save you shit...in fact, it'll just suck worse because your car will look like a rolling box of dogshit and no girls will want to get inside of it.

yea its the c pillar bar... but... i was shipped the wrong one.. they sent it to me for a damn civic hb... so i made dew whut i could..lol.. but it looks a lil bit different now... ill post pics up later tonight hopefully... and as far as having the door panels and all that shit... thats just for a comfort factor... im not gonna waste my time taking those things off just for an extra 2.2 pounds.. and plus i put stuff like my cds and such in them

+1 rep for that!!

I agree, completely a waste. All it does is cause more noise. And the weight savings aren't really necessary.... "zomg, I'll get to the store fastAr because my s13 weighs 10lbs less!"

Yeah, ok fine.

But it's not like the local store parking lot has a minimum weight class that you need to get down to.

I just think that it's useless for the majority of people to strip out their street/daily driven cars.

:werd: :stupid:

save it for a race car... i learned the hard way that you can either have a race car or a street car. it can be somewhat of a hybrid of the two but it won't be a full street or full race car. so what's the point of saving a few lbs taking your interior out? plus, a/c is awesome for a street car. some can live without it, but i need it.

who wants to drive around in a car with a full roll cage, bucket seats, and strapping yourself in harnesses everytime you get in/out of the car just to school, work, etc? you'll just look like an idiot. plus attention to get your car stolen and harassed by cops.

haha... thats funny... i dont know... but i can guarantee if u were in cali... even the old people would prolly try and race you... or start bump drafting you.. people ive noticed are dumb out here

just cuz i drive a 240... doesnt mean i always race it... just weekends.. like i get a couple of hondas and another 240 pull up to me yesterday and start reving their lil engines at me and they take off at a light burn out and shit.. and then a cop pulls me over and said i was racing because the other cars took off like that.. soo.. hopefully people arent as dumb out in florida....lol

Reason #1 to guttin my coupe was the smell.

This is my car when I did it with chisels and hammer (dryice is for sissy, hehe actually I'll probably do it with dry ice next time).

Why I did it, because my car smelled like cat from the previous owner. Plus I always thought the whole gutted interior looked great. It's pretty loud though. I can hear everything, which is good also.

I should've welded the holes shut since dust and sand always gets inside now and looks like poop.

I used two coats of primer, two coats of gloss grey, and two coats of clear. All with spray cans and lots of brain cell loss.

Now I gotta strip it all out and weld a cage in and paint it all over again. Awesome.

Yep guess its the airbag control unit. My bad.

From my perspective theres barely any room for people in my car with me being in the drivers seat pushed all the way back. Only a midget or someone really short can ride in the back seats comfortably. So removing the stuff in the rear doesnt hurt anything.

However, I think it looks pretty stupid. I know some people will take performance to extremes in their cars with stripping and stitch welding their dd. I personally just dont like the look but removing extra weight from your car is the cheapest performance mod you can do.

McRussellPants

I gutted my car because

-it smelled like cat piss and a inner city drainage ditch.
-it looked like shit
-it sounded like shit, Genuine mono sound, while cool in 1992, is not so fresh now.
-I was bored.
-S13 interior is made of tweed and burlap and is not baller.
-I don't have AC, so chicks don't like my car anyway
-added up it was probably substantial weight savings

people should note, that rattlecanned interiors look cool for a day.

then they get dusty, dirty, scratched and otherwise wack.

My old s13 used to be gutted, i was embarrased as hell everytime some new bitch would ride in it, it was annoying sounding everytime it would rain, and there was fucking rattles everywhere. My current one has a perfect interior that isnt getting gutted until i get my cage in. Just make sure you keep all your shit in case you change your mind at all.

well the only thing i have left is the passenger seat and seat belts... as for the noise.. mine is really quiet... like i said before.. the previous/original owner took really good care of it.. had all the maintenance records in the glove box and even had the battery warranty card from when he bought the battery... so mine is nice.. and usually the chicks that go with me.. already know whut im into... so they are already excited and wet before they even see the car..lol

ok.. couple of questions...

1.what does stitch welding the interior do?
2. what is a good paint to use that wont scratch away real fast
3.woul it hurt anything to remove the supports on the rear strut towers if you do not have a roll cage?

so far in my gutting ventures i have lost well over 250 lbs, and still have stuff to remove if i choose to.
i chose to gut mine and make it a 2 seater... becuase 240's should not have been a 4 seater car to begin with.
and now i dont get asked to give people rides as often ;)
thats a bonus

and my experiance with girls and my car, they dont mind it being stripped...
i have never had a girl tell me my car is ugly or that it loks bad becuase theres no carpet or rear anything..

just my opinion though.

As far as strut tower supports, I believe they are just supports for the back seats.

stripped interior is great.. for a track car. i had mine gutted for a long while, but now i'm taking a different approach: i'm buying 100 square feet of sound deadener and covering every panel. even with full interior, the 240 sounds like a tin can.

All mines gutted right now to give it a full cleanup everywhere. Nasty shit on the bottom of my rear seats. Anybody know what that little box in the middle of the rear seats is?

I hate all the noises my car makes without the seats so many squeaks that make me want to investigate everything in the car.

I take it you have an S14. That's the airbag computer.

Safety 101: Anything connected to the yellow wrapped wiring harness is for your passive restraint system (airbags) DO NOT CUT OR DISCONNECT!!

As far as gutting your car? Sorry I can offer no inspiration for doing this, aside from the fact that all your wiring is easier to get to when you're troubleshooting or modifying.

Other than that, it completely blows. You hear every rock hit the under-carraige, every suspension squeak, and just about every other noise that a car can make. I'm going the other way around and replacing the interior carpet with a new piece, new upholstery for the back seats, got rid of dash/door carpet trim pieces, and my old S14 front seats for now. Plus i'm doing a complete interior dynamat install.

Honestly for the sprung weight savings you get, I'm making up for that in drivetrain mods to free up horsepower, so more weight but more revs too. :)

Really the weight savings won't be as noticeable as having another passenger in your car or anything. Just keep the insides....unless you have vaginal secretions lingering in your trunk..... :barf:

EDIT: ooops, I only read this first page beofre I posted. :Owned:

Oh yeah I almost forgot. When I gutted my car for some interior work I found: some panties, a couple batteries, an old traffic ticket, money, and food chunks of a mysterious sort all crammed down the holes in my trunk where the jack and side markers are. Still can't get all that food shit out. Prolly why my car still smells like a bum sleeps in it. :(

I hate when people say stupid shit like this. Its a car, keep what you need - take our what you dont need. Who needs rear seats, what do you have kids or friends that are midgets? Fuck that shit, tell them to take their own car. Thats what FWD 4-door sedans are for.

Anything BEHIND the driver/passenger seats is fucking useless anyway, especially if you have a rollbar and some harnesses. No one can sit back there, or shall I say safely. I'de never want to be in an accident and be in the BACK of a 240SX.

If your car isnt making much power, forget it.. dont bother stripping your car. The lightness wont make a shit of a difference. If you still have original suspension, shit tires, old bushings, etc.. keep your interior, you've got bigger problems to think about it. The fact that you're driving a 15+ year old rolling junk pile should be reason enough NOT to waste time stripping your crapheap.

BUT, if you happen to have a nicely built and maintained car, good seats, harnesses.. and trashed those dinky automatic seatbelts, then hey.. go for it. Stripping the interior is great and saves a good amount of useless weight that you'll have to roll around with.

JEEEEEEEEZ.. think about it, we should make a poll.. how many people on Zilvia still have automatic seatbelts in their S13??? AGH!

Sorry to get off topic, but lets just clear something up.

Adding some sound deadening material doesn't necessarily weigh that much.

the Dynamat Extreme pads weigh in at 0.45lbs/sq.ft. And one box of bulk contains 36 sq.ft of material.

http://www.dynamat.com/technical_specs_dynamat_xtreme.html

So.... 0.45 x 36 = 16.2 pounds.

And according to the dynamat website, one box is MORE than enough for a complete car interior. Hell even using TWO boxes would only be 32.4 lbs.

Alot of added weight? Hell I take shits that weigh more than that.

SL style FTW!

I would only run interior to portions of the car that will have people in it (the front) the rear gets stripped/cleaned. rino'd because its where I put all my tools and wheels when I am on the way to the track.

Dont track? clean the car (every fucking corner) and get a hvac can or two, light them up and come back in an hour.

I like SL style... done right its an ever more enjoyable than what you would think. but once again... to each is there own.

Only reason I like having the rear seats out is that the drivers seat can go all the way back for boogie times in the car. Detachable steering wheel adds to the fun.

I'm cleaning my interior for now with it all out. If I can find a clean way to make it look clean like that blue s13 posted I might just leave it out.

what, do you think i've never been in a car with stiff suspension? i know exactly what's making noise. Yes the chassis will flex and things will not be as quiet as before. Yes road noise transfers more through the pillowball mounts that replaced the rubber shit.

Hey dousan, why do all the interior edges look buffed? Did you have rust problems? Or is that a welding thing? What color are you going to paint the shell?

Hey whatever happened to your Blacktop powered S14? I remember when I sold you that old OEM hood cause yours busted a latch and flew up on you.

damn, that was a long time ago. Do you still have the engine at least?

On a side note: i agree "member since age" has nothing to do with a member's knowledge. I've been here for a while and I'm always learning new stuff. I still have yet to pull a KA completely out. Yeah i know i'm lame.

I'm going for the best of both worlds... First I gutted the car, removed deading, useless wiring, rear speakers, panels, metal brackets, nuts bolts and so on.

then found some mint carpet... gutted the stinky ass foam off the bottom of the carpet, (holds moisture ) then put the carpet back in. carpet + door panels dont weight anything... but makes a world of a differnce for cabin noise.

speaking of rustoleum. very good stuff.

if you got access to a gun and a compressor i very much recommend industrial coatings like Duraplate from Sherwin williams and Epoxy. very nice THICK industrial paint. it wont scratch easy or peal or chip. they use it mostly to paint tanks but it will work real well for interior. very durable paint. CHEAP too.

Get some industrial spray in bedliner and paint your interior with that if you care

Real race cars aren't used as tire racks either. Which is why professional race cars can stay pretty clean.

If you really want a stripped interior and plan on using your car as a tool shed, put some towels down before you put your shit in. Or just deal with it.

Good paint won't just come up immediately though, but it will get scuffed to shit pretty fast.

I won't put my interior back in my S14, just because I don't have 90% of it and my passenger's side window needs to be put back on the track after every time you roll it down haha. But my car never sees the street either.

speaking of rustoleum. very good stuff.

if you got access to a gun and a compressor i very much recommend industrial coatings like Duraplate from Sherwin williams and Epoxy. very nice THICK industrial paint. it wont scratch easy or peal or chip. they use it mostly to paint tanks but it will work real well for interior. very durable paint. CHEAP too.

which is why i used ppg techstar. :)

hmm.... really any good epoxy would work great. as long as u are not using urethane paint cause its very thin. epoxy has that specific orange peel tetxture to it.

and if you you it just as a track car thats trailed to the events, then god bless, use anything you like.

i used rustoleum gloss white paint brushed on first
that was like the primer. shit sticks to ANYTHING
then rattle can w/ appliance gloss white
seems to be real hard when it fully dries
should be coool
easy to touch up too.

cool thanks for the info. you sand the first layer before putting the second one on right? thanks again!

it looks clean yes. but soon it will look like shit. obviously if u paint it so nicely in the first place, you obvously give a damn about how it looks. your car, your choice. but white is first color to look like shit when its messed up.

daily driver keep your interior.. really no use in taking it out.. race car is a different story.. like guys above said.. want a cage.. go around your full interior... but then again why have a cage in your street car.. you're better off driving a total bucket and having a dedicated track car.. that is registered if you really get an urge to whip it on the street :-)

I used PPG Techstar. Everyone I talked to said it was tougher than automotive paint. It's an Industrial single stage paint with an optional hardner, which I used.

Where can I find more information on this? I can't seem to find any information on a PPG "Techstar." Could you use it on a vehicle exterior? Or would that be a bad idea?

what is everyone using for prep before paint, im pulling my rollbar this week to add onto it a little and am planning on finishing her up nice. im planning on using the usual dry ice routine to get the deadening off, but is everyone grinding/sanding the remains and sealer? any tips would be appreciated so i dont end up wasting a ton of time.

ecuastyle84 it looks really nice, you did a great job of taking out the foam on the hatch. I'd gut mine, but my brother had his Integra stripped back in the day. The sound was the biggest turn-off for me, are 240's that bad?
